It's such a shame that we don't get to see Barney in the show, because he's one of the few characters in the books who really seems to understand this facet of Hannibal. (I suppose his role as Hannibal's immediate custodian gave him a better understanding of this than others...)

Perhaps my favourite Barney scene is the one at the end of Hannibal, when he sees Hannibal and Clarice in their box at the opera some years after they run away together. Most other characters would try to find some way to benefit from the situation by handing Lecter in. Barney leaves the country.

He understands that Hannibal is a wild animal, that he can't be held in captivity safely. Better to let him stay in the wild and keep your distance.

A common theme of Hannibal is people surrounding him think that things can’t possibly get that bad if they’re careful and in control, but inevitably they learn just how wrong they are.

It reminds me of this incredibly gruesome case of a man who kept pet monitor lizards and believed he was in control of them even after one had bitten him and caused a nasty infection. He believed it was nothing but a “love bite”. The man ended up dying of infection and being eaten by his lizards.

You can be fascinated and be infatuated and obsessed with wild beasts, but at the end of the day, they’re still beasts. You are at the mercy of their intelligence and temperament and you are in their territory.

So why is it ever (Pikachu face) surprising when you get exactly what you deserve when you show them such glaring disrespect?

bryan fuller mentioned they had shot scenes with hannibal scuttling around baltimore via the steam tunnels and when i saw a car painted with a biker club called murdercycles, i was hit with inspiration. walking would be so slow and so logically, bicycle! imagine the crinkles and squeaks as he cycles around in his murder condom.

i used a lot of references on this one: a still from an ad mads did on a bike to get me started on him on a bike, his face from a photoshoot that had similarish lighting, various plastic suit stills, pictures from a milwaukee steam tunnel, a model i created in the app magic poser to get an idea of the shadows on the floor and pipes and a few bike models in sketchfab.com

this is beyond my abilities really so was in the weeds the entire time, hence the excessive number of hours spent on it. but i'm fairly happy-ish with how it came out. i could keep tinkering and refining and perfecting but i'm trying not to do that. too much.

This discussion about the cuck chair in Hannibal's kitchen has got me thinking about weird interior design choices.

Chilton describes this as his guest room:

I'm sure that Hannibal put the set dressing in there, but even without all the funky medical/catering equipment, isn't this a bit odd?

It adjoins his wine cellar.

It has one tiled wall and one stainless steel wall.

The door for what is presumably an en suite (given that this is a 'guest room') has a window in it.

Are those ten (10) light switches?

(This is a small tangent, but what did Hannibal do with all the original furnishings? I don't see a bed or wardrobe. Does he put it somewhere else in the house? Furnish his own house by stealing other psychiatrists' furniture? Take it all to the tip? On his own? Just picturing him in his little murder suit, carrying a double bed over his head like an ant...)

We know that Chilton isn't The Ripper, but his interior design choices do lead me to believe that he is a psychopath.

Don't even get me started on Bedelia.

Hannibal has such life coach potential. So much of the dialogue in this show could be taken as motivational catchphrases for self-improvement:

'Who you were yesterday is laid waste to give rise to who you are today.'

'It's the prospect of death that drives us to greatness.'

'What we take for granted about our sense of self, everything we see, everything we remember, is nothing more than a construct of the mind.' (Stoicism bro, is that you?)

'Adapt. Evolve. Become.'

This man could be running Tony-Robbins-style self-actualisation conventions, but instead he directs his energies to nurturing the violent urges of his friends and patients. He gets so much flack for the whole eating people thing, but he could be so much worse.
