Commissioned art + details & process below

The ideation process for this commission:

I was excited to receive this commission, because I love religious themes and gore. Right up my alley. First step was to note down some concepts and these concepts I wanted to depict, as you can see in the thumbnails developed. The first ideas were gore, sacrifice, mother Mary symbolism, we came up with a story for the commission. Then I started drawing thumbnails, eventually the flamed heart and the seven swords were added to the picture and that’s when I thought the image was finally maturing. Last concept I thought of was pelicans, symbolizing self sacrifice. My immediate thought was a jewelry made by my friend, Celestial-fang in the shape of a swan with wings around its body and viscera exposed. I didn’t want my art to look too similar to my friend’s jewelry, so I made some changes.

Coming up with an idea snd maturing it throughout the work, was the most difficult part of this illustration. This definitely would be so much more difficult had I jumped into drawing an illustration without thumb nails first; I used some of the advice in this video recommended to me:

It was mid rendering that I realized maybe I should’ve drawn a couple more thumb nails because I was struggling with composition, quite a lot. I thought of scraping the whole thing off and starting over, but instead I told myself to take a break and to instead focus on fixing the issues.

This is the result. I ended up being happy with it, despite the challenges.
