Bloodlines: Soul Eater AU

Once upon a time I drew Leah and Rider as Maka and Soul but it was mostly a one to one costume swap (check below the keep reading for the old pieces). This time I put a bit more effort into make them characters for Soul Eater.

Leah is a meister who comes from a long family of accomplised meisters. She met Rider in the academy, and the two bonded almost straight away. Rider's demon weapon form allows his meister to generate projectiles of pure soul energy that they can hit like baseballs (that's what the two of them are generating on the right side). Also, huge shoutout to my boyfriend for giving me the idea to make Rider into a baseball bat.

I always liked this AU because Leah and Rider remind me of Maka and Soul except SIGNIFICANTLY less violent. I'm also super surprised by how quickly this came together and how much I ended up liking it. Except maybe the soul chibis, that was hard and I still am unsure about it. I understand now why all the Soul Eater characters had those little bits attached to their hair...

First one is using Leah and Rider's colors, second one is using Maka and Soul's colors.

My friends tell me I have good worldbuilding but what they don't know is I worldbuild by spending hours on end staring at my laptop writing half mad bullet points and mostly empty files

Writing and especially worldbuilding is so funny sometimes because I can tell you the details of a multi-decade astronomical cycle but I can't tell you the name of the mentor who trained my mc

Made a custom brush for the first time and tested it out on some sketches of my original characters!

Upper left: Ady (babey) and Rurik (tiger man)

I haven't done a proper design for those two yet, but they're pretty important supporting characters in the first part of the story so I knew I needed to do something to start

Lower left to center: Kai, Red, Blanche and Coal busts

It started with Red tbh, and I knew I had to include the rest of the gang

Early on in the story, Kai definitely finds Red mildly annoying at best. Red definitely is aware but he kinda thrives on being a little shit so he's constantly nudging Kai's buttons. Blanche, on the other hand, finds Red really interesting after the initial antagonism so she just likes watching the way he interacts with people (though she does have her moments when she has to duck out of the way to not get caught in his whirlwind)

I decided very early on that Kai was designated Smart GuyTM even though Red is pretty smart in his own right. I has this particular exchange rotating in my head for a few days before I drew it here, mostly because I knew it was gonna be an excuse for me to exposition without feeling too arbitrary, since Blanche doesn't know much (relatively) and is likely to ask questions for backstory reasons

Athyn Doryl Concepts: Psychopomp Creatures

I think about what happens to the soul after death a lot, and so it's no surprise that psychopomps in general fascinate me. Aside from the usual case of damn cool aesthetics, just answering the question of "where do we go from there" has been one of those things that rotates in my brain a lot. Naturally, this means I also do a lot of concepting and thinking for the process of death in my worldbuilding.

These creatures are what I came up with: a sort of corvid/hound fusion with a skull face. It doesn't have a name yet, but I have some ideas of what they are and how they operate.

First and foremost, they are boundary creatures, which means they exist on that fine line between reality and the intangible ethereal. It's unsure whether or not they actually exist, but several cultures have some sort of depiction of what they believe they look like.

Second, they are usually seen as the familiars of Ynthazul, a pseudo-mythological race believed to aid in the magic-soul cycle of the world. The Ynthazul is often called the "shepherd of death", as they are thought to oversee flocks of these psychopomps. The creatures collect the souls of those that passed, then bring them to the Ynthazul so that the souls may be returned to Athrynshe (The Sea of Souls).

I don't have a name for these yet but if I find one I like, I'll update this post with the new name.

Artist Problem:

The only time the intense need and energy to draw will hit is when it's physically impossible for you to draw

Solution: Carry a sketchbook wherever you go so the only time it becomes a problem is when you have to shower

It's been a hot minute but I come bearing Destiny 2 fishing shitposts

All in all fishing was a great addition and we collectively lost all our braincells in the one and a half hours we spent on it

Lucien and Yvaine enjoy a nice evening of watching the lanterns from the Last City float into the sky. They probably have another mission right around the corner, but for now it's nice to be in each other's company.

My submission for @d2artevents Crimson Days 2023 event! I know this is technically a Dawning scene but I felt like it was a nice scene to draw. Thanks again to Potsby for letting me draw his Guardian, Lucien, and for being my player one in game and in life ^^
