For all of the northerners that stood up for Texas during our freeze and said, "Don't make fun of them, they've never dealt with this before. Their infrastructure isn't made for snow and freezing."
This one is for you.
Where I live 108°F with 80% humidity with no wind is normal.
Pacific North West is dealing historic best waves 35-40°C or 95-105°F.
First of all. Don't make fun of them for bitching about the heat. Just like Texas isn't built for a freeze and our pipes burst, Pacific North West isn't built for heat and a lot of their homes don't have AC.
If you live somewhere with a high humidity like 80+ HUMIDITY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. The "humidity makes it feel cooler" is a lie once it gets beyond a point.
If you live somewhere with a lower humidity, misters are nice to cool off outside.
Once you get over 90°F (32°C) a fan will not help you. It's just pushing around hot air. (I mean if you can't afford a small AC unit because they're expensive as hell, by all means a fan is better than nothing).
If you have pets, those portable AC units aren't safe. If your pets destroy the outtake thing, it'll leak CO2. Window units are safer.
Window AC units will let mosquitoes or other small bugs in. Sucks, but that's life.
Now is not the time to me modest. If you have to cover for religious reasons, by all means. If you don't, I've seen people wear short shorts and a swim top. It's not trashy if it keeps you from getting heat stroke.
If you do have to cover up for religious reasons, look for elephant pants or something similar. They're made with a breathable material.
Shade is better than no shade, but that shit it just diet sun after some point. Don't think shade will save you from heat stroke.
I know the "drink your water" is a fun meme now, but if you're sweating excessively you need electrolytes. Drink Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialite PLEASE. I don't care if you're fucking sitting in one spot all day. That shit WILL save you from heat stroke.
Most importantly. RESEARCH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAT STROKE AND HEAT EXHAUSTION PLEASE!
If you're diabetic and can't drink Gatorade, mix water, fruit juice, and either lite salt or pink salt
If you can afford it, cover windows with thick curtains to insulate the house
If you have tile floors, lay on them with skin to tile contact. If you don't, laying your head on cool counters works too.
If the temperature where you're at is hotter than your body temperature, don't wear heat wicking clothing. Moisture wicking is safe though.
Check your medication labels. Many make you more susceptible to sun and heat
-Room temperature water will get into your body faster. This is something I learned doing marching band in high summer in Georgia, and it saved all of our asses. Sip it, don't gulp it, especially if you're getting into the red; same goes for whatever fluid you're drinking. And just in general drink during the day.
-If you are moving from an air conditioned space to an un-air conditioned space, if at all possible try to make the shift gradual. When my dad and I were working outside and in un-ac houses a few years ago, he'd turn the air down to low in the truck about ten-fifteen minutes before we got where we were going. This way your body doesn't go from low low temps to high temps. S'bad for you.
-If you can, keep your lights off during the day. Light bulbs may not generate a lot of heat, but the difference is noticeable when it gets hot enough. I literally only turn my bedroom light on in the evening when it gets too dark.
Don't be afraid to just like... pour water on yourself if you need to. The evaporation will cool you off.
Put your hand to the cement for 15 seconds. If you can't handle the heat, it'll burn your dog's paws. Don't let them walk on it.
Dogs with flat faces are more prone to heat stroke. Don't leave them out unsupervised.
Frozen fruit is delicious in water.
Wet/Cold hat/handkerchief on your head/neck will help you stay cool.
Pickle juice is great for electrolytes! You can even make pickle juice Popsicles!
Heat exhaustion is more, "drink water and get you cooled off." Heat stroke is more "Oh my god call 911."
Image Description provided by @loveize
[Image description: an infographic showing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The graphic is labeled "Heat Dangers: First Warning." Signs of heat exhaustion: faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, cool, pale, clammy skin, rapid, weak pulse, muscle cramps. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat exhaustion, get to a cool, air-conditioned place, drink water if conscious, and take a cool shower or use cold compress. Signs of heat stroke: throbbing headache, no sweating, red, hot, dry skin, rapid, strong pulse, may lose consciousness. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat stroke, call 911. End description]
Be safe.

A night in 221b Baker Street - The observer and the observed
[detail shots under the cut]
This piece was created with all the love I have for Sir Conan Doyle's detective and his biographer. Over the last six months my knowledge of Sherlock Holmes went from barely there to quite extensive (including but not limited to the stories themselves and the real life of victorian middle class people)
I'm quite aware this piece is anything but perfect but I've poured a lot of love (and time) into it.

Okay but now I want a show with young Sherlock and his grandmother.
😭😭😭😭 GUYS GUYS I JUST FOUND OUT MY FRIEND HAVE READING "GRANDMA HOLMES" INSTEAD OF "GRANADA HOLMES"
Ok so quick context. I finally convinced my friend that's reading Raffles (and loving it) to give a try to Holmes stories and they told they felt a bit intimidate by how long its the canon so I was trying to suggest adaptations they could watch as a first contact and bc my friend really likes stories that are faithful to the text ofc I mention Granada Holmes... And its been a while since then... Weeks
#sherlock holmes#grandmother holmes#maybe the one that was vernet's sister#i don't do kid fics#but i'm having ideas

It just occurred to me that people may indeed not know what Yellow-backs were.
Basically they were very cheap novels one could buy at railway stations to pass the time on long journeys and later at other places too. Their literary quality were shall we say dubious. If we were to translate their content to modern day concepts they'd be true crime novels, hastily written biographies of celebrities like the Kardashians and popular spy novels, thrillers, or semi erotic novels a la 50 Shades of Grey. While they didn't break the porn ban of the time, some of them were most certainly racy.
It's funny Watson admits to reading them because he's kind of saying, "hey people, I have a trash taste in literature!". He certainly leaned towards popular and easily accessible fiction.
One of my favourite things about Watson in Granada Holmes is that he has a little hobby he indulges in (aside from observing Holmes under the microscope and documenting his findings for the world to see), namely building model ships! He does it in the Resident Patient, I think, and like??? Thats so wholesome?? And then also Mrs Hudson being supportive of his arts and crafts, like: "Your little ship is looking so great already, Dr Watson!" It's adorable okay? I love me a Watson who has fun little hobbies like this

Why isn't AO3 higher? Because AO3 isn't even two decades old and fan fiction predates the existence on the internet in any form with a considerable amount of years. Not to mention that a whole lot of people in fandom is well over 40.
Please participate in my research (also, if you say other, please put it in the tags/comments !)

Letters from Watson... is coming back!
You might have been wondering where Letters from Watson vanished to. Didn't I say I was going to go back to the beginning and post the short stories again in 2025?
The the thing is, Substack is no longer a company that I want to continue to support (TL;DR it's attitude towards moderation means it's become a bit of a breeding ground for white supremacists and I don't want to steer people in their direction) but I had trouble finding another home for this behemoth of a mailing list which had 15,000+ people subscribed at its peak and was sending out 12+ emails a month. A lot of the quotes I got were in excess of $1000 a year, and while I love LfW... I have my limits.
So, I've migrated over to a Tumblr blog. If you use Tumblr, you'll be able to reblog and interact with posts containing the stories. If you don't, you can visit Letters from Watson to follow along.
If you'd like to continue receiving emails, I recommend using Blogtrottr - put in the website name and your email, and you'll get an email every time this blog updates!
I'm going to be making a few changes on the original format with the aim of shaking things up a little and being a bit kinder on myself. Namely I plan to do one email a week, and keep the short stories as whole entities rather than splitting them up. I also think it would be fun to read the stories in publication order. My plan is to begin posting in September.
I hope you're all as excited as I am for this new Letters from Watson era!
Why not pop over to the Discord and say hi?
