And so Yue Qingyuan, Mu Qingfang, and Liu Qingge arrive, with varying levels of excitement over the letter they received, without even knowing that the other two were invited for the SAME reasons :D

It's completely hilarious that Shen Jiu doesn't even know which of the three could be Shen Yuan's father because his child is identical to him lol

Rereading SVSSS and I’m really just repeatedly struck by how much of a caring person SY!SQQ is. Obviously his kindness towards Binghe is complicated in that a) it is to a certain extent intended to prevent himself from being horrifically tortured in the future and b) Binghe is probably his favorite book character, both of which would doubtlessly make him be kind to Binghe even if he wasn’t generally a kind person, but MXTX makes abundantly clear that Binghe isn’t an exception. Probably the most blatant early example of this is with the Skinner Demon. Despite the fact that they (which is the pronoun I’ll go with, because the Seven Seas translation does, and the Skinner Demon’s gender is a bit unclear) are a serial killer who is groping him and planning to kill him (and Yingying and Binghe), Shen Qingqiu sympathizes with them:

“Part of him was disgusted, but another part was sympathetic. Honestly, this demon was quite pitiful. It sounded like Die-er had originally been a man, but they had to keep using the skins of women due to their condition. After such a long time, of course that would make you a little twisted…” (Seven Seas translation, pg. 76)

And even after killing them, in inarguable self-defense, he feels guilty:

“This was the first time Shen Qingqiu had killed someone. But he didn’t hold back, not even a little. First, because this was a book; second, because this was a demon who’d killed countless people; and third, because if he didn’t, he’d be the one who got killed. Shen Qingqiu gazed down at the horrible state of ‘Die-er’: four limbs twisted and broken, bleeding from the seven facial apertures. He turned away, bombarding his own brain with a barrage of his three reasons until they blocked out the screen of his mind.” (Seven Seas translation, pg. 83)

There’s not that much of a point to this, but. SVSSS ultimately starts because SY cares, because he gets so emotionally invested—otherwise, why would he be so upset at PIDW ending in an unsatisfactory fashion?—and I find that aspect of his characterization to be a really compelling throughline!!!

I think Shen Yuan should be transmigrated as Shen Qingqiu's son that he In Canon Lost (tragic backstory type shit that even Airplane was like, okay, that's a bit much) but due to Airplane's interference survived. But he was never supposed to exist and he knows too much and understands too quickly and, hey, Peak Lord Shen, did you fuck a demon.

One of my favorite plots for the Shen brothers it's when everyone sees Shen Yuan and be like "oh, he's so cute and soft and pretty, he could never be that bitch Shen Qingqiu's older/younger/twin brother", except Shen Yuan hears that person call his brother a bitch and words come out of his mouth that make that person regret waking up in the morning, and humiliates them in such a disgusting way that no one ever dares to insult Shen Qingqiu in front of his brother... or doubt that they are brothers

Shen Qingqiu accidentally got caught in one of the plagiaristic wife plots from Airplane, becoming cursed like Medusa. Literally. Anyone he sees turns into a stone statue and has many snakes instead of hair. Airplane said it was an interesting way to explore papapa blindfolded and Shen Qingqiu hated him more for it.

However, the only one who now knows his situation is Mu Qingfang; in the eyes of the rest of the Sect, Shen Qingqiu was blinded as a result of some curse. He hides the snakes with talismans drawn on his skin that make people unable to perceive them, they just see him all the time with his long hair loose and untidy.

Snakes are a piece of shit. They hiss and talk all the time and only Shen Qingqiu can fucking understand them. They gossip about how sexy Liu Qingge is, talk shitty about Airplane, and make weird and unfortunate comments all the time. Shen Qingqiu can hardly concentrate many times.

Snakes are also... nice. In a way. They nibble at his cheeks and force him to eat something. They tell him secrets they hear. They smell the air and tell him when it's going to rain or if a disciple has been misbehaving. With Luo Binghe in the Abyss, they are certainly pleasant company.

Then Jinlan arrives, and Shen Qingqiu may be blind to the jianghu, but that doesn't mean he won't show up. It will help even with a blindfold – in fact, he can see through it, albeit in black and white and mostly in very poor quality. It's as if he's using his qi to see thanks to the talismans he's developed with Mu Qingfang! Which also means that when Without-a-Cure attacks him, he's completely blind behind the blindfold, but oh well. Occupational hazards.

And then, Luo Binghe is there.

And their snakes go fucking crazy, excited, not one of them is scared, damn it! They've all heard of Binghe – seriously, Shen Qingqiu may have told them about Binghe, but SERIOUSLY! Don't put it like that! It's just his disciple who came back to kill him. And the Protagonist. YOU, ENOUGH SAYING HE'S SEXY.

Shen Qingqiu survives the first encounter without being dismembered, with the whole bunch of snakes murmuring and squealing excited hisses that only Shen Qingqiu can hear and understand. Fine. He just needs to protect himself with Liu-shidi and...

And of course Luo Binghe steps forward, cornering him in his own room. Of course he had to be faster and...

God, seriously, stop saying he's hot!

Shen Qingqiu is grateful that no one but him can hear any of those chaotic snakes. Except that–

Why the HELL can Luo Binghe also hear and understand them!? Seriously, Airplane!? That wasn't in the novel!! Luo Binghe, don't castrate your scum Shizun for being lustful too, all that stuff about you being sexy and hot isn't just thoughts you're accidentally hearing! It's the snakes in the hair of this master!!

... Why doesn't Luo Binghe seem disgusted by all those snake murmurs, though? There's no way he's okay with Shen Qingqiu thinking that way about him – AND IT'S NOT THAT SHEN QINGQIU THINKS THAT WAY ABOUT HIM!

CHAPTER FOOOOOUR

svsss au where shen qingqiu can't go through with the endless abyss quest, and is just staring at binghe's tear-streaked face, listening to him rambling through excuses and apologies, not saying anything himself. he can't make himself do it, and prepares himself to die, but since the quest must be completed, the world bends to fulfill it, accidentally throwing both luo binghe and shen qingqiu into the abyss.

the stress of it causes shen qingqiu to have a qi deviation, and together with the sheer absolute force of demonic qi slamming into him from the abyss, he's out before he even hits the ground.

since the evil speech didn't take place and shen qingqiu never did anything except stare at luo binghe with an inexplicable look of resignation on his face, luo binghe is hopeful that it's not too late, and he does everything he can to drag his shizun to a "safe" place once they're in the abyss. now, luo binghe doesn't just have himself to save, but his shizun as well, and the force of his determination activates his full protagonist aura (aka binghe is planning to x2 speedrun this thing).

when shen qingqiu wakes up again and finds that he's completed the abyss quest, he doesn't waste a second before comforting his little demon lamb and assuring him this changes nothing, and binghe isn't evil for being a demon.

shizun's words give binghe the additional motivation boost he needs to start tearing through the abyss to find a way out, and though the abyss is horrible and all-consuming, it isn't as bad now that shizun is here to treat his wounds and comfort him and give him loads of information that, by all means, shizun shouldn't have known about, but he does, somehow, and it makes binghe's travels infinitely easier (and also avoids loads of wife plots shen yuan never liked).

they aren't going as fast as shen qingqiu would have liked, he isn't going as fast, he can barely breathe down here and his qi is like a beacon to abyssal creatures, only barely hidden because of without-a-cure, and he's trying to tell binghe everything he knows as soon as possible, to give him everything he needs to get out of the abyss by himself, because shen qingqiu knows he won't make it that far.

the abyss isn't made for him, both narratively and literally, he can't survive here, it's a miracle he even survived the initial drop. he can't bear to tell binghe, but he knows, and meng mo seems to know too, when he visits shen qingqiu in a dream to ask him how he's going to break it to the boy. shen qingqiu has no answer. the plot has been thrown completely off, and for the first time shen qingqiu is at a complete loss. he was never supposed to be here, and luo binghe was supposed to kill him after getting out, what will happen to the plot now?

of course binghe notices, eventually, that shen qingqiu is slowly getting poisoned by the abyss, and that shizun's surplus of doting isn't just to show acceptance, it's to say goodbye.

and shen qingqiu does die in the abyss, after little more than a year. it isn't even a beast or a plant or the acid lava boiling ground that kills him, nothing binghe could have fought or prevented. one day, after resting in a hidden shelter, shen qingqiu simply doesn't get up. his qi has been entirely corrupted, his meridians torn beyond repair, and he's gasping for breath between every bit of information that he tries to make a sobbing luo binghe remember. shen qingqiu has never seen binghe as devastated and lost as he does now, and it's horrible, but he can't do anything about it. the mushroom body isn't ready yet, he holds out no hope for that.

since luo binghe is the protagonist, shen qingqiu is determined to make sure binghe grows stronger from this all and continues his path to becoming powerful and heroic, basically making it his dying wish.

shen qingqiu dies, and his soul is transported to the mushroom body, but it takes years for it to fully develop, and binghe is convinced shen qingqiu is dead.

like in svsss he gets into a war with cang qiong about shen qingqiu's body, because binghe still tries to bring shen qingqiu back.

seven years later, shen qingqiu digs his way out of a grave and, because there is no bad blood between him and binghe this time, immediately goes to cang qiong sect, covered in dirt, and asks what he missed.

Okay, hear me out

PIDW colludes and begins invading Shen Yuan's world and, by default, Shen Yuan.

However, he is immediately rescued by Luo Binghe, a man who claims to be fighting against the demon forces to save Shen Yuan's world from the same horrible fate his own suffered.

Luo Binghe thinks his faked invasion and then fake rescuing from the invasion is endearing him to Shen Yuan, this world's 'kind Shizun'. He doesn't know about PIDW, doesn't know Shen Yuan has read PIDW and thus knows Luo Binghe is full of shit.

However, Shen Yuan can't help but play along; not many people are being seriously hurt and Luo Binghe seems determined to 'save' the world with Shen Yuan by his side. Maybe he just wants a friend? Shen Yuan can provide that and, when Luo Binghe trusts him enough to tell him the truth, convince him to stop this whole... invasion thing.
