Hot take time!

I know that online fandom skews young, and in this online fandom in particular seems very young, but people are really underestimating what the political and cultural environment of the early 2000s was like. Not that today is perfect (there is no perfect), but as a society we’ve come a long way on many fronts. And we’ve actually gone backward on some, progress isn’t linear and all that. But people, all people, have a tendency to assume that the world they grew up in is more or less how it’s always been. Like logically they know that’s not true, but it’s an underlying assumption that takes interrogation to counter. This feeds into rosy nostalgia about times past, and also into an at times harsh holding of contemporary-to-the-time mores to modern standards.

It’s the cottagecore utopia/evil corset paradox 😂

Anyway, the point I’m driving at is that change doesn’t happen overnight. It usually happens stone by stone and then faster and faster as time goes by. And when you’re born and/or mostly grew up post-landslide, you can’t really understand what the mountain was like before.

And it’s not to say it was right, and it’s not to say that everybody was just awful back in the day so we can write everything off as a product of their time. But it is to say that Tommy perhaps deserves some credit for being a movable stone at a time when that actually was remarkable.

And the Begins episodes already showed this.

Chim and Hen were at the forefront of the modernizing of a deeply entrenched institution. It was never going to be easy, and they knew that going in. They started moving stones, with great difficulty at first, but all the same. And Tommy was among the first to let himself be moved, almost 20 years ago. That counts for something. When the juggernaut of change comes, you can either get on board or get passed by. He did in fact get on board. They did in fact show that.

I don’t know what else to tell you.

As @itsjustpoopeh says, it’s ridiculous to expect him to have single-handedly solved systemic racism and sexism. IN THE EARLY 2000s. When fucking Hillary Duff had to do a whole ad campaign about maybe you shouldn’t use “gay” as an insult? That’s kind of mean guys? Like. You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me (my high school)!

okay, as cute as all the clothes sharing headcanons are, i do gotta point out that buck and tommy are basically the same size and the only real difference is that tommy wears shirts that fit him

and i really need someone to point that out to buck when he's trying to be cute about how big tommy's clothes are on him. never let him live it down. this is what you get for habitually wearing t-shirts that fit like they're spray-painted on and button-downs that are one flex away from catastrophic structural failure, evan buckley

I saw someone say that if Tommy was a woman he’d be just like Abby bc he’s sooo much older than Buck and there was a power imbalance and we need to stop holding Tommy up as the superior love interest blah blah blah and like

That’s so incorrect in so many ways wtf

First: if we go by actor’s ages, Tommy is 9 years older than Buck. Abby is 25 years older.

Second: Tommy is Buck’s equal, they met while actively working together, and was introduced through a mutual friend. Abby used her position as dispatcher to get Buck’s personal phone number without his permission when he didn’t even know her. That is so wildly different I don’t even know how else to highlight the absurdity of this point

i do not think some fans understand that even if buck and tommy do break up or whatever, people are.. still gonna ship them 😭 like i’m here for the long haul now, if they break up or whatever i’m not gonna stop writing them or enjoying content of them 🙏

I know we are guessing Tommy's age to be closer to Chim's and that the actor's age doesn't actually matter, but I've been thinking about how much more sad it would be if Tommy was actually only 39?

like... all that stuff that Lou's been talking about in relation to his childhood; being neglected, getting into trouble until joining the military, feeling lost and latching onto the first paternal figure in his life and then having to learn and relearn how to be himself and how to be confident about it...

what if all that happened at a very young age? what if he got into juvie when he was 16 or before? what if he joined the military as soon as he turned 18? what if he became a member of the 118 when he was like 25 or 26 (just like Buck)? what if he left for Harbour when he was 32 — which is Buck's current age, give or take.

that'd put their journeys to authenticity and self-discovery just around the same time in their lives and I'm not sure I can be normal about that now that I think about it.

Polyfire HCs To Feed The Soul

They constantly swap clothes. None of them know who owns what half the time as long as they're able to get dressed presentably if someone suddenly drops by to say hi.

Buck's Loft becomes an x pad for the trio because it never felt like home to him so he moves into Eddie's with Tommy in a guest room and they end up swapping who sleeps with who/on which bed because most nights one of them is on shift.

Christopher thinks having 3 dads is the best thing ever and drives his teachers crazy with stories about his dad who's a firefighter because they're all firefighters so his teachers dont know which one did The Really Cool Thing chris is spinning for his classmates.

Tommy picks Chris up from school in a helicopter one time and solidifies his spot on the cool list. (He had permission from Eddie before doing it).

Eddie is the middle spoon.

Tommy drags Eddie and Buck to the 217 so he can show off his hot firefighter boyfriends to his team.

A beautiful, interracial, second love second chance romance that I don’t think I ever knew I needed but I DID!

I want them to adopt me. Please. I want what they have. I have so much envy because I want that sort of relationship but also I want them as my parents.

I can’t love on them enough. One of the foundations of the show. Angela Bassett and Peter Krause knock it out of the park. I hope they grow old and beautiful together forever.

Characters. Ya know, I say this and then realize we haven’t lost all that many characters, so I may mention some really niche ones. First off! Wes, the security guard on the cruise. Please, he was precious and deserved to live. Also, I love side characters and am so sad the first mate died. Russ, the firefighter who died in the earthquake episode. Even though I like what the storyline did for Chim, I still wish Kevin had lived. Jonah? I think is his name? He’s the guy who drowned in an attic during the tsunami.

Also, while I have mixed feelings on Shannon, I do wish she’d lived. I love the arcs that came from her death and think they have tackled great subjects, but there are other great storylines that could’ve happened if she and Eddie simply divorced.

Those are all I can think of off the top of my head!

Buck’s LI’s? Buckle up, y’all.

Abby! Absolutely not. She was ok as a character. But as a love interest, no. She got Buck’s number through (in my opinion) very unethical means. I think she used him and was never serious about him, whereas she was his everything. Then she ditched him, possibly cheated on him, and only saw him next when she was engaged.

Ali, I actually really liked. She was very sweet and solid and honestly I’ll date her. While it was heartbreaking, I can understand the difficulty and the choice she made. I think she deserved longer time as a LI.

Taylor? Hell no. Here’s the thing, she and Buck as friends made sense. I loved their friendship. But as lovers? Nope. She was selfish, manipulative, and was basically a strong independent woman in all the bad ways. She and Buck were ill paired. If I never see her again, it’ll be too soon.

Lucy? Do we count her? I will here. I think there’s too much focus on Buck “cheating” and not enough on how drunk he was as opposed to how sober she appeared.

Now, I don’t mind her later on, but I generally don’t like her.

Natalia? Please. She was gorgeous omg. But as a character, bland, unsuited, glad she’s gone.

Thoughts on small spoon Tommy?

Bestie yessssss! I love your brain.

I love small spoon Tommy. Please! Such a big man, so broad and confident, curling up into the space created by Buck’s long and lanky body. He spent so long going at the world by himself. I definitely think he’s touch starved. Buck’s arms tugging him close, lips resting gently on the back on Tommy’s neck. Tommy definitely hugs a pillow so that he’s overall just surrounded. He’s never felt the need to be safe. He’s always the protector. But he feels safe for the first time in Buck’s arms.
