considering I've barely posted on this site in weeks, I think the only thing I consistently use tumblr for at this point is emotional self-harm

it's become a regular habit for me to seek out extremely argumentative political posts, usually about usamericans (or some other group I'm in, but that's the most common) being uninformed assholes or whatever, and I'll read through every single comment and reblog on it for the specific purpose of making myself feel more alone

things about Secret Santa Collab 2024 that make me lose my fucking mind:

a consistent standard of quality so incredibly high that I have no idea how this was even made

there are individual maps made by individual people in here that are the length of entire fucking games HOW

to be clear though, I haven't had much experience in working on code with a team, so that might change some priorities

but really your coworkers are cowards if they don't let you use monads in the code

feel like some enterprise "java"-inflected developers and/or "medium writers who purport to talk about code patterns" live in an alternate world where their goal is to create Intricate Structures and not. to ship a fuckin product.

see this is fun

because I completely disagree on a fundamental level with what this post is saying, but also know of and hate the class of people it's talking about for entirely different reasons!

I love my Intricate Structures in my programs. I think that programming is an art form, and that elegance and abstraction are how we express beauty in code. a well crafted program relies on so much complexity as its foundation that it becomes easy to understand again.

the problem is that java is just not a good language. neither are most languages used in industry and corporate code! if your language is not a solid foundation to support well-designed abstractions, then any attempt to use them is going to lead to confusion. so many people talk about "design patterns" in OOP without realizing that what they're writing is just plainly more confusing than if they didn't use them.

anyways the takeaway I think should be to use good abstractions and make your code as elegant as possible. unless you're using java. in which case.. damn that sucks ig?

What's the argument against ADHD being caused by increased media usage?

well I didn't really have more than a few seconds in the discussion to say what I wanted to, so it was less of an "argument" and more of a "comment"

but the point that I made was that focusing on technology as the only aspect of culture what can influence people's thought patterns is somewhat arbitrary, and there are other explanations for people tending to focus on single things for less time, such as, for example, the heightening expectations of modern life brought on by the increasing cost of living

furthermore, the article claimed that "deep attention" (as opposed to "hyper-attention") comes about as a result of comfort and stability, and. well. is life every really all that comfortable for the working class?
