Mr. Satoshi Naito – a member of Pipe Club of Western Tokyo, Champion of 14th  World Pipe Smoking Championship in 2018

Ms. Yo Uekusa – Executive Director of the Pipe Club of Japan, a member of John Silver Pipe Club, Lady’s Champion of 14th  World Pipe Smoking Championship in 2018.

  Yo: Thank you so much for coming today. First of all, congratulations, Mr. Tsuge…for being installed as a Vice President of CIPC.

 Sab: Thank you. To tell the truth, I thought “Oh, my goodness”. Because for the first time, I haven’t imagined to be… Just as a member of CIPC was enough for me. However Mr. Suzuki, Ex-vice president of CIPC had told me to be. There was an selection at the day of the championship, I took 15 votes from 18. You know, I have responsibility.

 Yo: What kind of job do you have?

 Sab: I am a person in charge of Asia, the US and Australia I guess. You know, as a vice president, I have to take care of development of each pipe club and help to create new pipe club. Also, I am about to join main events of CIPC. In my opinion, some members of them are my company’s distributor, hence I think probably they have voted NOT TO ME but to TSUGE PIPE COMPANY ;-)

 Satoshi: That means Tsuge Pipe have become popular all over the world!

 Yo: Your name “Sab Tsuge” is world wide.

 Sab: I am also member of Pipe Academy so I have to research history of pipes more academic.

 Yo: Satoshi, congratulations ! You are the world champion of World Pipe Smoking Championship!

 Sab: Congratulations!

 Satoshi: Thank you so much. But I can’t believe it yet ;-) I felt like I did’t belong there because it was completely different from “normal pipe championship” such as Japan Pipe Smoking Championship or Pipe Smoking Championship in local. Because there were lots of people from all over the world. It was like a championship in oversea.

 Sab: How long is your average?

  Satoshi: It depends. By 2 years ago, in average, about 80 minutes however in last year, I had to face difficulties… sometimes only 30 minutes… it was so called slump. My best record was 117 minutes.

 Yo: Mmm. So in this championship, you got “new record”, did’t you?

 Satoshi: That’s true but I can’t believe it yet. *1st record=147 minutes and 5 seconds.

 Sab: Oh, my goodness!

 Yo: what did you feel like… to be “a last person”?

 Satoshi: I concentrated to smoke so I did not look around.

 Yo: When were your aware of being a champion?

 Satoshi: I guess when 2 guys left (including me) I begun to think “It might be…?”. I did’t pay attention to be when 10 person were smoking.

 Sab: Did you finish a bowl or not?

 Satoshi: I finished the bowl. At that time, I wanted to burn all of tobacco in the bowl. That’s why I had concentrated to…

 Yo: Do you practice well?

 Satishi: I used to. But It takes so long time and….right now I have a passion to make pipes.

 Sab: You know, it is first time to see a young guy become a winner. I am so happy. Because it means pipe smoking convey to next generation to generation. So it might be a good influence for beginners.

 Yo: I thought the winner would be a “veteran”, so I thought it was a moment that a new star was born. More over, his new record. For me so much fantastic result.

 Sab: Did you face a difficulties during smoking the bowl?

 Satoshi: Yes. I smoked with small hot spot so I felt ,at that time, it would be almost gone however soon I realized fluid situation.

 Sab: I would like to know how to recover when you were facing difficulties. Do you have a “supecial technic ?”

 Satoshi: I think the most important thing is to do tamper work and draw well.

 Sab: It’s so much difficult to control hot spot. If it gets smaller, easy to go out. On the other hand, if it gets bigger, I can’t smoke long time.

 Yo: That’s why the contest is so much fun.

 Sab: How was it, Yo? Did you face difficulties such like that?

 Yo: No, I did’t. Tobacco burned well. I did not think of being champion and ,more over, I am a executive director of the Pipe Club of Japan so I had to take care of smokers from all over the countries. But this time, I had decided to do my best for craft man and designer of pipe box.

 Sab: So both of you, didn’t think of being a champion for the first time.

Satoshi and Yo: That’s collect.

 Sab: I think you just concentrated to smoke as my impression.

 Satoshi: I found one thing during the contest under the circumstances where I felt like I was alone. I did concentrate to smoke, that’s why I had realize but…. Its taste was changed when tobacco got ash then new leaves burned. Probably I can’t do same thing again.

Yo: It would be presumptuous of me to say but we, me and Satoshi, have to do “defensive battle”, don’t we? Challengers may think “ take over Satoshi” or “get Yo down”. I haven’t imagined such like that before…

 Satoshi: It’s OK, I will get down next championship J But I’am happy to be a person who is wanted to be ;-) However I still can’t believe I became a champion. That’s why I worry about myself. Only thing I can do is do my best though ;-)

 Sab: By the way, how was a championship pipe?

 Satoshi: This pipe looks so much wonderful because its shank is bit bigger but still has a good balance. It’s little heavy so I need to hold its bowl by my hand. The ring made from brass is fantastic! So much cool.

 Sab: One of Japanese culture so called “Mitate”. It means that use a material to express other thing. This ring of pipe is made from brass to present knuckle of bamboo. To through this pipe we wanted to show the world, culture of “Mitate”.

 Yo: This ring is antique finish.

 Sab: For the first time, I thought that pipe was heavy however its design had add value and I like it.

 Yo: I normally hold a bowl while smoking pipe so It did’t bother me. It is important to hold a bowl to check temperature.

 Sab: Did you care about temperature of the bowl?

Yo: Not so. Bowl is thick so it’s not necessary to care too much.

 Sab: I think there is nothing to worry about burn off a bowl.

 Satoshi: It has good thickness I think. During the championship, I felt temperature of tobacco gently through this pipe and I thought it had great balance.

 Yo: This pipe is so much fashionable! It’s so much cool if you smoke in a bar.

 Satoshi: I think so, too. This pipe is different from championship pipes before.

Yo: I had a chance to see this pipe before the championship because I am one of the excutive director. A meeting to chose pipes for the contest, there was a vote. Result is this antique finish pipe was most popular.

 Satoshi: Were any reaction from people from over seas?

 Yo: They said “This pipe was easy to smoke till the end.” The Pipe Smoke of Japan had sold pipes at the show and soon sold out.

 Sab: It’s so much hard work to produce again. We have to gather each raw material. For this championship, we had produced more than 300 pipes however we don’t have plenty of materials compared with before. To create billiard pipe, it is necessary to use “ebauchon”, pre-cutted briar, from suppler. For them, it’s so much hard work to produce same size of “ebausion”.

Satoshi: This pipe has cross-grain. I love it. Is it going to be “regular product” in your catalog?

 Sab: I don’t think so. It is so much difficult. A pipe on a top of a trophy is a Ikebana made by Fukuda. This idea came from Hiro’s mind and he said he wanted to create trophy TO USE, not only display.

Yo: I thought that a medal is enough to put in a suit case ;-) ‘cause members of Pipe Club of Japan thought champion would be a person from over sea. However they come from so much far. Just a medal was too normal. And ….Hiro told me that we had to create special one…Tsuge had decided to produce “Makie” pipe for a lady’s champion ‘cause “Makie” is one of great Japanese culture.

 Sab: This championship was amazing for me. Till last time, often person from Europa won. This time, we , Japan got 3 champions. Personal champion, lady’s champion and team champion.

 Naito: We should have to do “Omotenashi” however result was opposite ;-)….

 Sab: Satoshi, do you have a message for young smokers like you?

 Satoshi: ummm… I don’t care about generation but you know, pipe smoking is not only delicious but also beautiful. Each pipe has wonderful shape. Plus, it has long and deep history. It is so fun to research. Why don’t you try to smoke a pipe?

 Sab: That’s what I thought about when I was young. One day, I found pipe had beauty.

 Satoshi: For young smokers, it’s difficult to get an opportunity to touch and smoke pipe. That’s why it’s important to step forward to make a friends with different generation or community.

 Sab: Yes, that’s true, ‘cause I have many friends all over the world through pipe smoking. There are lots of kinds of people in a pipe smoking community.

 Yo: That’s right, pipe smoking community is one of the great point in my life. I, as an executive director of Pipe Club of Japan, would like to lead “next generation”. Probably it is rude to say but gap to start smoking pipe got shorter because a young guy ,Satoshi, won a championship.

 Satoshi: I think so. I think anyone has a chance to be a winner.

 Sab: Please do not say that because you became champion only few months ago.

 Yo: We are champions for 4 years so I would like to do my best for young generation. Well, that just about wraps it up for today. Satoshi and Sab, Thank you so much.

植草：本日、ここにお集りいただいた方々は、2018年おめでとうと言われてもおかしくない方々ばかりですが、まず、柘社長、国際パイプクラブ委員会の副会長に就任されました。おめでとうございます。

柘：ありがとうございます。いやー、参っちゃったよ。最初、今まで副会長に就任していた鈴木達也さんから話をもらったんだけど、僕は委員会に入ればいいと思ってたんだよね。蓋を開けたら、鈴木さんの役職の副会長まで引き継いでくれってことでさ。大会当日、選挙まで行われて、全18票のうちの15票を獲得して、無事に選任されました。重責を担うことになっちゃった。

植草：具体的にはどんなお仕事が待ってるんでしょうか？

柘：担当はアジアとアメリカ、オーストラリアかな。何しろ、パイプクラブの発展や、新しいクラブを作ることに協力する組織の副会長だからね。あとは、主な行事に出席することになっております。ただね、委員の中には、ウチ（柘製作所）の代理店の人もいたからさ、きっと、僕という個人じゃなく、柘製作所のパイプに投票してくれたんじゃないかなと思っています（笑）

内藤：ツゲの製品が世界に受け入れられているってことですよね。

植草：サブ・ツゲの名前はもはやワールドワイドですもんね。

柘：パイプ学会にも入ってるからさ、たぶん、これから、もっと学術的な研究も期待されてるんじゃないかな。

植草：それから、内藤さん、世界チャンピオンおめでとうございます！

柘：おめでとうございます！

内藤：ありがとうございます。でも、まだ実感がありません（笑）(世界大会は)日本でやっているのに、アウェイな感じで…。今まで全日本大会や関東大会に参加してましたけど、違った��囲気があって…。海外の方がいらして、全然違う大会のように感じました。

柘：いつもの平均タイムはどのくらいなの？

内藤：バラつきがあるんです。2年前くらいは安定してい��80分くらいを平均で出せていました。2018年は落ち込んでました（笑）30分で消えてしまったりしていたので、スランプに陥っていた時期ではありました。自己ベストは117分くらいですかね…。

植草：ってことは、本番で飛躍的にタイムを伸ばしたってことですよね？

内藤：そうなりますね。※世界大会優勝タイム　2時間27分5秒・147分5秒

柘：うわー！信じられない！

植草：最後に１人残るってどういう気分なんですか？

内藤：周りは見ないようにしてますね。吸うほうに集中してました。

植草：優勝を意識したのはどのへん？

内藤：最後の2人になった時ですかね。10人くらい残っている時は、全然優勝なんて思ってもみませんでした。でも、2人になった時は「これは、もしかしたら」と思い始めました。

柘：吸い切りだったの？それとも、まだたばこが残ってたの？

内藤：吸い切りでした。あの時の目標は「全て燃やすこと」だったんです。その目標に向けて、粛々と吸ったというか…。

植草：普段からキチンと練習するタイプ？

内藤：昔は練習していました。でも、どうしても長くなるし…。今は吸うことに情熱かけるよりも、作るほうが楽しいので、そちらに時間をかけています。

（※現在はパイプ作家としても活動中）

柘：でもね、今まで、ずっとベテランの人が優勝してきたでしょう？こういう若い人がチャンピオンになるって初めてだから、我々としても、嬉しいよ。まず、若い人がパイプを吸ってるってのも嬉しいし、これから始める人にもいい刺激になる。

植草：私も、大会前までは、上位はいつものメンバーだろうな、と思っていたんですが、まさにスター誕生の瞬間でした。しかも、自己ベストで、素晴らしい結果だったと思います。

柘：途中で、まずいな、って思った瞬間ってあった？

内藤：ありましたね。やはり火を絞っているので、消えそうだなと感じた瞬間はありました。ただ、そういう変化にいち早く気づく事が出来たことも、今回の勝因のひとつだと思います。

柘：そういう時ってどうやって切り抜けたの？タンパーワークとかドローとか、そういうテクニックってあるわけ？

内藤：そうですね、タンパーワークとドロー、その２つに尽きると思います。それが、危機を脱するということに繋がっているだけでなく、危機に陥りにくくする、ということにも寄与していると思います。

柘：難しいよね、火種を絞ると、ぱっと消えちゃうことがあるしね、かといって火種を絞らないと長く吸えないし…。

植草：その辺が競技の醍醐味と言えば、醍醐味ですもんね。

柘：���さんはどうだったの？まずいなって瞬間はあったの？

植草：私は無かったんですよ（笑）というか、まさか優勝するとは思ってないし、常任理事の立場で勝つというのもねぇ…。おもてなしをする立場ですから。でも、今回は、パイプを作ってくれた人たち、パイプの箱を作ってくれた人たちの顔が浮かんで、行けるところまで行こう！って思ったんです。

柘：２人の話を聞くとさ、最初から勝とうと思ってなかったってことだよね。

内藤・植草：思ってないですねー。

柘：ただ、淡々と吸って、って印象があるよね。

内藤：今回、分かったのは、灰になった時の味と、新しいたばこに火が着いた時の味が違うな、ってことです。アウェイな環境で、すごく集中していましたから、気づけたのかもしれません。リラックスしていて、でも、集中していて…。次、同じことが再現できるかというと、出来ない気がする（笑）

植草：でも、私はおこがましいですが、お互い、追われる立場になるわけでしょう？大会のたびに、内藤さんを倒そう、とか、植草を倒そうとか言う人が出てくるわけじゃないですか。そういうのって考えたこともなかったから…。

内藤：大丈夫。僕はすぐ倒されます（笑）でも、そういった目標にしていただけるのであれば、そういう役割になりたいな、とは思います。ただ、この結果にまだ実���が伴っていないので、本当にその役割を果たせるのかは心配です。がんばろうかな、という意気込みはありますけど（笑）

柘：ところで、大会パイプはどうだった？

内藤：今回の大会パイプは、割とシャンクの部分から太めに作ってあって、どっしりとしていい形だなと思ってます。重みがあるので、手を添える必要がありますね。（手を添えないで）咥えているだけだと顎に負担がかかるかな、とは若干思います。とはいえ、それを差し置いても、この錫のリングは非常にカッコいい。

柘：いわゆる「見立て」「やつす」ということなんだよね。「武士が町人に身をやつす」ってあるじゃない。例え、身をやつしても、品っていうのはにじみ出ちゃうんだよね。ウチのこのパイプはそういう意味でいうと、見立ての世界を表現したんだよね、竹の節を出してね。

植草：古美加工してあるんですよね。

柘：僕もさ、最初は重いかな、と思ったんだけどさ、その重さより、デザインだとかさ、付加価値がそういう部分にあるから、いいと思うんだよね。

植草：私は普段からボウルを持って吸う癖がありますから、気になりませんでしたね。ボウルの温度を確かめながら吸うって意味もありますし。

柘：今回はそういう温度のことは気にならなかった？

植草：これだけ肉厚に出来てますから、神経質にならなくてすみますよね。見た目の重厚さからも分かりますしね。

柘：このパイプが焦げるってことはほとんど無いと思うんだよね。

内藤：いい肉厚だと思います。世界大会で使ってみて、この肉厚でも、ほんのり温度が伝わってきて、火種のことは特に問題なく分かったので。非常にバランスがいいと思います。

植草：大会パイプとして、ファッショナブルで、大会だけではなく、バーなんかで吸っても、かっこいいと思います。

内藤：そうですね、今までとはちょっと違いますよね。

植草：私は常任理事という立場上、競技者の皆さんより先にこのパイプを見られるんです。柘製作所より、何パターンか候補のパイプを見せてもらって、理事会の投票により大会パイプが決まるんですが、この銀色の古美加工がダントツでした。

内藤：海外の方からの反響はどうだったんですか？

植草：私が聞いたのは「どう吸っても、吸い切りしやすいね」って。あと、感想を聞くまでもなく、連盟が販売する分があっと言う間に売り切れました。

柘：また、最初から作るのは大変なんだよ。材料から揃えなきゃいけないし。今回は300本以上作ったわけだけど、昔ほど材料が豊富なわけじゃない。ビリヤードを作るには「エボーション」という、カットされているブライヤーを買わなきゃいけない。サプライヤーも、同じサイズのものを切り出すのは大変。

内藤：木目も、クロスグレインのものを使ってます。ストレートに出るのではなく、クロスのほうに揃えてるんですよね。商品化はしないんですか？

柘：それは出来ないんじゃないかな。そっちのトロフィーのパイプは、ウチの福田が作ったイケバナがのってるんだよ。発案者はウチの専務（三井氏）。「もらって飾るトロフィーより、使えるトロフィーにしたかった」ということだったんだよね。

植草：私個人的には、「メダルでいいでしょ。そのほうがスーツケースに入るし」って言ってたんです（笑）理事会的には、上位は当然海外勢だと思ってましたから（笑）でも、せっかく日本まで来て、勝って、それでメダルだけじゃつまらないだろう、って話になって…。そしたら、専務の三井さんが「なら、やっちゃおうよ！」って言ってくださって…。レディースチャンピオンの商品も日本らしい「蒔絵」シリーズを、ということで決まりました。

柘：今回の大会は、本当にすごかったよね。今までは、ずっと海外勢が優勝してたからね。日本が個人の優勝、レディースの優勝、団体優勝まで持って来ちゃうんだから、感慨深いよね。

内藤：おもてなしするどころか、完膚なきまでに…（笑）

柘：若きチャンピオンから同世代に向けて、なにか一言欲しいな。

内藤：そうですね、世代は関係なくですが、パイプは吸って美味しいですし、鑑賞して楽しむという側面もあります。また、歴史もあり、調べていくと色々分かって、すごく奥深い。ぜひ、触れてみるのがいいかと思います。

柘：僕が若い頃考えていたことと同じだな！ある日、パイプって美しいな、ってのが分かったんだよね。

内藤：若い人になればなるほど、パイプに触れること、パイプを吸って���る人に出会う機会が減ってくると思うんですよね。そういったことに触れようとした時、一歩足を踏み出してみる、自分が接している世代とは違う世代の人とつきあうだとか、別のコミュニティの人とつきあうだとか、そういうことを大切にして、と思うんですよね。

柘：そうそう！本当にそうだよ。僕が色んな人と知り合えたのも、パイプのおかげだよ。普段、話出来ない人とも知り合いになってね。僕の人生において、すごく大きい。

植草：そうですね。これからは、私も、常任理事として、下の世代を仲間に引き入れたいですね。そういう意味で内藤さんが優勝してくださって、パイプスモーキングのハードルが下がったのではないかと思うんです。失礼かもしれないけど…。

内藤：そうですね。ぱっと出てきて、またぱっと出てきた人に負けると、実は誰にでもチャンスがあるって思いますよね（笑）

柘：まだまだ言っちゃいけないよ、チャンピオンになったばっかりなのに（笑）

植草：あと4年間はタイトルホルダーなわけですから、後世に伝わるようにがんばって行きたいですね。

日本食とパイプたばこに関する考察

その4：日本酒とキャベンディッシュ

日本酒はお米から作られる。詳しい製造法はここでは取り上げないが、要はお米に含まれるデンプンが糖化し、それがアルコールに変化したものである。お米が有名な地域は米所と呼ばれるが、同時に日本酒が特産品であることが多い。特に、新潟の越乃寒梅は今や日本だけではなく海外でも有名で羽田空港国際線の免税店でも売られている位だ。今回、「日本酒とキャベンディッシュ」というテーマにしたのは両者に類似点があると感じたからだ。尚、今回のテーマのキャベンディッシュは甘い香料などが加えられてい���いタイプ(海外ではEnglish styleやpureなどと呼ばれる)のもので考えてみる。

あくまで個人的考えであるが、日本酒はそのお米の魅力を最大限に活かした結果である。特に甘口のものがそうであるが、口に含んだ瞬間に優しい甘さが口腔内に広がる。その世界観は大昔から人々を魅了させてきた。私もその世界観に夢中になった一人で、お陰で大学に５年も通った(笑)また、日本酒は料理との相性もよく、煮る、焼く、揚げる、蒸す…どのような料理にも合う。

キャベンディッシュの名前の由来は、諸説あるが、とある船の船長の名前から来ている。昔、アメリカからイギリスへたばこを運ぶ時には船を利用していた。あるとき、キャベンディッシュ船長は輸送コストを節約するために、使用済みのラムの樽にたばこを大量に詰め込んで運ぶことにした。するとどうだろう？ご存知の通り船便は時間がかかる。長い航海の間にたばこは熟成され、奥深さのある甘いたばこに変化した。上記のとおりキャベンディッシュは結果的に偶然が生んだ産物であるが、その葉がもつ甘味を最大限いかしている点では日本酒と似ている。

写真に写っているたばこは、ドイツのたばこメーカー、コールハスが製造しているブラックバージニア。ブレンド内容は、バージニアとブラックキャベンディッシュ。缶を開けると、ドライフルーツを連想させる香りが広がる。着火をするとすぐに感じるのは、奥深い甘さ。これはバージニアが熟成された結果であろう。香喫味が安定しており、充分にこの「オトナの吸ぃーツ」を愉しむことが出来る。

Chapter4: Sake and Cavendish

Japanese Sake is made from rice. I would not like to explain more detail in this time however, in short, starch of rice saccharified then converts into alcohol. In Japan, there are lots of region where is famous for rice. They are also famous for sake. Especially “Koshinokambai” from Nigata is popular not only in Japan but also overseas. That’s why you can buy them at duty free shop in Haneda International Airport. In this article, I would like to focus on sake and cavendish(type of non-flavour, so called English style or pure) because both are so similar.

In my opinion, sake is a result of maximized its charm point. Especially sweet one, its sweetness gently spread in a mouth. That’s why people have been attracted since long long time ago. I am one of them hence I had to go to university for 5 years ;-) Sake is a good combination with any food, simmered, baked, fried, steamed…..My thought, “tempra green pepper and white fish” and “teriyaki of yellowtail” are the best.

Where the name of cavendish came from? There are some theories but reliable theory is that it came from the captain’s name of a ship. Long time ago, they used to ship tobacco from America to England by ship. One day, captain Cavendish had decided to carry virginia tobacco by used-barrel of rum to save money. You know, shipment by ship takes so much time. That’s why fermentation got well. It was coincidence however it was a result of maximized  virginia leaves’ charm point. Hence, sake and cavendish are so similar each other.

Pipe tobacco in this picture is called Black Virginia from Rattray. It is blend of virginia and black cavendish. Tin note is like a raisin of some dry fruits. Lighting up a bowl, soon realize its sweetness is deep, thanks to a great fermentation. Its taste and flavour are stable hence you can enjoy this “sweets of adults”.

Capítulo 4:Sake y Cavendish

Bebida sake está hecho de arroz. No voy a explicar más información pero, en breve, almidón de arroz sacarificado entonces cambia a alcohol. En Japón, hay muchas regiones muy famosa de arroz. Estos también son famosa de sake. Especialmente, “Koshinokambai” de Niigata es muy popular no solo en Japón pero también todo el mundo. Así puede comprar esto en la tienda en aeropuerto Haneda. En este artículo, voy a escribir relación entre sake y cavendish(tipo de non-flavour, se llama English style o pure) porque son muy similar.

En mi opinión, sake es resultado maximizado su punto de encanto. Cuando tomo sake dulce, puedo sentir dulzura suavemente en mi boca. Así a nosotros japoneses nos gusta sake muchísimo desde hace mucho tiempo. Me encanta sake así era estudiante de la universidad por 5 años (normalmente 4 años). Sake está muy buena con comidas todos. Especialmente, me gusta “Tempra” y “Teriyaki”.

¿De donde la palabra Cavendish se deriva? Hay algunos teorías pero voy a explicar una teoría segura. Hace mucho tiempo, tenían transporte barco para tabacos de América a Inglaterra. una día, capitán Cavendish decidió transportar tabaco de virginia usando barril de ron para ahorrar dinero. El transporte en barco lleva tanto tiempo. Por eso, fermentación de tabaco de virginia en barril estaba muy buena. Es coincidencia pero es resultado maximizado su punto de encanto. Por lo tanto, Sake y Cavendish son muy similar.

Tabaco de la pipa en la foto se llama Black Virginia de Rattray. Es blend de virginia y black cavendish. Su aroma de lata significa uva pasa or frutas secas. Cuando encenderlo, puede reconocer su dulzura está profundo porque su fermentación. Su sabor y aroma están estable entonces puede disfrutar “dulce por adultos”.

We had visited Kiseru Festival at Kabasan Shrine in Ibaraki prefecture. Visitado Kiseru Fiesta en Santuario Kabasan en Ibaraki.　加波山神社の煙管祭りに参加致しました。

In 2nd Sep, We had visited Kabasan-shrine located in Ishioka City, Ibaraki prefecture. “Kiseru Festival” is held at beginning of September every year.

En 2 septiembre, visitamos Santuario Kabasan en ciudad Ishioka en Ibaraki. Hay “Kiseru Fiesta” en  principios de septiembre cada años.

9月2日日曜日、茨城県石岡市に鎮座する加波山神社を訪れました。毎年9月の第一日曜日に「煙管祭り」が開催されます。

This festival has more than 60 years history. In 1953, hail damage had occur around tobacco farmers in local in spring. Hence, they had decided to pray for great harvest at Kabasan Shrine. Since then, Tobacco leaves had recovered. In 1954, they dedicated a giant kiseru for the shrine.

Esta fiesta tiene 60 años historia. En 1953 había herida de granizo. Ellos decidieron orar buena cosecha de tabaco a Santuario Kabasan. Desde entonces, tabaco se recuperaron. En 1954, dedicaron una kiseru gigante a eso santuario.

この祭りは60年以上歴史があります。 1953年、東茨城郡内原町（現在の水戸市内原町）で、春先に葉たばこに雹害があり、たばこ耕作者が 五穀豊穣を祈願したところ、たばこ葉は回復し豊作となりました。その翌年、大きな煙管を奉納したことがこの祭りの始まりです。

This giant kiseru is around 2.6 meters and 60 kilograms. Tobacco is named “Koiki” which is blended only traditional domestic tobacco leaves.

Esta kiseru gigante tiene 2.6 metros y 60 kilos. Tabaco se llama “Koiki” que tiene su blend de solo tabaco tradicional y domestico.

この祭りで使用する煙管は全長2.6メートル、重さが60キロあります。使用する刻みたばこは小粋。在来種の葉を使用した刻みたばこです。

The way to Honden(main shrine) is so hard. It is located on a top of Kabasan mountain. However smoking giant kiseru is so much wonderful. A mysterious thing happens every year. It is always rain during the event whenever we visit main shrine with the kiseru, weather changes, raining is stop. In my opinion, there is a god of tobacco and he always takes care of us.

Es muy complicado el camino a Honden(santuario principal). Está en la cima de la montaña Kabasan. Pero fumar kiseru gigante es muy fantastico. Es lluvia cada años cuando empeza la fiesta. Pero cuando visitamos santuario princopal, la lluvia se detiene siempre. Yo creo que el Dios de tabaco siempre nos cuida.

煙管を担いで本殿まで行く道のりはかなりきついですが、本殿での一服は格別なものです。一服をしながらたばこの豊作を祈願します。毎年の事ですが、天気が雨にもかかわらず、大きな煙管を持って本殿へ上ると雨が止んでしまうのです。どうやらたばこの神様は私たちのことをちゃんと見てくださっているようですね。

We have visited Paris. C’est la vie ;-)

先週、フランスのパリへ行ってきました。今回の目的は弊社パイプを取り扱ってくださっている小売店様へ御礼を申し上げること。ユーロスターが満席でチケットが取れなかったり空港への地下鉄がストライキで運休だったりとトラブル続きでしたが、貴重な体験をしました。

Last week, we visited Paris in France. Purpose is to visit shops and say “thak you so much for selling our pipe to customers in Paris.” This trip is too hard because Euro star was full and we had to ride on other train. More over underground to airport was down due to strike, however this trip is so much amazing experience for me.

Semana pasada, visitamos Paris en Francia. Visitamos tiendas y dicimos que “muchas gracias por introducir nuestras pipas a fumadores en Paris”. Este viaje es muy difícil porque no podemos tomar Eurostar y subterraneo a aeropuerto está cancelación porque STRIKE. Pero pienso que Este viaje es muy fantastico.

合わせて、3店訪れましたがそのうちPipe du Nordと言うお店をご紹介いたします。このお店は、パリ北駅から徒歩で約15分ほどの距離。パリ北駅から5号線で Jacques Bonsergentと言う駅で降りると徒歩1分ほどなので便利。弊社80周年記念パイプも一番いい所に飾って下さっています。ありがたい話です。

We visited 3 shop but I would like to introduce Pipe du Nord. This shop is located in 15 minutes walk from Gare du Nord. From the  Jacques Bonsergent station metro 5 line from Gare du Nord, only 1 minutes walk. They have our 80th anniversary pipe! So much thankful. 

Visitamos 3 tiendas pero voy a introducir la tienda se llama Pipe du Nord. 15 minutos de Pipe du Nord para andando, o solo 1 minuto de estación  Jacques Bonsergent, metro 5 de Gare du Nord solo 2 estación. Hay nuestra pipa de 80 aniversario. Muy agradecido.

2階にはなんとラウンジがありました。個人用のロッカー完備、お酒を飲みながらゆったりと喫煙できるスペースだそうです。広めの作りなので何かイベントをしたら楽しそうだと感じました。

In 1st floor, there is a lounge for pipe smokers. Personal lockers are there. you can smoke pipes and drink whiskey. so much wide space so it will so much fun if event is held.

En primero piso, hay lounge por fumadores de pipas. locker de persona... Puedes disfrutar pipas y bebidas. Es muy grade asi pienso que muy fantastico si hay Eventos.

先週、イギリスの老舗たばこメーカー、サミュエルガーウィズを訪問しました。

We visited Samuel Gawith in Kendal last week.

特別に、ロープたばこの製造の様子を見せてくれました。たばこは、葉巻のようにフィラーとラッパーに分かれているようでそれを回しながら製造するようです。

We have visited The White Spot.

先週、イギリスロンドンにあるホワイトスポットを訪問致しました。

今回は、パイプの仕入れが目的でしたが、貴重な資料を見せてもらいました。写真のものは、有名な画家であるパブロ・ピカソが使用していたダンヒルライター。

We visited for  stocking White Spot pipes and watched wonderful archives. This picture shows a lighter used by a famous painter, Pablo Picasso.

これは、1920年代のカタログでシガレットのマイミクスチャーのためのさや紙のサイズを示している。ちなみにこれらのほかにも色つきのさや紙などもあった。

This catalogue is around 1920s. it shows cigarette tubes for my mixture cigarette. Also, there were coloured tubes.

“Golden week” has begun.

Golden week has begun in this week. It depends on each company but in maximum, there are 9 holidays. Some people go abroad with their family, other people go shopping or amusement park.

Este semana se llama Golden Week en Japón. Es depende pero en máximo, tiene 9 holidays. Los van a otro países para descansar. Otros disfrutan comprar o ir a parque de atracciones.

今週いよいよゴールデンウィークが始まりましたね。会社にもよりますが、最大で9日間休みです。海外へ旅行するかたもいらっしゃれば、ショッピングを楽しんだり遊園地へいかれるかたもいらっしゃると思います。

Was Blue Note named after Jazz music? ブルーノートの名前の由来は本当にジャズからなのか？

パイプの世界においてブルーノートは最も最も知名度の高いたばこと言える。トロピカルフルーツにバニラというキャラクターのはっきりとした香喫味が多くのパイプスモーカーたちを魅了させている。ところで、よくこの名前の由来はジャズのコードから来ていると言われているが果たして本当にそうなのか。好奇心がわいたので調べてみた次第である。

　結論を申し上げれば、実は違う。パイプたばこというのは実に面白い。ひとひねりもふたひねりもする。ブルーノートの缶のパッケージを見てほしい。大きな文字で“Blue Note”と書いており、そのバックには楽譜と歌詞が書いてある。ぱっとパッケージを見るだけだと、「あぁ、ジャズのコードが名前の由来なんだ」とつい考えてしまう。しかし、よく歌詞を読んでみると“Walk right in, sit right down. Dad-dy, let your mind roll on…”とある。これは、“Walk Right In” の歌詞の一部で、1929年にGuss Cannonというブルースシンガーが作詞作曲した歌である。1962年に、フォークソンググループのザ・ルーフトップ・シンガーズがアップテンポなバージョンで12弦ギターを使用してカバーしたことがきっかけで、世界的に有名となった曲。因みに弊社社長である柘恭三郎が好きな曲のひとつ。一方楽譜をよく見ると、シの♭、ミの♭が確認できる。これは、ブルースやジャズによくみられるもので、「ブルーノートスケール」と呼ばれる。

　要するに、ブルーノートの商品名の由来はブルースでよく使われる「ブルーノートスケール」からとられている。それを示すために”Walk Right In”の楽譜と歌詞をパッケージデザインの一部に採用している。

※あくまで個人的な考えです。参考程度にお考えくだされば幸いです。

　

　

For all of pipe smokers, Blue Note is one of the most famous product in our world. It has a wonderful character of tropical fruits with vanilla, that’s why lots of pipe smokers love it. By the way, where does this name come from? Someone often says that it named after Jazz music. Is it true? I am interested in that so I decided to research about them.

In my opinion, Blue Note was not named after Jazz music. Pipe tobacco is so much funny. It is very complicated. Take a look at package design of the tin. There are words “Blue Note” and also score and lyrics on the back. It says “Walk right in, sit right down. Dad-dy, let your mind roll on…”. This lyrics is from “Walk Right In” produced by Guss Cannon, who was blues-singer, in 1929. A famous folk song group named “ The Rooftop Singers” covered and arranged high-tempo version with 12 strings guitar in 1962. Our president Sab loves this song. On the other hand, you can find that there are B sharp and E sharp in the score. it often use in Blues and Jazz music, so called “Blue Note Scale”.

    In conclusion, Blue Note is named after “Blue Note Scale” which is often used in Blues music. That’s why in package-design the score of “Walk Right In” and its lyrics.

In this year 2018, they decided to collaborate with Asami Kikuchi aka Ikebana pipe maker ;-) 4th Generation ha creado pipas colaboradas cada años.
