Drafting an elevator pitch

An elevator pitch is a short, yet effective way for individuals to showcase who they are and what makes them stand out. Here are some tips for preparing an elevator pitch.

1. Short and sweet

An elevator pitch is a quick introduction that best describes what you represent and what value proposition you can bring to the table.

2. Be persuasive

You want to be able to grab the listener's interest by sharing your ideas or background.

3. Practice

It is important that you practice your elevator pitch so that when the time comes for you to present, you will be prepared and confident when impressing your listener.

Here is my elevator pitch!

Hi, my name is Tony and I am currently a fourth year student at Ryerson University, however I have had two years of study at Wilfrid Laurier University before transferring to Ryerson. In my spare time I love hanging out with my friends and taking care of myself by working out. I previously worked at VDF Vertical as a Marketing Intern and I have over two years of experience developing my skills as a Supervisor for Canada Computers, where I managed a team of over 20+ staff members. I am currently employed at TD Canada Trust where I was promoted to a Junior Designated Officer after just three months of employment. Although I do enjoy working in the bank, my passion lies within the technology industry and I feel I'm now ready to take on a position with more responsibilities.

Disconnect.me

By using Disconnect.me, I was able to see which tracking sites were connected to Imgur.com. Imgur is one of the largest online image sharing websites in the world so I was expecting to see that there would be websites tracking my user activity. However, it was interesting to see that large companies like Google, Facebook and Amazon would be associated as well.

Google Search Tutorial

How would you search for an exact word or phrase?

Simply put quotation marks around the word or phrase that you want to search.

Ex: "I Have A Dream"

How would you search for something on a specific site?

Type in "site:" followed by the website and the item that you're searching for.

Ex. site:www.bestbuy.ca 3080 ti

How would you correctly search for a definition?

Type in "define" followed by the word you want to find the definition of.

Ex. define technology

How would you search for a specific product available within a specific price range?

There are two simple ways to execute this.

1. Search for the specific product that you want and include two price ranges with ".." in between.

Ex. "Iphone 6 $100..$150

2. The second way is to input your product into the search bar and click on the "Shopping" tab located below. On the left side there will be a "Price" menu where you can select default price ranges or you can input your own.

How would you search for a specific filetype?

Type in "filetype:" followed by the specific type of file you're searching for. Add in additional terms afterwards if you're looking for a document that contains those words.

Ex. filetype:pdf I have a dream

How would you include or ignore words in your search?

In order to add a specific word into your search, include the "+" sign between the words you want to include. Use the "-" if you want to exclude a word. A space is only needed before the "+ and -" sign but not after.

Ex. cream +color, bass -fish

How would you find sites/pages similar to an existing one?

Type in "related:" followed by the website to find similar results.

Ex. related:www.bestbuy.com

How would you confirm the exact form of a quote even if you were missing some of the words?

Type in your quote with quotation marks and replace the words you're missing with an asterisk.

Ex. "We shall fight on the *, we shall * on the landing grounds"

How would you search for pages containing two connected words?

Simply put the word "or" between the two words.

Ex. Apple or Microsoft

How would you search for social media content containing a specific tag?

Input a "#" followed by what you want to search.

Ex. #RTX3080

Social media refers to websites and platforms where it is designed for individuals to share content quickly and in real-time. The presence of social media has gained unprecedented growth in the past decade and is continuously growing with almost half of the world engaging in online activities (Ortiz-Ospina, 2019). Before you begin posting and sharing content online, here are a few tips to ensure you’re familiar with social media best practices.

Think twice before posting

If your profile is open to the public, it is crucial that you carefully review the content you’re posting to ensure that it is appropriate and won’t cause trouble for you in the future. It’s important to remember that once you’ve uploaded content onto the internet, it’s incredibly difficult to remove so be mindful of what you share with the rest of the world.

Acknowledge and follow laws that apply online

While the internet allows us the comfort of maintaining anonymity, we should never take this for granted and empower “abuse and harassment while online” (Webroot, n.d.). There are many laws put in place to protect users from threats such as theft, harassment, and bullying. (Webroot, n.d.) These laws should be upheld and respected to keep social media a safe and pleasant experience for everyone. Actively post quality content

While this can be applied to both personal and business practices, consistency is one of the most important elements in growing your followings.
