According to an article in the Supply Chain Dive, Shopify is acquiring Deliverr for approximately $2.1 billion in a bid to create an end-to-end logistics platform and expedite the development of its fulfillment network, the company announced Thursday. Deliverr offers e-commerce fulfillment and order storage services, shipping more than 1 million orders per month in the U.S. from thousands of merchants.  According to a news release, the company’s software and asset-light network of warehouse, carrier, and last-mile partners will complement Shopify’s large-capacity, self-operated warehouse hubs. For Shopify merchants, the acquisition will reduce fulfillment complexity and increase access to next-day and two-day delivery services. “The idea here is we want to get our merchants high-reliability, fast and affordable delivery, and we think we can do that much faster with Deliverr,” President Harley Finkelstein said. According to an article published by the WLKY Digital Team, authorities said that a Florida man was pulled over Friday while transporting a box truck to Indianapolis that was heavily loaded with thousands of pounds of unrefrigerated food and untaxed alcoholic beverages. This happened last week when a motorist notified authorities of a Penske box truck traveling north on Interstate 65 near the 50-mile marker, according to Indiana State Police. The motorist told officials that the box truck had a blown tire and was continuing on the interstate, throwing debris into the path of other motorists. State police said the truck was also leaning to one side, and the driver was having trouble keeping the vehicle under control. The Jackson County Health Department was then notified of the box truck, and they inspected the box truck. They determined that the vehicle weighed approximately 15,000 pounds more than is allowed by law. Health department officials said they had to destroy 200 pounds of fish and 400 pounds of vegetables because they were not properly refrigerated. Meanwhile, a search warrant helped state police confiscate the untaxed alcoholic beverages on the truck, about 400 cases of beer. The driver was cited for transporting perishable foods in excess of acceptable temperatures and not having a required logbook. There were also several other motor carrier violations. A truck driver has been awarded an $8 million settlement after becoming paralyzed following an incident with an Iowa Department of Transportation snow plow.  64-year-old Terry Bunting was pulled over on the shoulder of Highway 67, clearing the windshield of his tractor-trailer, when an approaching Iowa DOT snow plow driver pulled the wrong lever and failed to retract the snow plow blade. The plow blade then smashed into Bunting, who was seriously injured as a result.  Bunting was left with spinal and kidney injuries, blood loss, and a fractured pelvis and ribs. Bunting is now partially paralyzed and must use a wheelchair. He has already collected more than $1.25 million in medical bills and expects those medical costs to continue throughout his life. Experts estimate that Bunting could rack up more than $7 million in medical bills. A three-person state appeal board approved an $8 million payout to Bunting. The latest news coverage by CNN Business reported that Shell reported a record first-quarter profit of $9.13 billion on Thursday. This was due to higher oil and gas prices, stellar refining profits, and the strong performance of its trading division. After the last of the energy majors reported results, Shell joined sector rivals BP and TotalEnergies in making big profits from the volatility of commodity prices stirred up by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Even with the $3.9 billion charges, the company's profit beat its previous record—set in 2008, the year of its most profitable quarter ever. The company says it is just wrapping up a successful run in energy trading with Russia before pulling out of that business entirely. Oil and gas companies rose 1.8%, while Shell's shares went up 3.3%. Shell, the world's largest LNG trader, said its sales of liquid natural gas rose 9% in the first quarter from a year earlier to 18.3 million tonnes. LNG is seen as crucial to ending Europe's reliance on Russian pipeline gas. Shell valued its Russian assets at $1 billion, including petrol stations, a lubricants plant, and dividends from its stake in Sakhalin-2 LNG. On Monday, the news from CDL Life reports that an inmate escaped from a litter detail in Ohio and led police on a chase in a stolen semi-truck. Bellefontaine Examiner reported that inmate Andrew Claybaugh escaped from a litter detail along State Route 47 by the Bellefontaine Municipal Airport and stole a nearby Peterbilt semi-truck owned by the Shelly Paving Company. Claybaugh took off in a Bobtail semi-truck east on SR 47, and the truck's owner was able to track it via GPS and relay its location to police. Deputies spotted the semi-truck in the 5700 block of Church Road in Champaign County and activated their lights and sirens to pull him over, but Claybaugh drove away. A Champaign County detective eventually threw spike strips and deflated a tire on a speeding semi, but the driver continued moving at about 60 mph, causing the rig to go off the right side of the road and into a yard. Deputies ordered the suspect to exit his vehicle at gunpoint and gained control of his left arm. The suspect refused to give up his right arm, so K9 Thor was released and engaged the suspect's right arm to allow deputies to gain control. Claybaugh is being charged with escaping and stealing a car. He was previously incarcerated for drug charges. According to a report released by House Democrats on Wednesday, the Top Trump Administration officials intervened to help a struggling trucking company receive a $700 million loan after officials at the Department of Defense recommended against it. The article on Forbes has outlined some of the most critical factors. Some of the key facts are:  • A recent report by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis shows that YRC Worldwide received 95% of the funds allocated through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act national security program.  • In a June 2020 report, it was revealed that President Trump had discussed the loan with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters President James Hoffa. The latter was lobbying on behalf of the company for the loan. The report suggests that Trump may have intervened to press for the $700 million national security loan to a South Korean shipbuilding company so that he could receive praise from a union leader before the presidential election. • Congress allocated $17 billion to help companies deemed critical to national security in the $2.2 trillion Covid-19 relief package passed in 2020. • According to the report, several Trump aides, including White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, played a “key” role in coordinating with Yellow during the early months of the influenza pandemic to secure funding for a loan. According to an article in  truckers topic, Derrick  Monet and his wife, Jenna, were driving on an Indiana  interstate in 2019 when  their Tesla Model 3 sedan  operating on Autopilot  crashed into a parked fire  truck. Derrick, then 25,  sustained spine, neck,  shoulder, rib and leg  fractures. Jenna, 23, died  at the hospital. A clampdown on Autopilot could tarnish Tesla’s reputation with consumers and spook investors whose belief in the company’s self-driving bona fides have helped make Tesla CEO Elon Musk the world’s wealthiest person. It could damage confidence in technology other auto and software companies are spending billions on to develop in hope of reversing a troubling trend of soaring U.S. traffic fatalities. According to a Gila Herald article, an Arizona DPS trooper arrested an 18-year-old Phoenix man in the Pinal County Jail on Friday after leading Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers on a fatal pursuit that ended with the death of three people. After release from a Tucson-area hospital where he received medical treatment for injuries suffered in a car crash, 18-year-old Kevin Avila was taken into custody. He was booked into jail on three counts of homicide, seven counts of endangerment, and seven aggravated assaults. Investigators suspected Avila might be involved in human smuggling when he failed to yield to a DPS trooper while westbound on Thursday in a Toyota SUV RAV4. According to a news release from the DPS, a Department of Public Safety trooper attempted to stop a reckless driver in an SUV on Interstate 10. Avila failed to yield and rolled over, colliding with an Amazon delivery tractor-trailer. A box truck was also damaged when the SUV crashed into its side. The DPS said that nine people were in the SUV, which is made to seat five. Two died at the scene; one later died in a hospital, and five were airlifted to hospitals in Phoenix and Tucson. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) confirmed in a statement on Thursday that the incident did involve an attempt to smuggle individuals.
