Prologue

The Great Three, who were the leaders of the underworld, thirsted for blood. People had come to realize that wars only brought suffering, and that the rewards were not worth it if there was no one left to claim them. But not everyone welcomed peace. The greatest of Hell desired an even greater, though quieter, chaos.

Ambisie, the sin of greed, chose a poor and backward place where she could act according to her whims. Yehirut, the sin of pride, sought a place he could easily control and where the people could be used for his own purposes, capable of executing complex commands. Segnities, the sin of sloth, preferred animals over humans and thus rarely associated with mankind. Ikari, the sin of wrath, loved sorrow and suffering, and searched for the most miserable place on Earth. Invidia, the sin of envy, desired a flourishing land he could boast about to the others. Lagneía, the sin of lust, longed for many beautiful people who could entertain her. Pohlepa, the sin of gluttony, although he wanted everything, ended up receiving perhaps the smallest and most useless share.

These seven allied themselves with humans and, in exchange for sacrifices, opened the gates to the realm of the dead.

After the Third World War, they ushered in a dark yet somewhat happier era for humanity. Over the years, seven great hunting associations were formed, and their soldiers gained power through the demons. Yet, as the saying goes, everything comes at a price. Those who drew strength from the underworld were bound to serve the corresponding sin after death. However, from among the people rose the Leaders and the Guardians. The Leaders were the best of their nations, often maintaining a good relationship with their infernal partners. The Guardians each commanded a hellspawn tied to one of the seven deadly sins; their duty was to keep these creatures in check and to use their powers to protect their homelands and preserve peace.

Among the greatest Leaders in history were:

– Zensen Aoi, under whose leadership Asia underwent unprecedented development, – Brigit Meyer, who ruled the European Federation for 86 years, – and Valerio Leoniro, who ascended to leadership of North America at the age of 15 and held it until his death.

But perhaps an even greater name than theirs was Zensen Ai, remembered as the strongest Guardian the world has ever known.
