How To Taste Divinity
Light candles and sit with them in the dark. You are light upon light.
Wear silk and lace and fall into bed
Wear whatever makes you feel connected and at ease
Talk to the stars, read them poetry, tell them how much you’ll miss them in the morning.
Make tea with some milk and honey and breathe in the steam curling up to your face
Take a bath and sink so the water is up to your neck. Feel the air struggle to slowly fill your lungs and come back up, breathe deeply (you don’t need fancy bath bombs/salts/flowers but if you have them then great)
Feel your heartbeat at the pulse points: wrist and neck. Then press your hand against your chest and feel your heart beating again and again.
Imagine the blood rush with each pump and acknowledge that it’s not in your control and that’s ok. Someone’s looking out for you.
Make eye contact often. Even if it’s for a split second.
Talk to a plant, give it water, nature is always there for you, waiting.
Try to feel moonlight. Bathe in it and feel it’s power to wash over you.
Reach out to graze rays of sunlight with your fingertips and slowly sink your body into sunshine as it seeps into your bones and reminds you of your own warmth
Drive down an empty highway with the windows down and imagine you’re the music being whisked away on the wind
Let yourself feel the love you have for everyone in the world. Drown in it. When you feel alone remember this abundance and know it’s reciprocated by someone somewhere. <3

living the dark academia life
messy handwriting and even messier notebooks, doodles of skulls with sunflowers dangling from their eyes
burning the corners of pages, an older look given to them, the smell of ancient given to your room
wearing the cheapest, largest brown sweaters and the most comfortable, softest cream skirts
classical music softly bouncing on each one of the walls in your room, a list of your favorite composers pinned to your wall
a black ring on your finger, your hands wrapped around a warm cup of tea
your eyes closing softly from spending too much time reading, a candle to keep you company
the wet tip of your finger, the turning of yet another page
soft brown on your eyelids, gloss on your lips
long studying session in the library, you’re curled up on your chair, seven academic books are sitting next to your side, three articles are waiting to be read
stains around the edges of your nails, your skin painted with ink
a book in your bag, a pen used as a bookmark to annotate everything that makes your hands shake
a leather belt around your waist, your old grandpa’s sweatshirt tucked in has not gone to waste
standing right in the centre of a museum, sketching the outline of a sculture, scribbling down everything there is to know about a painting – in this, your hands are still stained
letting the rain softly caress your hair, carrying an umbrella to match your velvet trousers
a smile on your face when writing an essay, a yawn from your mouth when you finally go to sleep – after your eyelids are closed, psychedelic, dark and soft dreams are reaching your mind

Dark Academia during quarantine
Has lost all sense of time: we just wake up in the middle of the night wanting to write a poem, looking for the translation of a word in our target language, or decide it’s a great time to finish a book...then we go back to sleep. What time is it? Who knows? Who cares?
Finally has all the time in the world to read and write, but is intimidated by an immense tbr pile and blank pages.
“How do you make pj’s dark academia?” is a dominant thought in their heads. I love this aesthetic so much but you will NOT catch me wearing tweed to sit on my couch.
Doesn’t want to indulge in binge watching Netflix shows because ew, modernism. But we’re so bored we’re about to hit that point.
High-key thinking about starting a(nother) diary/journal about life during quarantine. Getting those Anne Frank vibes in and possibly some $ in the future. (I am not comparing covid19 to the holocaust, please don’t come after me).
Now it’s a terrible time to want to read a specific book that is not among the million you already own, because libraries and bookstores are likely shut down.
Seriously, how many times can you watch Dead Poets Society and Kill Your Darlings?
Your Tumblr feed is probably dry because you can’t take aesthetic pictures of your oxfords during your morning commute.
Although it seems like people don’t eat in DA books or movies, you do. A lot. Even more now during quarantine. It’s ok, I do too.
A tip: Listen to podcasts! My favorites are Crime Junkie (true crime), Our Fake History (history conspiracy theories) and Dead Academics Society (MY DA themed podcast).
Coffee and tea are not really needed because you can sleep whenever you want to, but they are very much wanted still.
Your hygiene is either at its peak because showering/bathing to candlelight while listening to Hozier is a mood, or it’s very questionable because staying in your bed all day is also a mood.
Put the scissors down, do not cut your own hair. I am begging you. Actually, do it! I endorse it.
I also endorse writing letters! I haven’t done it myself yet but with this much free time in hand, why not?
Your mental health: declining.

fuck dark academia
give me i’m fucking trying academia
- walking in to class 15 minutes late in a hoodie and sleep filled eyes but at least you’re there
- half a page of notes sprinkled with teardrops because your brain cannot function no matter how hard you try
- the little smile teacher’s give you when the notice you made it to class !
- high fiving your friends as you tell them you actually went to all your classes this week
- turning in an assignment a week late but feeling proud because at least this one got turned in!
- waking up an hour after you were supposed to be in and laying in bed staring at the ceiling for an hour
- making yourself get out of bed anyways, getting something to eat and some tea before emailing you teacher and figuring out what you missed.
- endless to do lists of everything you need to make up
- scrolling through the studyblr tag for hours in an attempt to motivate yourself
- laying face down on the floor when the pile of assignments gets too overwhelming
- shutting your laptop/books and crawling into a friends arms because it’s okay to take a break, it’s okay to get comfort
- the fireworks you feel inside when you see you managed to bring your grade up and pass despite everything
- you may not have gotten the highest score or turned in your best work
- but you are trying
- and that’s all that matters.

types of dark academia
classic academia: beige trench coats, wool sweaters. plaid skirts. think femme fatale, but educated. sobbing in bed late at night over the secret history or dead poets society. tea with milk and sugar. subsequent tea stains.
darkest academia: running through the rain, dimly lit by streetlights. brown tweed jackets, dress shoes. cold fingers and colder gazes. french-pressed black coffee, piping hot. dark, candlelit rooms with ancient wood floors/walls.
light academia: white cable-knit sweaters, sparkly eyes and foggy glasses. going to art museums and falling in love with every portrait, every sculpture. caressing the petals of a rose, hearing the crinkle of leaves underfoot.
witchy academia: burning candles while reading or doing homework. black turtlenecks, velvet skirts. walking through the forest in autumn. passing a graveyard and feeling a greyish presence. waiting anxiously for samhain.
romantic academia: writing flowery poetry about someone you’ll never speak to (guilty oops). a cozy alizarin sweater, pleated skirts. slow dancing around your room to the beatles. curling up with warm, pallid cups of tea and a book.
scholarly academia: impeccable notes in class. leather bound bags crammed with textbooks and pens. lots of coffee with scones, and even more late nights. a wide vocabulary (that people constantly comment on). lives in the library.
theatre academia: shakespeare, all the time - quoting, reading, praying for a school production of a midsummer nights dream. or the crucible. memorizing lines in the wings. taking on your character’s traits, even outside the theater.

romantic academia
the fanciest white shirt you own (preferably with pirate sleeves), tucked into tweed trousers, a black blazer with some fancy buttons, black lace up ankle boots or oxfords. try and look as put together as possible. alternatively, throw on a ballgown and you're good to go!

some chaotic/punk academia things
illegally downloading books, movies and music
don't have a folder, only loose pages with many disorganized notes
messy handwriting only you can understand (and sometimes not even that)
write with any pen except blue and black (your teachers hate you)
draw and scribble in the margin of the paper (again, your teachers hate you)
open the first free page in your notebook and start writing there (turn the page and realize that you have already started another topic and you are writing with the notebook upside down)
you have a favorite pen, all the time you are about to lose it and all the time you find it when hope is lost
if you even have a pencil case, have random things inside like a lighter, a cutter, a clip, notes that you kept for being sentimental, coins, 5 erasers (and you thought you didn't have any), old gum or candy all the trash from the pencil sharpener
write poems about rebellion, headaches, how hungry you are, and the failures of the educational system on your bank
tea in recess is always too sweet and you drink as much as the lady allows
cigarette break in the bathroom (how do i never get caught on this is beyond my understanding)

Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think part of what I look for in academic aesthetic is the subtle acknowledgement of real life. Sure it’s cool to romanticise things, I love the idea of having a window in my student halls that looks across a forest and onto the ridiculously gothic Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, but there’s also a sense comfort in the everyday. If your city isn’t as old and collegiate as Oxford, build your own story within it and love it for the experiences you find. Make your time there about the people and a subject that compels you, rather than limestone bridges and writing desks.
Embrace the stopgap scrappiness of your town, the band-together resilience of your community, and the weird vinyl sofas they put in student kitchens so you can’t stain them.

oh to sit on your balcony on a sunny spring day wearing a billowy white shirt and sipping wine reading homoerotic 19th century literature while classical music softly plays in the background
