wicked, but if it was modern day america, kind of.

So I love Wicked. I always have. I read the book as a high school freshman, then got obsessed with the cast recording; I saw it in New York the next summer, then, uh… three more times on tour, I believe? The most recent being last winter.
I am, regrettably, very nervous about the films. Nothing I’ve seen has inspired confidence, which could be my own picky take but who’s to say. Everyone we’ve talked to liked it. I’m very happy for them. I’m posting this, finally, mere hours before we finally watch part 1 (we wanted to wait until it was free and we could drink at home).
Watching the play, though, did make me think of one way the films could improve: clarifying the timeline. Because Act 2 especially could be really absurd if you take the timeline at face value. Let me illustrate with a fun metaphor I came up with. It also utilizes American political and educational terms.
So.

B and I went to my folks’ house today to watch the Kentucky Derby as we do every year and after the race we were explaining some of the Locked Tomb characters and interpersonal dynamics to my mother, who loosely understands the concept of the books based on our cosplays and our custom AG dolls. My mother is also an evangelical Christian, the kind that legitimately believes spiritual warfare is real and crows are minions of the Devil who is real, so I am frankly shocked she’s never really freaked out about the necromancy of it all
BUT today after asking us one million questions about how the magic system works in the books and why we enjoy them, and listening attentively and asking good follow-up questions, she finally said something like “so…just to check, you two aren’t into this series FOR the necromancy? Like you’re not gonna try to do any of that yourselves, right?” and we were like ………..do necromancy???????? no????????????????

emerald city comic-con, twenty-twenty-five.

Been a while, etc.
I actually have a few posts sitting in drafts, including the 2024 year in review, that are nearly finished, but it turns out? Balancing a full-time job with multiple hobbies that all take a fair bit of time (writing, doing art, cosplay, dolls, media consumption) with sometimes just wanting to hang out with my wife with being a human being that doesn’t have unlimited energy with living in an absolutely exhausting political/social climate is a lot. I justify this by reminding myself that most of my favorite YouTubers upload a lot less often than they used to, too, so quality over quantity and/or frequency? Or something? Or maybe we’re all just getting old and tired.
So. Emerald City.

creative fatigue, or something.

I feel like everything I write these days is prefaced with "been a while, huh?"
I think this is actually a pretty normal thing for creators to go through. Either it's that you get burned out and the longer you go before showing something, the harder it is to bring yourself to finish it or do it or whatever, or it's that you get burned out specifically of frequent production and while you might be working on something it takes longer to finish because you want it to be quality over quantity, or maybe you're just older and you don't have the stamina you used to, or maybe it's a combination of these things.
Quite frankly, friends, trying to think of pithy and unique things to write about all the time is kind of exhausting. It's why I switched from my old post-every-day blog to this one, where my intention was to post every week, but then when I fell out of the habit of posting every week it both slipped my mind to post at all and intimidated me to get back to it because how pathetic is it that I couldn't even keep up a weekly posting schedule?
