Okay, it’s a bit late, but here’s my AceDay contribution! I’m alloromantic asexual, ace of hearts, and realized it this year when someone jokingly suggested I might be asexual. I’m really glad I know this about myself because even though I didn’t necessarily feel like something was wrong with me, there was a sort of disconnect and lack of understanding when it came to some things. I’m comfortable and happy with myself and my asexuality. I hope AceDay can bring about not just awareness, but the same feelings in other people who up until now might not realize they’re acespec. ♡

This is a gecko that was found weeks after the owners had left the house. He was in a tank with his dead bretheren. They had put them in the attic in a far corner. Maybe they hoped the animals would never be found.
Normally geckos store fat in their tails for bad periods when food is scarce. As one can see, the gecko has used up the storage in his tail fully.
The body is literally empty as the animal has swallowed air to look bigger than it is and that it doesn´t collaps. The organs can be seen and there is not much left of the animal.
To stabilize such an immensely starved animal is not easy, often impossible.
The digestive system has shut down, feeding such an animal would make it die because it could not digest the food which would rot in the body. Or the circulation system would collaps when the body tries to use up the last reserves to digest food.
Yes, to digest food, the body needs to invest energy. If there is no energy left the animal dies when you feed them. This is true for any animal. Be careful when caring for a starved animal..refeeding takes time and much care or they collaps.
How to save a massively starved animal:
Warm them up Starved animals are hypothermic and can not digest food and their reflex to swallow is weak or missing. Food will enter the airways and they suffocate. Only animals with a normal body temperature can digest food properly.
Find a good vet who can give infusions to boost the animals. Not all vets are knowledgeable about the different needs of certain animals.(Birds can drown when liquid is injected wrongly and enters an air sac)
Feed rehydration solution, I.V. solution and much later predigested feed. Never solid food in the beginning. Because their body has no energy left to digest food, you need to feed stuff that goes directly through the mucous membran into the body. The animals are often massively dehydrated. First rehydrate, later feed them. Depending on their state it may need hours or even days to switch from rehydration-amino acid solution to predigested feed.
Never ever work too fast. Patience is key. They will collaps or die if started too soon on solid feed. Better play it safe for some days more and feed special I.V. solutions that contain glucose, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. They do not need to be digested. Those solutions flow through the mucous membrans of the digestive tract directly into the blood stream. They are already broken up into the smallest particle which normally happens during digestion.
Offer small ammounts. Normal ammounts of food will be too massive for a starved animal. Start with a tenth of the normal food allowance and feed often. For a budgie that would mean 1-3 drops of I.V. amino acid solution every quarter hour for the first 3-4 hours or longer.
Use enzyme supplements when starting solid feed The animal needs proteins and other nutrients to produce digestive enzymes. So using supplements in the feed will preserve energy that the animal doesn´t need to use for digestion.
Use the most natural food sources when starting to refeed(after the rehydration/I.V solution period)For example:Insectivorous animals thrive on finely ground up insects mixed with mineral-vitamin supplements and a pinch of enzymes. So called ready made mixes for insectivours animals based on animal/blood meal or fish meal are much harder to digest than the properly prepared natural food sources.Herbivorous animals are easier to feed with ready made mixes, but they also profit from their natural food sources. Those also need to be finely ground up and prepared.Herbivorous tortoises recover faster when wild greens are pureed, strained and the resulting mash is feed with a dropper or directly with a syringe-tube feeding into their stomach. Herbivorous animals benefit from adding ‘super greens’ to their food. Spirulina, Chlorella, wheat grass meal. Herbivorous animals need a bit of fibre to restart their digestive system, but not too much, therefor strain their feed from excess fibre. Don´t forget the enzymes
Be prepared to have sleepless nights During the first few days/weeks the animal needs small ammounts of food round the clock. This prevents overfeeding during the day/starvation during the night and provides a steady influx of energy.
The animal will get ill Certain germs and parasites are always found in animals and normally make no problems in an healthy animal. When starved animals are refeed, the germs take the chance and multiply and make the animal ill. Preventive medication is often neccessary because a growing infection would kill the animal which has a very low immune system reaction. Most often those are coccidiosis, yeast infections in the digestive tract and infections of the lung.
Wash your damn hands! On the skin are bacterias and yeasts which are normally harmless. But not for a starved animal. If you have washed your hands and used a desinfectiant do not! touch door knobs/table tops/whatever, or scratch/rub any body parts. You will get germs back onto your hands and infect the animal. Prepare the medication and feed and neccessary equipment, wash and desinfect your hands/pull on surgical gloves and treat the animal. Keep everything you need near before you take the animal out of its container.
Keep the container clean.
For non aquatic animals:Use dishclothes and put paper towels on top. This helps to use less paper towels and cushions the animal better. Use heatpads you can properly adjust. Spray saline solution to keep the humidity higher, skin and mucous membran of the animal will thank you. Do not spray on the animal. Or use a moist towel far away from the animal to keep humidity up.Offer hiding places to make the animal feel safe.
For (half)aquatic animals that breath air: Keep water levels low(but high enough so turned over turtles can roll over again.) Weak animals will drown otherwise or keep them on moist pads (ask your vet) instead. Do not use sand or other grounds commonly used for tanks. The starved animals may ingest it and die.
For aquatic animals that don´t need to surface/breath through their skin. Offer hiding places but not too much interior where germs and dirt can accumulate. Clean as advised and have a second tank where you put the animal into, so the other tank can air dry and properly disinfect. Keep a proper, steady temperature. It may need to be higher than normally advised for healthy animals.
Starved semi/aquatic animals profit from water with added minerals so their kidneys are not strained as much, also may prevent infection. Consult your vet. Adding I.V. nutrient solution to the water can help some species who are able to absorb it through their skin(ask your vet)
I am sure I have forgotten something, but that is what I can get together from the top of my head.

it’s so weird that men can make endless misogynistic comments and not have to reassure people that they don’t hate women but when women, especially those in the spotlight, talk about things concerning women they feel an overwhelming need to constantly reassure the world that they don’t hate men, that they love men.
and by weird i mean a cultural norm to demean women and overvalue men.
