Roanoke, Virginia. I went there for the Big Lick Comic Con. The Convention was OK. I will post that sometime soon. But the trip to Virginia from Tennessee was quite enjoyable. After a stop at Buc-ees for food and souvenirs, I hit the road again and arrived just after dark in Virginia. The next day I got to tour the Historic Downtown District and shop at a variety of shops and restaurants. I recommend downtown Roanoke if you're a hauntings buff. There are several haunted tours I did not get to do because of time constraints. Part two of this trip will appear soon. Today I will just post some pics from the Downtown area.

Roanoke City Market offers a lot of shopping and dining options. I would definitely recommend spending a day here. Center int he Square has a museum and theater and shops all worth exploring. As you can probably guess by my other posts I love Coca-Cola murals. Here is the one directly downtown.

Christmas on Main Street, Savannah, Tennessee
Yesterday I attended this event and it was wonderful. It was like something right out of a movie. The streets were lined up with smiling faces and live music playing in the background. The kids were Ice skating around a Christmas tree and the entire town was decked out for the holidays. The movie theater which opened its doors on November 10, 1931 showed It's a Wonderful Life. You can visit with Santa Claus, write him a letter and mail it at a special mailbox or make something special in Santa's Workshop. The shops were all opened late and you could feel the Christmas spirit everywhere. The only thing missing was snow. If Hallmark wants an American location for one of their movies they should really consider Savannah Tennessee... and so should you!

Jesse James Birthplace, Kearney, MO.
The Jesse James Birthplace in Kearney, MO in Clay County is another great place to visit. There is a 3 room museum and the house and grounds. The staff the day I was there was very knowledgeable and helpful. I just wish I would have had more time to spend there.

Disney 100 that is in Kansas City , MO until November is absolutely awesome! It is housed in Union Station a historical landmark of its own. There are several rooms in the exhibit that feature different parts of the Disney experience.

Where it all began tells the origin story of Walt Disney's Studio and Mickey Mouse. It covers his early childhood in Marceline and his time in Kansas City.

After that each room takes a different part of Walt Disney's career to focus on. From where the stories come from to the innovations Walt Disney Studios made in both animation and live action. There's a room that focuses on the music, an integral part of the Disney Magic. A room that features all the ways that the world around us plays into Walt's World. Walt incorporated nature into his movies and shorts but he also incorporated nature into all the parks. He was a conservationist and an environmentalist long before those things were saddled with negative baggage and press. The Spirit of Adventure room features all the stuff that is happening in the world of Disney now, and then of course...

The end of the show is Disney's glimpse into their future as they promise they have only just begun. So if you are a Disney fan you really need to get to Kansas City before January 5, 2025. The popular exhibit has been extended through the holidays!!!!!

If you are a Disney fan I hope you get to go before it leaves Kansas City. Below is the link in case you want to make reservations for this amazing exhibit!

The Walt Disney Hometown Museum in Marceline, MO. If you want a truly historic Disney experience this is it. This is where the magic began. Walt spent his early childhood here and it informed all that became of Walt Disney Studios and the Theme Parks. Kaye Malins the founder of the museum actually knew Walt personally as he stayed at her house many times when the Disneys would come to Marceline to visit.
The museum is full of Disney treasures but the town itself is the real treasure. It is where Walt got many of his ideas for Main Street USA in Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Just visiting the various sites around town will take you the better part of the day and the museum will take you a full day if you want to watch all the video stations that are set up throughout the museum. Plus there is a 2 hour movie of Walt's story as told by the legends of Hollywood. I was unable to do half of what I wanted while I was there and I still have a great experience. I can't wait to go back!

Johnsonville State Park in Humphrey's county Tennessee opened in 1971. It is a historic park built on the site of the Battle of Johnsonville in 1864. It commemorates both the battle and the town of Johnsonville which was flooded by the creation of Kentucky Lake by the Tennessee Valley Authority in the 1940's. There is a really nice museum with a 20 minute video telling the story of the Battle of Johnsonville and a lot of artifacts that were found on the site. There are lots of activities to do at the park including a special observance on November 2nd of the battle itself at the park.
