phillies going for the 2021 angels draft strategy i see

they won't do it, but i think the right move for the phillies right now is to retool the roster -- ranger and jt are in contract years, bohm and marsh are up for arbitration after the season and casty only has 1 year left after this plus i don't think he has been a good enough bat to justify taking up an outfield spot every day (104 OPS+ and WRC+ since joining the phillies, plus can't help chasing the breaking stuff out of the zone -- more thoughts on this later). so much of the phillies current core is built around aging guys on expensive free agent contracts (so far this season the average phillies batter is 30.3 years old versus the mets' 28.8 and braves' 28.5) that they aren't left with much roster flexibility and have been hesitant to make splashy free agency moves the last two offseasons because of the amount of money that's already owed. i don't think the window is closed yet (harper, schwarber, turner, and wheeler are still good) but i think it will close itself sooner rather than later if they don't start getting young talent onto the MLB roster.

i like the romano signing, look at his numbers from 2021-23 and ignore last season because he was battling some major injuries, if he can get healthy again it's great upside

would still like to see an outfield move, luis robert or possibly seiya suzuki? not sure what you give up for that though - i wouldn't give up miller

honestly don't really think we need crochet, our rotation will be more than fine once painter is ready

word is the cards want to trade arenado, don't think it will happen - would be paying way more than we are currently paying bohm for comparable or worse offensive production (but we already have plenty of guys on the wrong side of 30, so what's one more) and like i've said before IDK what the move is at 3rd if you do trade bohm (which i think is entirely possible, i would expect similar return to the india trade)

I would be OK with moving him, but at the same time I really wouldn't be shocked to see them keep him - he's cheap and can hold it down until aidan miller is ready. If they did trade him, I'd be curious as to what the corresponding move is at 3rd: have sosa play every day or try to trade for someone else's 3B?

my early thoughts:

hoffman should come back. I'd say 2 years and 10 to 20 million.

turnbull I would like to have back as andrew painter insurance/long relief, but I would understand if he wanted a better chance to start full-time elsewhere.

One name I think is worth looking into if turnbull doesn't come back is jakob junis - I got to see him a few times after he got traded to the reds and he did pretty well both as a starter and out of the pen.

As much as I would love to sell my soul and go all-in for juan soto I know in my heart of hearts he probably stays a yankee.

Another thing that I might have also said here last offseason is that I'd like to kick the tires on shintaro fujinami - definitely a caleb cotham project, but you can't really teach 98 mph gas - I'd try to get him on a minors deal with a spring training invite.

Alec bohm probably stays since he's still pretty cheap but I think aidan miller is on track to replace him.

Would perhaps like to see a shakeup at catcher and in the outfield - definitely marchan as the backup over stubbs (can rest JT without actively throwing), possibly consider trading marsh (much as i love him) or rojas?

oh yeah also hays can GTFO - I think wilson, kody, sosa, marchan is a fine enough bench?

I will definitely have more thoughts on this in the coming weeks and months - we will have to see what happens

Edit: braves declined option on travis d'arnaud, there's another option at catcher - won't set the world on fire but better than stubbs and more proven in MLB than any of our other catching depth

also i feel the need to say this: back in december or january i applied for an internship with the nats front office and part of the job application was answering some short-answer prompts. one of the prompts was "who do you think is the most underrated player in baseball" and i said cristopher sanchez. i believe i have been proven entirely correct. i did not get the job even though they liked me enough to send me to the next round. ah well, they're eliminated and we just clinched so who's laughing now
