i am afraid of what tiktok is doing to people's view of sharks.
i love sharks. i am obsessed with sharks.
and i'm glad that the "jaws" view of sharks is fading. but it worries me that people are saying things like "sharks are literally just ocean puppies". no, they're not as dangerous as a lot of people think, but they're still wild animals. do not treat a shark like a puppy. i've seen videos of people getting themselves bitten by nurse sharks. if you know anything about nurse sharks, then you know that these people were really harassing them. they're not monsters, but they're not your friends either. they're animals who will lash out if they're antagonized or crowded.
anyway sharks are still adorable and i love them very much

I am a shark defender not in the sense or “they’re puppies 🥺” but in the sense of “these are literal apex predators that are in their home. we know that’s their home, they do not intentionally eat humans bc we are not their natural prey and they’d never attack us if we never went into their habitat. that’s always the risk we take if we go too far out into the ocean and we shouldn’t demonise sharks any more than we should demonise a tiger that mauled some idiot who thought climbing into their enclosure at the zoo would be a good idea. they’re doing what is natural to them and it’s generally pretty easy to just stay tf away from them”

Well. Shark week is. Interesting this year.
"Dancing with the sharks" opening with how DANGEROUS and SCARY these sharks are immediately followed up by footage of the "dancers" pelvic thrusting beside them and harrassing the animals (all while the sharks swim around peacefully) is... a choice...
Don't trust people who act like hand feeding sharks, grabbing them unecessarily (to spin them around a bunch of times for example, like wtf), and literally grabbing nurse sharks off the sea floor to tightly hold and "pet" them is a good thing. They want money and attention.
Had to turn it off partway through because wooow. I'd recommend that no one else even turn it on.
(please let some actual science make it onto TV this year)
#love sharks and loved shark week as a kid#but it's been horrible the last few years when I started getting into ocean life again

I once chatted with a guy from Hawaii, we started talking about languages. I mentioned that while I've heard very little of it and hardly seen more of it written down, the Hawaiian language seems to have extremely similar balance of vocals and consonants as Finnish does, so it's actually pretty likely that there are some words that exist in both languages, but mean one thing in Hawaiian and a completely differen thing in Finnish - much like in Japanese.
He didn't find it plausible, so we agreed to disagree. Later on he mentioned that his name is [firstname] Kalani Kanaele, and when I told him what that translates to in Finnish, I had to spend like 20 more minutes trying to convince him that I'm actually not fucking with him.
