The three-ring binder is the apex of book technology, by the way. All the advantages of a codex, plus you can add, remove, and reorder pages at will - pages which you can furthermore protect from damage in transparent sleeves, and store commentaries, notes, and other paratextual addenda behind them without obscuring the primary content. Truly the queen of codices. Reblog if you love the three-ring binder.

Kind of touching that Toa teams could be named after their deeds or battles or something but are instead generally named after the beings they're meant to protect. The Mata are soldiers for Mata Nui, Lhikan tells the Metru that the Matoran are the heart of their duty, and Hagah means that their job was to guard the Makuta. The Inika switch to Mahri as soon as they have a city of Matoran to look after. When Lesovikk has no one left to protect, his team is even named Cordak because of that loss. Guardians and protectors through and through (headcanons about Toa having instincts to protect that they didn't have as Matoran never get old)
#bionicle#and now i'm thinking about the toa mahri remaining close with the matoran of mahri nui#still their protectors even on land

Being the only bi cis guy amongst almost exclusively trans friends and peers is wild because in theory its like im living in a horny manga where all of a dudes friends turn into hot babes, but in reality they are hunting me like the last bison on the prairie. 5 years ago I mentioned bionicle and one of them asked when I was starting estrogen.

Leia and healing
Here's the thing. People get furious about the idea of Leia forgiving Anakin/Vader, because "he doesn't deserve it." But, one, no one can really earn forgiveness and Anakin died before he could do any acts of atonement. Two...what he does or does not deserve, especially in the Star Wars universe, is completely irrelevant. It simply does not and can not matter.
Leia needs to love her father for her own sake, for the sake of her own soul.
Why, you ask?
Because, her natural reaction to Vader IS fear, anger, and hatred. But, fear, anger, and hatred are not things anyone is entitled to. Fear, anger, and hatred lead to the dark side and the dark side destroys. It always and only ever destroys. Yoda said it led to suffering. Anakin learned the hard way that it led to his OWN suffering.
Love is the only weapon that can destroy fear, anger, and hatred.
Matt Stover wrote in the Revenge of the Sith novelization : "The dark is generous and it is patient and it always wins - but in the heart of its strength lies its weakness: one lone candle is enough to hold it back. Love is more than a candle. Love can ignite the stars."
And, honestly, that quote is probably the most beautiful thing I've ever read in a secular work.
#star wars#anakin skywalker#leia organa#it's a difficult subject#because i don't believe anyone is owed forgiveness#and i don't believe forgiveness is necessary for healing#i think it just comes back to that idea of letting go#leia never needs to love anakin#she never knew a version of him that she could love#and even if one is available to her now#in the form of his force ghost#i think trying to force herself down that path wouldn't do her any good#she doesn't have to love him#or forgive him for what he did#but it would do her good#and i like to think did#to let go of the resentment#it happened#he did it all#but hanging on to it and dwelling on it is pointless#healing is moving on and loving what's there now

Do you think Darth Vader is affected by the sunk cost fallacy? Do you think at some point he was literally knee deep in blood and for a moment he looked at himself and the horrific shit he was doing and went "well, I've fallen this far. Might as well get out a shovel and keep going"? How far do you have to go doing stuff like literal Genocide before you have a moment of clarity? And in that moment, if he ever experienced it, why did Vader decide to keep going? Or was the only moment of clarity he experienced on the Death Star watching his son become Kentucky Fried Chicken?
#star wars#darth vader#anakin skywalker#i'm pretty sure he's sunk cost fallacy the character#he knows what he's doing is wrong from the start#but he tells himself otherwise because it will be worth it#and then before he's taken a single step in that suit#it already isn't#the only reason he did any of it is dead#before he really even starts#he spends the next two decades as a monster#because he sees nothing to go back to#he destroyed it all himself#so might as well keep going#feel nothing but the anger at it all#pretend to be somebody else to ease the pain#that the person he was before deserved what he got#and that the screaming in the back of his head#to just stop#that even the smallest attempt at good would be better than this#isn't there

I feel like back in the 90s/2000s Oakley, Alienware, Bionicle, etc shared this absolutely PEAK tribal/industrial aesthetic that I have never seen drawn attention to or referenced in any way since.
Is there a name for this trend? It feels too edgy to be Y2K, and too whimsical to be Industrial Gothic. If this is some kind of nameless fusion, I personally dub it "Ancient Aliens".

haven't read the Bara Magna books in years did they ever address how Kiina gaining elemental control over water on a desert planet where survival has been a struggle for thousands of years would essentially make her a god
#bionicle#kongu#realizing just how much mahri nui would have benefited#from getting 5 books like voya nui#instead of 3#and yet#still one of bionicle's absolute best arcs regardless imo

Tarix also gains water powers but its irrelevant bc its not really commented on other than "woah, neat! Ok weird guy who just did this were listening to you". Also Tesara (jungle Village) has literal hot springs just outside of it, like whole terraces of them. Theres also a mostly normal mountain, some snowy places as others mentioned, a forest thats actually knives, one single river, and a place that has like average temperate weather and flora. Its introduced in a comic that starts off by saying that people who believe bara magna is only a desert is wrong, which kind of sucks bc ok theres exceptions but also doesnt it kind of defeat the point of big apocalypse desert. That might be why I routinely forget that place exists
oh yeahhhh Tarix. right sometimes Bionicle doesn't necessarily have time for the full world-building or emotional implications of that kind of development. but just more fun for us to consider.
dibs on living in the knife forest
#bionicle#you really don't want to live in the knife forest#all the trees are made of people#people still holding their knives#who might not actually be dead#and the guy who turned the people into trees still lives there#he wants his forest to keep growing
