smthn that's bothering me a little is so many people seeing Sue as just a younger version of Elisabeth - she's not, and the movie has more to it than just an examination of youth vs age (or mother vs daughter.) the substance is advertised as making a Better you. Sue's everything society wants her to be even if she hates it - she has a camera pointed directly at her ass and is visibly uncomfortable and has to leave when it's projected for the whole set to see, she grits what teeth she has left and smiles because a man with power over her tells her to, she can't stand not being Perfect The Way They Want Her To Be so she has to start again. there's a reason she screams control yourself! and injects the activator again wailing for it to make her Better. what's tragic is even if you're everything they want you to be it's a facade that you can't keep up and she can't deal with that in any other way than self destruction because of the ideals Elisabeth imbues her with

i want to highly commend the substance for being able to capture the psychological torture of being in a bathroom at a magnitude unseen since saw 2004

im still thinking about the substance because yes it is about the beauty standards women face, but i think it could also b interpreted as a metaphor for mother daughter relationships. sue is literally made from her. the huge scar on her back. the scene where elisabeth is watching the interview and screaming abt how sues beauty secret is her and she gets it from her. like yes in a very literal sense she gets it from her but also she came from elisabeth, she gets it from her, she gets it from her!!!! the growing resentment between BOTH of them. elisabeth for sue doing all the things she feels she cant at her age, taking the opportunities that were once presented to her. sue for holding her back, for constantly having to come back, for being old. remember you are one because yes you are the same person but also this is your mom and htis is your daughter and this is your future and this is your past. am i reading too much into this probably idk but damn. this movie fucks
