I love that when learning that Hoshino wanted a zombie featuring series that never came into fruition the fandom latched onto the idea and created elaborate AUs and theorised how badass their fave characters would be facing a zombie apocalypse, how they'd persist and survive and overcome fate only for Hoshino to make a gag arc where she says "these characters seŕving as the ultimate defence for humanity? In a zombie apocalpyse? Lol they'd be wiped out within an hour."

There's so many memes surrounding Junji Ito and his goofy bubbly personality in interviews & how this contrasts so heavily with the harrowing work he creates, there's a lot of theories abt this but I think they overcomplicate things & distract from the clear fact that junji ito has a fundamentally goofy & playful creative process. Like, focusing on the disgust & terror that his work elicits in you is missing half the story, behind all of his shorts is a pure impulse towards "okay, dude, wouldn't it be fucked up if-"
