In the 1950s, the NPS investigated the possibility of applying a clear plastic coating to the arch to protect it from further erosion and eventual destruction. The idea was ultimately abandoned as impractical and contrary to NPS principles.

The Mouth of the Columbia River.

The Columbia empties into the Pacific Ocean just west of Astoria, Oregon, over the Columbia Bar, a shifting sandbar that makes the river's mouth one of the most hazardous stretches of water to navigate in the world.

The Ahwahnechee lived in Ahwahne, known to many as Yosemite Valley, for as long as 7,000 years. The US federal government has evicted Yosemite Native people from the park in 1851, 1906, 1929, and 1969.

Some of the rocks exposed in the park date to over one billion years in age. Rocks within the park were folded, faulted, distorted, and metamorphosed during the late Paleozoic Alleghanian orogeny (325 to 260 million years ago).
