As much as I love the yoi fandom, I think so much of it gets Yuri Plisetsky's perosnality so very very wrong. They focus exclusively on his surface level traits of angry and pretty while just ignoring everything else that makes him such a compelling character. So many times I see him portayed in fics as an aimless pretty boy, which is pretty much the oposite of what he is. He isn't aimless, he's the most focused and determined character in the series. When he has a goal he works hard at it, pushing his limits. No matter what AU he'd be in you'd bet he'd be trying harder to succeed than any other character, but instead he's constantly portrayed as aimless and lazy. So many times I see him in canon verse not even caring that much about skating anymore.

What makes it even worse is that a lot of the time it's for shipping reasons. Making Yuri this down on his luck love interest for someone (mainly Otabek and JJ) to help. What's the roles I see most often for Yuri? Sex worker. Model. Sexy kitten. Arm candy. Slave. House wife. Something that's tied purely to his pretty face, while ignoring the drive that defines him. Not saying he can't be any of the above, but it's just that he's so very very often relegated to only that and it's really pissing me off.

I'm just so very tired.

C.S. Pacat & Johanna The Mad on their new comic series Fence!

Writer C.S. Pacat (best known for her Captive Prince series) has been mercilessly teasing her fans with a new Top Secret Project™ for the last few days. Well, the wait is finally over, as the L.A. Times just broke the announcement for her new comic series, Fence!

Teaming up with the ridiculously talented artist Johanna The Mad, Fence follows Nicholas Cox as he joins the world of fencing at an elite boys school and becomes embroiled in the drama of competitive sports, team romance and rivalries, and good old self-discovery.

On finding inspiration for Fence, C.S. Pacat says, “I got really into sports comics in Japan, where I lived for about five years. I love the intense rivalries, the striving, the way you can take characters to their breaking point. Haikyuu!! and Hikaru no Go are easily some of my favourite comics of all time. Fence is like my love letter to the genre.

At the same time, I’m interested in female gaze and queer gaze art. I wanted to make something that had all the drama and intensity of a sports comic, while also being joyously and unabashedly queer.  I was really inspired by Ngozi Ukazu’s fantastic hockey web comic Check, Please!, and the recent Japanese animation Yuri!!! on Ice. I started to wonder, what happens when those energies come out in a combat sport—when you add in the danger and stakes of fencing?”

“Fence means the world to me,” says Johanna The Mad. “It has always been one of my biggest dreams to draw comics, but I never thought I’d be able to work on one that I’d end up fangirling about!”

“Johanna’s artwork captures everything that is hot, dangerous, and exciting about fencing,” adds Pacat.

Fence #1 hits comic shops in November, and it’ll have covers from Johanna The Mad and Kevin Wada (and maybe someone else we’ll seeee~) and colors from Rebecca Nalty.

Just finished the first draft of a 12,000 word slowburn otayuri roadtrip fic. Fuck me, that was an experience. I've been working on it in secret for months, not posting the chapters because I was convinced I'd never finish it. But I did and I even made some fake polaroids with edited photos and fake screen shots of text convos to go with it. So it's officially the most effort I've put into a fanfic and I haven't even edited it yet. If anyone's interested I'll most likely be posting the first chapter in a week on here, because I can't figure out how to add images to fics on ao3.

Megan Phelps-Roger talks about how the people who disagreed with her interacted with her in a way that helped change her mindset and eventually leave the hateful Westboro Baptist Church. It’s an engaging and interesting talk about how to approach others, calm heated debates, and allow us to humanise the other despite what seems like an insurmountable (and evil) divide between us - and not just the concept of this but a strategy for doing it as well. Well worth the watch.

The Yuri!!! on LIFE fanbook calculated each skater’s skill levels (Such as Otabek’s here). Blacksherry_013 on Twitter created this chart counting only the four foundational skills (”Skating,” “Jump,” “Spin,” and “Step”; Not counting misc. attributes like “Decisiveness” and “Manliness”) - and Otabek & Yuri actually end up with the same total (15.5)!

It’s so strange going from the Transformers fandom to the Yuri on Ice fandom. In the YOI fandom an age gap between a 16 year old and an 18 year old is considered massive. Meanwhile in the TF fandom our problematic ship is between a character a few months old and a character several million years old.
