Hi Topaz! I came here with a question.
I don't think this has been discussed yet, but if you have, forgive my ignorance.
The mortality of Nightmare's gang. He may not fully realize, since we don't know for how long he has had control over his body, but his friends - his family, are mortals. They're bound to die. (Well..... the leaves of the tree of Feelings do prolong the life span if brewed...... but it is kind of... dead...?)
Is this gonna be discussed in the fic? If not, can you tell us more about how Nightmare might digest the fact?
Oooooh, my dear friend, this thought is one that I love. I think about this A LOT, and yes, it will be a plot point later on in HNBD. And hhhhhhh... I would so like to just discuss this now, but I fear I will spoil things. In my thoughts, I have figured out the order I see them dying, how they die, and how he handles each. That will not be in HNBD, though.
Still, these thoughts haunt me enough that I even started a little bit of the death of the first one of the gang whom I envision dying. Seriously, I really do love talking about this. Not them dying, of course, I love the boys and don't want to just kill them off. But the idea of an immortal, who at one time hated mortals and wouldn't even think twice about killing one, finding himself attached to odd outcast mortals because he can empathize with them one way or another. Then, the inevitable acceptance that mortals all, at some point, die. And what about Reaper/Death and the role he plays in all of this?
I'm going to put a read more here, as the last bit will be short, but it's a little bit spoilery—not much, but still enough for me to do this.
Anyway, regarding your actual question, he knows. But that's years from now, and he doesn't want to think about it yet. He will keep putting it off and avoid the subject as much as possible. Killer will be the one who first worries about leaving Nightmare and will keep trying to bring it up, no matter how many times Nightmare tries to shut down the conversation. He won't finally open up to the fear he has for them dying until he's literally cornered and forced to accept facts.
#Death#character death#mortals all die eventually#You have no idea how many times I've discussed this with friends or thought about this#answering asks

Topaz: "next chapter will have lots of violence lol"
Me: oh! Cool! Which chapter were they talking about?
Topaz: hasn't posted a chapter since then
Me: *INTENSE SWEATING*
Ps: I just found out your account from the HNBD tag and I just wanted to say that you are so cool and your fic is my favourite on AO3 in general im literally on my second reading and taking my sweet time and dubbing every scene when I can. Hope you are doing good <3
Me: I'm going to post one chapter of HNBD a month
All of you: ... it's been three months?
Me: Huh? Sorry, I'm learning how to crochet. :3
On a side note, trying to get the next part of Gooptales out for Mother's Day, HNBD is like... 3/4th written... the dragon thing is written... I just don't have the motivation to edit it atm, What They Could Have Had's chapter is like...1/4th written but fully planned out, And I have like... two chapters written of something that will be the last thing I make in this fandom before I say "peace out" and poof. But that's some ways down the road, so no worries about that anytime soon.
I am sorry I'm late with these chapters, I don't like making all of you wait. That said, Jay, thank you for reading! And I bet, compared to me, you're the coolest. I'm so happy you enjoyed my fic and I hope you continue to enjoy it... wait? Dubbing? Like voice dubbing? I knew you were the coolest! Please let me know if you dub any scenes. I would love to hear them.
#VA's have a special place in my heart#you all help bring things to life#I love reading comics#but hearing a VA read it just makes it feel more real#Same with VA's reading fics#just love it#answering asks

Quick announcement: I have started digging through my blog and finding old stuff. Apparently, 2016 Soriel Week never got to AO3, so I will be posting them there tonight. I am preparing them now and will stagger the release of each chapter throughout the night as I read them over and edit clear mistakes, typos, or sentences that don't make sense. I am working on the second one now.

Have you been doing alright? I haven't seen you cross my dashboard in awhile and wanted to check in.
Just a busy, busy adult. I’ve been considering more hobbies to build more skills. Doing that means less time for here.
That said, I hope you are doing well yourself! Never be afraid to send in an ask. I’m just going to be slower responding most of the time. I do like hearing from all of you, though! If I could, I’d offer you a hug, but I’ll offer a virtual one instead!
I would love to say I’m doing great but the IRS is a bunch of greedy, money grubbing, nincompoops that need to get a life.
Tomorrow, I’ll feel better, after the sting of how much the bite into my account they took dies down. Right now I’m mostly a grumpy “old” dragon who wants her hoard back to the way it was.
#I’m just a grumpy today#and tired#stayed up waaaay to late finishing my taxes last night#didn’t fall asleep until after 6 also 7 AM#be smart kids#don’t be like me and pull all nighters when you start getting old#seriously i can’t bounce back like I used to#luckily i have tomorrow free too

random question but does the Nootmare pay taxes?
Sale taxes, yes. But he is not reporting his income and his property is hidden from the Multiverse IRS. So, for the most part, no, he does not pay taxes, he opposes taxes, and will gladly toss tea in any bay to prove his antitaxes point. In the end, he will eventually be brought down by the Multiverse IRS for tax dodging.
Sorry for the spoiler for the end of HNBD, which does not actually stand for How Nightmare Became Dadmare but How Nightmare Began Dodging (taxes).
#a reminder of this since it’s tax day#and no#Nightmare still did not pay his taxes#I think property tax would be too much#like#what’s his actual income and would it cover a castle and fracture of an AU?#taxes pay for government programs and amenities#he pays that all him self through money/deed/services#contracts are his thing#he’s not paying some multiverse IRS to fund a government that likely opposes him and wants to lock up the boys#he would be more likely to overthrow this silly multiversal government that dared to tell HIM he needed to pay taxes

Part 2: To the forest you fly
Start of the adventure: The Sky is Calling
The poll concluded with more votes for flying south to the forest.
---
With the grace given through heritage, you turn gracefully in the air. Your tender and giver both had an affinity to air magic, which they pass on to their young and will aid in this journey. The flight shall be long but more than worth it. The ancient forest will have a true ruler again! With that decided, the south is your path.
You pass over and around the farmlands and towns of two-legged beings; all the while, thermals and the gift of air magic keep your wings full so you can fly faster and longer than most other fledglings would. Yet, as eager as you are, you must remember that your predecessor to this land left a mark that you will need to overcome. You will need to be wise and cunning if you are to succeed. All the gifts of your ancestors within you will need to be called upon.
One thing that will need to be addressed is the fact that you are more attuned to air than you are to nature and trees. Forest dragons can commune with the very woodland they live in. It is not that they learn to travel without breaking a branch of a tree but that the trees give way to them as servants moving before their ruler. You will need to master this yourself.
And why not start tonight? Even with the air magic of your parents, you are still young and need to rest along the way. After searching for somewhere safe, you will find an old oak tree that will suit your needs. Tall and proud with branches that can hold a young dragon like yourself, with care, you land on a bough that is perfect to recline on. After tending to your wings before preparing to sleep, you perch yourself as you have seen some wild cats do in the land of your birth.
This is not a great slumber, but even in regular sleep, a dragon’s body can adapt and learn from the magic all around. As you sleep, the forest you seek calls out to you, influencing your dreams with images of green, brown, and the rainbow of flowers. You can hear it calling out in pain from the toxic magic the previous matriarch left behind. With the desire for you to heal it, the forest blesses you with nature magic. You still can not commune or command trees like forest dragons can, but you can understand them more, and you'll be blessed with more vitality and healing.
In the morning, you take wing again, and it is a short flight to reach the forest you seek. The oak you slept in the night before seemed massive, but the trees of their ancient woodland were gigantic and would make it look small. As you get closer you notice a quiet, a stillness. There is apprehension in the air as a new dragon has arrived. The animals still and so do the trees. Normally, it is customary to announce your claim, but it feels unwise at this time. Still, tradition is tradition, and what a dragon does first when taking a place as their own. Even announcing one’s presence is what a dragon is supposed to do when entering a new territory, claimed or not. But you already feel unwelcome and question whether you should sing out your song of rulership or not. Perhaps you should learn more about this place by seeking out food first. Or even a lair? There were rumors of two-legged beings; maybe you want to see what sort of two-legged beings live here? Or is there a different idea you have?
--- The poll will be released on March 22. Current options: -Hunt for food -Find the different two-legged beings -Seek out a lair
You will also need to decide if you sing out your claim to this land or not.
If you want a different option, leave a comment on the post.

Which way will you go?
Now that you have had some time to think, little fledgling, have you made up your mind?
Confused about what this is for? The link to the post for this poll is here.
#2 days left to vote#I think from now on I might just do 3 days#unless I get a sudden mass of votes that was all that was needed.

Posted the first part of the group dragon story. Feel free to check it out! Hope you enjoy if you do.
The Sky is Calling
Congratulations, young one. Do not focus on your celebration, though, as now you have a choice to make. This is the first big decision you have to make in your life as a dragon:
---
With one mighty leap, you push your body into the air. Robust wings act on instinct, helping you climb higher and higher. Finally, reaching the needed height, your wings hold steady, spread wide to catch a thermal. As your parents, their parents, and ancestors before dating back to the world's birth, you reach greater heights than you previously understood with the air’s obedience and the natural magic within. With minimal effort on your part, the winds lift you, treating you as the sovereign of the sky as heritage dictates. As a kind ruler, you don’t make the air do all the work. Those magnificent wings, like massive nets, catch the rising warm air to aid in the process. With this partnership between the magic of the air and yourself, you claim your birthright.
The sky is yours.
The land and sea is yours.
The territory you will claim will be yours to rule.
Provided that you prove worthy.
With a birthright comes responsibility and the need to decide what sort of life to lead. All dragons require a strength to help them survive, titles to be called and to have bards sing from now until the stars die, and a hoard of what things the dragon feels drawn to acting as proof of their renown. With these three things, a dragon will not only survive but attract a mate that will help carry their bloodline forward. While the songs about you may last longer than your own life, your bloodline will bring continued notoriety long after your bones become one with the earth.
But right now, your mind is more focused on the joys of flight. For a year now, you had tested these unblemished wings by gliding and flapping them against a strong wind. This was instinctual and helped to build the power required for this day. You have felt the sky’s call, but not as strongly as today. The wind sang its song of freedom and exploration as it blew against your face, coaxing and taunting any young dragon to join it in flight. Finally, surrendering to the call, your heart felt the the urgency that it is time to leave the home of your giver and tender.
It matters not if your parents were caring protectors and educators, passive observers and demonstrators, or tyrants to hide from in the shadows. You learned enough in their territory to take the next step forward. You have grown, and this flight is not only a moment of joy but the start of something new. A new world, a new life, and an adventure that will carry titles earned when it is made into a song. Just as when you broke through the shell and took that first breath of fresh, magic-filled air, life will open new opportunities and challenges. A new chapter in life to surpass just as being an eggling, hatchling, and wrymling.
Announcing this new step in this story, you bellow out a triumphant song. Harrolding to the land you are leaving, to Tender and Giver who gave you life, to the world about to be seen that:
You are now a fledgling!
But where, little fledgling, will you go? As significant as his moment of advancement may feel, you are still so young and small for one of the mighty dragons. Loved and feared. Honored and Hunted. There will be as many threats as there are allies on this journey. Dragon kind is a force of nature that is both destructive and creative. They are beings whose breath is a weapon of good or evil, whose fang and claws bring protection or death, whose mind and emotions bring cunning or intelligence, and whose heart and life can see or cause the rise and fall of many.
Through the songs of migrating birds, you gained the knowledge of various lands that may be of use. One might be the territory that you can claim and rule over. It will mold you just as the magic within will seep into it, turning it into a powerful ally. During the times of deep sleep, the land will shape your body to better suit it as ruler. During those times, the land will protect the vulnerable sleeping form. So choose wisely:
To the south is earth covered in rich forest. The previous dragon who ruled there had long since passed. Her wickedness and cruelty to the neighboring two-legged beings resulted in slayers coming from far and wide, seeking the honor and glory of being the one to end her life. While she did kill all who faced her, the last did land a fatal blow that ended her as well. Her body is said to be in the center of the territory, causing the trees to grow to abnormal heights. To claim this land, you must convince the trees to listen to your magic, not hers, which still lingers beyond the grave. Also, consider the neighboring two-legged beings. Considering their previous monarch, they may not take kindly to a new dragon on the land. How will you be compared to her? More of the same or completely different?
By flying toward the west, you will find the ocean, which may be a better choice. There are rumors of an underwater labyrinth to call home. The sea is rich with treasure, from sunken ships to delicate pearls to harvest. A port town built on the coast may prove useful, though it is home to a savage mix of two-legged beings who raid lands far and wide. If you choose to interact with them, it will be a violent life, but one that could bring many titles and a great hoard. Provided that you are allowed to join them on their adventures across the open water. Perhaps, in time, they will serve you in exchange for keeping their home and ocean travels safe. For this territory, one must hone their strength and might and learn how to be like the water. Deadly and yet serene.
Another option is to go north, to the mountains. There, you will find the mighty city of scholars and magic users. Within their libraries and schools is so much knowledge and wisdom. Wonders for a young mind like yours to behold. Be aware that an ancient gold dragon is living there already. You know very little of him. He was a giver at one time, but his mate passed away around the time you hatched. What stories have said, he is mighty and strong, both in mind and body. It will take a sharp mind to convince this grand elder of 1,000 turns or more to allow you to live in his land? To truly claim this land requires proving to him that you would be a worthy successor to his territory instead of one of his bloodline. There are other young ones there, looking to do the same. You will need to rise above them as the most worthy. Do not forget, even if you succeed, what about the two-legged and other young dragons? Will they accept you as sovereign or seek your destruction at any moment of weakness? Not all can play the game of political power that this land will offer.
To the East is an unforgiving land of sand where a canyon will provide a place to make a lair. Very little is known of that land, so there is no way to prepare for what you might face. And yet, there is a sense of adventure in the unknown that sings out to any who listen. As the ruler of that land, will you become just as unforgiving, or will you learn another way?

This is a new project of mine. Feel free to check it out. I will be posting the first part soon. The more who choose to participate, the better this will go. If you love dragons, please consider giving it a try.
Help me write the story of your dragon bloodline.
Welcome, young one...
This is a story blog that you, the readers, will help write together. Each part that is posted will have options for you to choose from for what to do next. For some, you might even be able to offer your own ideas on what you want to have happen in the comments. After two weeks, give or take, depending on the attention the blog gets, the next part will be posted.
This is not an ask blog. I will not reply to any comments or asks.
In this story, you will be a young dragon. The life of a dragon is difficult and filled with trials. Death is possible, but I will be as merciful as I can be. You have up to three chances with each dragon. If the dragon dies, there will be a poll asking where in the story you want to start again. That way, if you feel you put the dragon in a situation it was not ready for, you can try something different.
Your goal is ultimately to build a bloodline that will last for generations (aka, until all of you are bored of this.)
A reason to build this bloodline is so the story of this world told through your draconic eyes can continue. If your dragon still dies after the third try, and if you had an egg, you would then take control of your firstborn child. If you have not, then you will be the closest living youth. This also goes for if the dragon reaches the 'end' of the story. The dragon might be alive but old and had achieved all the goals that were set. Now it is time for you to see what the child does and be that offspring.
In the case of death, if ultimate death is reached as the starting dragon prior to an egg being laid, you will be a sibling. The reason to build a bloodline: Let's say we are four generations out, and the fourth dies before finding a mate; if the third had more than one egg, you are now the sibling. If that one only had one offspring, then we can venture further back to the sibling of the second generation. There are possible heirlooms or renown that might follow from the dragon you were to the youth you will play. Be careful, though, as these can either aid or hinder the young dragons.
(This is not available to the starter dragon; the starter is a fresh start)
The poll on what to do next will not come out until 3 to 4 days after the part is posted. In that time, feel free to discuss with others in the comments and think about what you want to do. Again, I will indicate when you can offer a different option. After the allotted time, all options will be put in a poll, and you can vote. Polls will last a week. If I find there does not need to be that much time between, I may shorten the length of time for the polls or time for discussion.
Thank you, and I hope you enjoy this adventure together. And remember, YOU are the dragon!
