I know that you think that Kevin from this is us has more chemistry with Madison than Sophie and searching through your blog I could only find an old post from early S5, so I basically just wanted to ask if you could delve into why you think that a little bit more. Thanks :)

There really isn't much more to say to be honest with you. Madison and Kevin aren’t supposed to have a cosmic, for-the-ages type of chemistry and they don’t have that but they look like they have fun

they look like they enjoy teasing each other and flirting

they look like they connect

For the story that Kophie is, for the kind of narrative and pull that the writers said that they have

So if we're going through this short list, that con of "Well, they've known each other forever" became "But that's kind of the point?" The difference between Kevin and Sophie getting together versus Beth and Randall or Jack and Rebecca is that it doesn't work so many times. They are not right for each other many times. That's what makes it different — they've tried and failed, and they're willing to try again. A lot of people have that person that [you] sort of miss each other emotionally and maturity-wise and life-points-wise, and you wonder what could have been. And in this case, despite it being another from-youth-to-adult romance, it was exciting for us to be like, "Well, what if they finally were at the right moment?" It was less of a linear relationship, because it kept falling apart. When we're watching Justin and Alex playing those characters, [it] just sort of felt undeniable and unfair to say we won't give them another chance.

What's more important - giving a story a satisfying ending or staying true to the original idea?

The satisfying ending. I'm not sure that I've ever written anything where the real ending didn't reveal itself while I was writing. Original ideas are what you need to start with but they may not carry you the whole way.

Kevison & Jabecca Parallels

Now I know the title says Jabecca and Kevison parallels but before I get into Kevison, I need to talk about Kophie for a minute and make my theory on why Sophie isn’t the one for Kevin.

So I’m pretty sure everyone remembers this fight, but does everyone remember Rebecca’s line “what do you love about me? The me that I am right now, not the me that you conjured up in your mind over the years...So the next time you tell me that you love me, make sure you’re not just doing it out of habit”

After this fight Jack reminded Rebecca of the moment he first saw her(1x18), a moment he would romanticize in his mind for years to come. Similar to how Kevin still remembers what Sophie looked liked the first day of 4th grade.

The difference is Jack was able to follow up with all the reasons he still loves who Rebecca is now, unlike Kevin. Kevin still puts Sophie on a pedestal not based on anything substantial they built now but on who they were in the past. This is made even more apparent in (2x13) when Sophie stated “just leave me with the past, just let me remember you at 10, or at 17, or at 20. Just let me remember you when it was good” The complete opposite of Kevin and Madison who fell in love with each other for the imperfect messes they are today. Which allows me to transition back to Kevison and Jabecca parallels starting with

The 1st time they saw each other

(AKA the Pearson men being smitten af)

It probably isn’t fair to put Kevison in the love at first sight category like Jack and Rebecca, but you have to admit from the very first moment Kevin saw Madison there was definitely something about her that attracted his attention. I mean he had to ask Randall to not let him sleep with her for god’s sake.

Being Strangers

(Aka these clueless idiots are about to fall so hard and don’t even know it)

One of the major themes in season 4 is how a stranger can come in and completely change your whole life. How was the foundation for this theme set? With a conversation between Jack and Rebecca(4x01). And how was the theme solidified by the end of the season? With Madison being a practical stranger to Kevin while also letting him know she’s gonna be the mother of his children and future great love story (4x18)

“I know I’m just a complete stranger to you”

“It’s so strange isn’t it. How just like that a complete stranger can become such a big part of your story”

A Not So Good Start

This one is pretty self explanatory. It’s no secret that Jack and Rebecca had an awful first date and Kevin wasn’t exactly on Madison’s good side after the whole waiting room incident. And yet...

Feeling Like Home

This one’s probably more debatable until we get verbal confirmation from Kevin, but imo the way Kevin looks at Madison 100% has the same energy of feeling home just like Jack described on his and Rebecca’s first date(3x01)

Fast Paced

Not to mention Rebecca and Jack going across country after 1 date and Jack telling Dave he’s gonna marry his daughter after knowing her for short amount a time totally has the same energy as Kevin proposing after just a couple months of quarantining with Madison.

Mom Being Better

(Aka the Pearson men having no backbone whatsoever when it comes to their little girls)

Jack always had a hard time disciplining Kate growing up and by going off of Randall’s advice(5x01) it’s pretty much guaranteed that Kevin will be no different. It’s a good thing they both have mom there to step in.

I believe it’s also fair to make the leap that it’s most likely Madison that Justin Hartley is referring to in this quote from his Entertainment Weekly interview:

“Hopefully he leans on his experience and his memories of his dad and what his mom can tell him about all that. And also on whoever the woman is that he's with. Hopefully he is smart enough to realize that there are things that that person has to offer that he can't possibly offer, that she could certainly do better.” (E.W.)

It’s the Small Moments

I’ve seen a lot of people complain about how Kevin deserves a great love story like his parents and how Madison doesn’t cut it. But why? Because they got together in an untraditional way? Because it wasn’t love at first sight? Because they didn’t need big moments or needed to take too much time to slip into the kind of intimacy that makes you want to spend the rest of your life with someone? Sometimes love is showing up on someone’s doorstep making a big speech, or flying halfway across the world together, or giving a person a private concert(not in Kevin’s case because that episode was just embarrassing), but other times it’s just sitting on the couch enjoying other’s company, being yourselves.

And whose to say one is less grand than the other. Plus Madison and Kevin’s story is just getting started. They still have the rest of their lives to make the big moments count as well. But I also want Kevin to experience what makes up the kind of love that endures a lifetime. It’s like what Janet said to Rebecca(being one of the only times I agree with that woman): “I know it’s not a flashy kind of love...but that isn’t all that love is. Not a love that endures anyway. And when you’re with someone day after day, night after night it becomes about the small ordinary moments...” (4x10)

An advice that Rebecca carried into her relationship with Jack(4x10)

Believing in a Future

So do I really need to go into detail on why Kevin’s hospital speech to Madison is pretty much for verbatim Jack’s hospital speech to Rebecca or can I just leave the links here for y’all to see for yourselves:

Kevin can envision a future with Madison and their family just like Jack with Rebecca. One that’s not a nightmare but instead is clear and beautiful.

On top of that there is still so much of Rebecca’s pregnancy with the Big 3 we have yet to see which means many more pregnancy parallels to come.

A New Outlook on Love + No Take Backs

“Rebecca, you have changed the way I think about love. I know things may not always be easy-”

“Ha. That should’ve been my flag”

“Well no take backs now, you’re stuck with me”

Now this is important because the way Rebecca changed how Jack thinks about love will be the similar to how Madison will change the way Kevin thinks about love. Like I mentioned earlier I believe he’ll finally learn the importance of the type of love that endures was that is more raw and intimate than the unrealistic picture perfect storybook ending he thought love should be. And if you don’t want to take my word for it, then consider hearing it from Justin and the writers themselves:

APTAKER: He definitely at this point in his life is really craving that happy ending, and as we saw earlier in the season, he’s really trying to force himself to find the one. He’s bringing out John Legend on the first date, which is kind of a crazy move. But Kevin’s just going to have to let life take him where it takes him as he figures out what romantic future looks like. 

Q. Madison is afraid she’ll deprive Kevin of his great love story, but we’ve seen people make great love stories out of all sorts of beginnings. Do you think Kevin could have a great love story with Madison?

HARTLEY: I do. I do. I think sometimes the nontraditional and the unexpected relationships develop out of something that you in a million years would never guess that Person A would be with Person B....That is kind of a miracle. Miracles will make you rethink things, I think.

HARTLEY: His approach to his love life and to relationships in general is so different than it was when we met him, or even a couple of years ago. He's slowed down a bit, he's safer, he’s more methodical, and he’s more practical about things. He takes a little more care, not only of himself, but of other people. I hope that he gets what he wants, and it seems like what he wants is a woman that loves him, with kids.

Also Jack and Rebecca’s whole “no take backs” thing, does that remind anybody of a certain car scene or is that just me

TL;DR Version I sent to the GC

Rewatching Jack and Rebecca scenes and all I can think about is all the parallels like how during Jack and Rebecca’s fight Rebecca said “make sure the next time you tell me you love me it’s not just out of habit” or just based on a past version of her he’s conjured up in his head which would explain why Kevin didn’t have as much chemistry with Sophie during their time together because everything between is out of habit and based in the past. Also Rebecca’s whole conversation with her mom about how love is about the little things and how Rebecca doesn’t care if it’s too soon that she already loves Jack. Also thinking about how after Jack and Rebecca’s first date Jack told Rebecca she feels like home and Rebecca can’t get over the way Jack looks at her which obviously made me think of Kevison cause the way Kevin looks at Madison like he’s finally home is UNMATCHED. Or how when they were rereading their wedding vows and Jack saying “no take backs” just like Kevin saying “I don’t think Imma take it back” and how Jack said Rebecca changed the way he thinks about love the same way Kevin will realize love is not about being a fairytale about being real. And also I think I need help
