Arthur is such a hardened outlaw, and yet at the same time he’s such a gentle spirit. Look at his art:

He’s way more of a poetic soul than any of the other characters realise, I think. They joke about him being dumb but, really, he’s not. He has a lot going on inside that he doesn’t convey. I don’t even think he told really anyone except for Charles and I think Sadie(?)that he was sick. (Can’t quite remember exactly who, but it wasn’t many)

I like to pretend that he didn’t die on that mountain and instead is living quietly in a home in The Grizzlies, taking care of a horse and a dog and just drawing peacefully, with no one to disturb him. Yeah, he coughs, and his lungs rattle, but he’s somehow survived. He doesn’t have his journal anymore, he gave that to John, but he has a new one that he uses to draw all the wildlife he’s seeing and jot down his memories and thoughts. He thinks about John, and hopes he was able to get away with Abigail and Jack. He thinks about Sadie, and Tilly, and Mary Beth, and all of the girls, and hopes they were able to start anew somewhere. He thinks about Hosea and Dutch, the men who raised him as their own son, and how the Dutch he knew is still in there somewhere, despite the betrayals. He hopes that Dutch understood their final exchange. Micah crosses his mind, but he chooses to not dwell on the snake that sped up the tearing apart of his family. He thinks about Mary, and regrets giving away the picture to John. He thinks about Lenny, and Sean, Charles, and Pearson. He thinks about all of them, every member of his family, and carefully draws them from memory, one page per person, his pencil carefully making the strokes of the shadows falling across Hosea’s hat and Tilly’s face. He looks up out his window and sees the sun rising again, and part of him considers going out West to find one of them-John, Charles, Sadie—but he knows he can’t, that even though he was somehow given another chance after that awful fight with Micah, his time is still limited. So, instead, he returns the tip of his pencil to the page and draws.
