“What-what is this? Let me out!” Hermione pounded against the ungiving air. Muted explosions rumbled through the walls, closer and closer. “This wasn’t the plan!”

Fleur pressed a hand against the boundary. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, taking in her lover’s face. The betrayal, the determination, the fear. “I don’t know how they found us, but Bill and I will lead them away.”

“No, there’s too many of them. That’s why we-“

“That’s why I can’t let you go. Harry needs you.”

What about what I need? Hermione wanted to scream. “This isn’t going to work. They’re looking for us. They’re not going to stop-“

Fleur uncorked the vial in her hand. Bitterness swelled in her throat but she forced it down. Her torso shrank and her hair grew longer and curlier.

Hermione lost her words.

“I won’t let them find you.” It was a promise.

“Fleur! FLEUR—“

Fleur covered her ears against the desperate barrage of Hermione’s cries, shutting her eyes to the world. When she opened them again, the room was silent and there was no trace of anyone else. She stared at the empty space, knowing Hermione was on the other side, glaring at her, probably cursing her name.

“Be safe, ma cherie.” She rushed off, glimpses of her face reflecting off the broken windows. She prayed it wouldn’t be the last time she’d see her lover’s face.
