Week 12: Crowd-sourcing in Times of Crisis
hi guys, so glad to see you again! before we start the topic just imagine this: thousands of individuals, each contributing in their own way by donating funds, sharing vital information, and offering their skills and time. it’s the collective effort that truly moves mountains right? and that is what i'm gonna talk about this week—crowdsourcing!
Tumblr media
What is crowdsourcing?
In times of crisis, the power of the community shines brighter than ever. Whether it’s rallying support for those affected by natural disasters, or coming together to tackle global health emergencies, crowdsourcing plays a pivotal role in making a difference.
Crowdsourcing entails gathering work, information, or opinions from individuals who submit their contributions through the Internet, social media platforms, or smartphone apps. Crowdsourcing has become a popular approach to funding specific projects. Unlike traditional financing methods, crowdsourcing leverages the collective interest of a group, sidestepping traditional gatekeepers and intermediaries typically involved in raising capital. (Hargrave, 2022)
at this point, some of you may be confused, "isn't it the same as crowdfunding?" trust me. i was confused as well but! it's different!
Tumblr media
Crowdfunding involves gathering financial support for a project or initiative from a large audience through online platforms while crowdsourcing involves sourcing ideas, solutions, or services from a diverse group of individuals, typically facilitated through online communities. (Sparrow, 2024)
During the COVID-19 pandemic, crowdsourcing played an important role in medical supplies, community support, and research. The MIT COVID-19 Challenge adapted its healthcare hackathon to a virtual event instead of a physical event. This shift expanded its scope and audience far beyond what could have been achieved through traditional in-person gatherings, eliminating obstacles such as costs, time, and travel restrictions. Each event enlisted an average of 70 partners, including universities, hospitals, and many more health companies.
These themes covered a range of topics including the organization and management of COVID-19 testing and triage, educational initiatives, and resource allocation while others explored innovative healthcare delivery models, the distribution of medical supplies, and the well-being and training of healthcare workers. (Ramadi & Nguyen, 2021)
Tumblr media
Moreover, in response to the nationwide shortage of N95 masks, HP Inc. and their collaborators have sprung into action, using 3D printing technology to create face masks and shields that help protect our healthcare heroes during the COVID-19 crisis. They’ve delivered over 1,000 3D-printed parts to local hospitals near their 3D research and development centers. (McCue, 2020) let's give some credit to HP Inc. and their partners for stepping up to the plate!
What makes crowdsourcing so impactful? It’s not just about the resources pooled together, but the diverse ideas and perspectives that emerge. Expanding participation also invites diverse insights and speeds up the process. Whether it's urgent medical research or crucial software updates, tapping into a broader community can significantly boost project outcomes. (Livescault, 2024) From innovative solutions to heartwarming acts of solidarity, every contribution counts.
so here’s to using our collective power—supporting each other, lifting communities, and showing that when we unite, there’s no challenge we can’t face!!
and that's all from me :) this will be my last blog in the meantime, so if you read it up until here, you're a real one! thank you, xie xie, kamsahamida, arigato! >.< byebyeee

Week 11 : Digital Citizenship and Conflict: Social Media Governance
welcome back to my blog~! in today's digital age, we're more connected than ever, which comes with a ton of responsibility. hop on! let’s dive into what digital citizenship means and how social media governance plays a crucial role in shaping our online experiences!
Tumblr media
What is digital citizenship and how does it relate to social media governance?
As I had previously mentioned what is digital citizenship in my week 6 blog so i won't be yapping here again but in short, it basically means digital citizenship isn't just a buzzword—it's about how we use technology and social media platforms responsibly, ethically, and respectfully.
Social media governance is all about the rules and policies that guide how platforms operate and how we interact on them. The goal? To balance our freedom of expression with preventing harm like misinformation, hate speech, and cyberbullying. Do you see how they both relate?
Now, let's talk about something serious—online harassment.
Online harassment refers to the use of digital platforms like social media, email, forums, or messaging apps to spread insults, threats, cyberbullying, stalking, sexual abuse, and hate speech to someone. It can be through direct messages or comments on social media and it can significantly impact the victim's mental and emotional well-being and also lead to physical issues like heightened stress and anxiety. (Team, 2024)
That's how serious it is... I'm sure some of you may have seen it online yourselves but have you experienced it? Well, as a K-pop stan on Twitter, online harassment happens very often. Those "crimes" that can attract K-pop cyberbullies include criticizing a K-pop group or their label, making remarks that don’t show the group in the best light, or simply being a fan of a different group.
Tumblr media
Consider the case involving Juwon Park, an entertainment reporter based in Seoul. When she questioned the collaboration of a musician, accused of sexually assaulting two women (one of whom allegedly took her own life due to the abuse), on the latest BTS album, she was subjected to weeks of intense online harassment that continues even now. Numerous troll accounts initiated a campaign to flood her employer with emails filled with outrageous claims in an attempt to damage her reputation and get her fired. (Rashid, 2022)
Online harassment like this does not only happen to normal people but even to K-pop idols themselves. Recently, the K-pop girl group Lesserafim received a lot of harassment and hate for their Coachella performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many people criticized the group's live singing skills. International users on YouTube left comments such as "vocals, oh no" and "stop." On Instagram, posts showcasing their performance received feedback like "What happened to the vocals?" "Sorry, but their vocals were terrible," and "I love Le Sserafim but I think Coachella is too much for them." (Ka-young & Seo-young, 2024)
Though legal actions by their label have been announced against haters, and haters are getting their lives ruined, it still wasn't enough to stop the bullying.
Tumblr media
But what can we do to help it? As digital citizens, we all have a role in preventing online harassment. This includes treating others with respect and kindness online. We should also support victims by offering help and support to those experiencing harassment. It's important to report misconduct using the available tools on platforms to alert them about harassment. Additionally, promoting awareness by sharing information about online harassment and ways to overcome it is crucial.
together, we can make the internet and social media a safer, more welcoming place for everyone. let’s all do our part to create a positive digital community!
thank you, xie xie, kamsahamida, arigato! same time next week? haha byee╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

Week 10 : Gaming Communities, Social Gaming, and Live Streaming
hi guys! this week we will dive into the vibrant world of gaming communities, the joys of social gaming, and the thrill of live streaming. whether you're a casual gamer, a competitive pro, or just love watching others play, there's something here for everyone. let's get started! 🚀
Tumblr media
The Evolution of Games
Before the internet, smartphones, and cell phones became commonplace, and starting in the late 1970s, computer nerds at universities like MIT would sneak into the computer lab and learn how to do programming. Atari (founded by Nolan Bushnell) created the first basic video games, such as Pong, a table-tennis themed video game. (Teicholz, 2020) In addition to producing its own games, Atari founded a whole new industry centered around the "arcade," and soon, arcade games could be found in pubs, bowling alleys, and shopping centers all over the world. (Chikhani, 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Game cartridges eventually replaced Nolan Bushnell and Atari game systems, after Nintendo, including Donkey Kong and Mario, was developed in Japan.
Tumblr media
The advent of home consoles in the 1980s and 1990s, like Nintendo and Sega, brought gaming into living rooms worldwide. Suddenly, gaming was no longer confined to public spaces—it was an activity that could be enjoyed at home, alone, or with friends and family. This era saw the rise of iconic franchises such as Mario, Zelda, and Sonic, which have left an indelible mark on popular culture.
Gaming Communities: Where Friendships Level Up!
Gaming communities are the heart and soul of the gaming world. From massive online forums like Reddit, Steam, and Twitter to Discord servers, these spaces are where gamers connect, share tips, and enjoy their favorite games. Communities have an important role in bringing together people of all ages, nationalities, and cultural backgrounds, basically everyone all around the world! Games' virtual worlds erase barriers and offer easier ways for people to connect. (Games, 2023)
Social Gaming: Play Together, Stay Together
Gaming is no longer a solitary activity. Social gaming brings people together, no matter where they are in the world. Team up with friends to take on challenges and quests. It's not just about winning; it's about the journey together.
I think Stardew Valley is the right example for this!
Tumblr media
Stardew Valley produced by Eric Barone, is basically a game where you're a young person who quits your boring corporate career to start afresh on your grandfather's run-down farm. As days blend into days and seasons into seasons, Stardew Valley overwhelms the players' stimulus-reward system with an endless stream of short-term quests. The objective is, in a sense, anything you want it to be. (Singal, 2016)
Tumblr media
Back to the main point, there's no need to set up a server for multiplayer. Just invite your friends online through whatever platform you're on. When you're on the main menu, pick co-op to decide if you want to start a new farm or join your friend's farm. (Randell, 2021) Easy peasy right?
I co-op a farm with my cousins and since we live in different houses, we use discord to communicate! this is me btw hehe
Tumblr media
Live Streaming: The New Frontier of Entertainment
Live streaming has revolutionized the way we consume gaming content. Platforms like Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming offer endless entertainment and a chance to interact with your favorite streamers and for streamers to connect with their audience.
This setup lets people connect directly, making everything feel real and personal. Thanks to the internet, anyone can watch or stream live stuff, no matter where they are. It breaks down borders and gives us a huge variety of things to check out. (Carter, 2024)
It also gives content creators a cool new way to make money from their content. They can earn cash through ads, sponsorships, selling merch live, or even virtual tip jars. Here's an example for you!
But hey, let’s talk about something important: gaming isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes, they can get pretty messy. You know, all that toxic behavior and bullying? It’s like a dark cloud hanging over things. Competition, controversies, and the whole cloak of anonymity online can stir up some serious drama. We’ve got to make sure our gaming hangouts are safe and respectful places for everyone. That means standing up to toxicity and working together to build a positive vibe. After all, gaming should be about fun and connecting, not tearing each other down.
Gaming communities, social gaming, and live streaming have transformed gaming into a rich, social experience. So, get out there, join a community, play with friends, and maybe even start your own livestream! The world of gaming is more connected than ever, and it might be waiting for you.
that's all from me! as usual, meet you in my next blog? (о´∀`о) meanwhile, drop your favorite gaming communities or streamer recommendations, i would like to hear from you guys! thank you, xie xie, kamsahamida, arigato!

Week 9 : The Magic of Instagram Filters
hi~ welcome back to my blog! in this blog, i will be talking about Instagram filters, i'm pretty sure most of you use it quite often right?whether you're a hardcore filter user or a #nofilter person, there's no denying that these little digital enhancements have a massive impact on how we present our lives to the world. so let's dive into it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Role of Instagram Filters
Digital citizenship is about using technology ethically, safely, and responsibly, understanding our online impact, protecting privacy, respecting others, and being critical of the information we share. While software literacy involves understanding how digital tools work, beyond just using them, making us informed creators and responsible consumers.
Instagram filters are a perfect example of where digital citizenship and software literacy intersect. Augmented Reality (AR) plays a big role in Instagram Filters. All it takes to create a combined image with an Instagram Stories AR Filter is to overlay virtual computer-generated and/or video effects on top of an actual photograph. (Geyser, 2024) To make it easier to understand, basically, that's how Instagram filters are made!
psst.. did you know that the first social media platform whose primary product is an augmented reality filter is Snapchat. They called it Snapchat Lenses. Snapchat's AR is a little different from those on Instagram due to a few different features. (Annica, 2022)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
everyone used to be obsessed with using the dog filter on Snapchat in 2015, i'm sure you guys are familiar with it too hehe
Facebook launched Camera Effects, an augmented reality tool, a few hours after Snapchat launched World Lenses in April 2017. Camera Effects was eventually renamed Spark AR and expanded to include Instagram, which quickly became popular. (INDE, 2023)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, Instagram Filters have more options than Snapchat Lenses. Instagram filters have contributed to the rise of visual trends and digital aesthetics. Trends like the "90's film" or the "cottagecore" aesthetic often revolve around specific filter styles that create a unified look and feel. Moreover, with AR, besides filters that make you pretty or flawless, users can create filters that are funny and relatable as well. (these are my personal favs hahaha)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These filters can transform our photos in fun and creative ways, but there’s more to them than meets the eye:
Filters allow us to express ourselves creatively. However, they can also distort reality, creating unrealistic beauty standards. The development of unnatural beauty standards is one of the biggest issues with social media filters. We can make our lips bigger, our eyes brighter, and our skin smoother with a single tap on a screen. These filters would distort our ideals of beauty, making it hard to achieve in real life. Because of this, we could feel self-conscious about the way we look and feel unjustified pressure to adopt a particular appearance. (Sofya, 2023)
Cultural Sensitivity is also important as some filters borrow elements from different cultures. It’s important to use them respectfully and be aware of cultural appropriation. Understanding this helps us use filters to enhance creativity rather than perpetuate harmful stereotypes!
here are some tips that help in being a thoughtful digital citizen!
Stay Curious: explore how your favorite filters work and what data they access.
Be Mindful: consider the effects of altered images on your mental health and self-esteem.
Respect Others: use filters and share images responsibly, without distorting reality in harmful ways.
Learn Continuously: software literacy is an ongoing journey—keep learning and adapting!
To conclude, embracing digital citizenship and software literacy empowers us to navigate the digital world with confidence and integrity. By understanding the tools we use, like Instagram filters, we become more thoughtful and responsible digital citizens. Let’s continue to explore, create, and share in ways that uplift and respect our online community.
stay informed, stay critical, and always filter wisely! thank you, xie xie, kamsahamida, arigato! hope to meet you in my next blog! goodnight! ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡

Week 8 : Real Talk on Body Modification and Health
today, I want to dive into a topic that’s been on my mind since week 8's lecture —body modification and how it’s portrayed on visual social media. yup, we’re talking about tattoos, piercings, cosmetic surgery, and even some more extreme transformations that are all over our feeds. with the rise of platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, etc, we’re constantly bombarded with images of body modification that look super cool (or sometimes super scary and unreal).
The Digital Stage for Body Modification
Tumblr media
First off, let’s talk about why body modification is so appealing. It’s a form of self-expression, a way to tell the world who you are without saying a word. Whether it’s a delicate tattoo with personal meaning or a dramatic surgical change, body mods can be empowering. They can also be a statement, an art form, or just a fun way to change your look.
But here’s where it gets tricky—what we see online isn’t always the whole truth. Filters, Photoshop, and the perfect lighting can make anything look amazing. It’s easy to forget that there’s a real person behind those images, and sometimes, a lot of pain and maintenance too.
what ‘aesthetic templates’ are on social media
Aesthetic templates aren’t just about fashion or trends—they’re about shaping how we see ourselves and others. When celebrities and influencers promote specific looks or lifestyles, they can inadvertently reinforce narrow beauty ideals. This can lead to feelings of insecurity or the pressure to conform, which can affect our mental health.
Tumblr media
Korean singer, IU once mentioned on Happy Together 3 that her daily diet consisted of an apple, two sweet potatoes, and a protein shake. She did this to lose weight while filming a show and successfully shed 4 kilograms in 4 days.
Tumblr media
This sparked a viral trend known as the 500 Kcal diet, with numerous YouTube videos showcasing people attempting it (i remember trying this diet when i was 15 too). However, this diet trend has contributed to a rise in mental health issues among South Koreans. (Naher, 2022)
BUT! it’s not all negative. Public health campaigns and positive influencers/celebrities are starting to shift the narrative. They’re advocating for body positivity, diversity, and inclusivity. They remind us that beauty isn’t one-size-fits-all and that real life isn’t always filtered or perfectly staged.
For example, a Korean-American rapper, singer, and songwriter Jessi, celebrates body diversity and encourages self-love through her platforms. Jessi has also been quite transparent about her several plastic surgery procedures, most notably her breast augmentation, as well as the filler she had put in her lips and face. Jessi did, however, clarify that she had her fillers removed and now loves the way her body looks. She declared that she was now aware of her limitations and that she now encourages everyone to accept and cherish their bodies, regardless of whether they decide to get plastic surgery or not. (Kelly-Ouyang, 2020)
Tumblr media
Over 2.2 million people have viewed the YouTube video "Jessi's breast surgery confession." One of the hosts asks Jessi if she's ever been made fun of, and that's when she makes her "confession." She responds that people often talk about her behind her back but never in front of her.
Tumblr media
“For example, they would say, ‘You have fake boobs.’ OK, so what if they are fake? I paid for them.” said Jessi
Tumblr media
On the other hand, influencers like Jameela Jamil challenge these norms by advocating for body positivity and criticizing unrealistic beauty expectations. She once called Kim Kardashian West "toxic" for posting an advert promoting a dieting lollipop. Kim was promoting a product from a company that provides diet goods, such as lollipops, which decrease hunger. According to the company's website, lollipops are meant to be consumed during food cravings. (btw, the same company has had social media adverts banned in the UK) However, there is a disclaimer that reads, "The Food and Drug Administration has not evaluated these statements." (BBC, 2018)
you can read the full article here!
Microcelebrity culture plays a big role too. These influencers may seem larger than life, but they’re also human. They have their own struggles and insecurities, just like the rest of us. It’s important to remember that what we see online is often a carefully curated version of reality. Being a good digital citizen means being smart about how we consume and share content, especially when it comes to body modification. We need to question the reality of what we see, remembering that not everything online is real. Before considering a body mod, thorough research is crucial—look up reputable artists or doctors, check reviews, and understand the risks involved. Think about the long-term consequences, as many modifications are permanent or semi-permanent. It’s also important to respect others’ choices; just because a particular modification isn’t for you doesn’t mean it’s okay to judge someone else who has it. Finally, let’s not forget the importance of body positivity and acceptance. Social media can make it seem like everyone is perfect and constantly upgrading their looks, but the truth is, everyone has insecurities, (me too!) and that’s okay. Embrace who you are, whether you have modification or not. remember, everyone’s body is their own canvas! :) thank you, xie xie, kamsahamida, arigato! hope to see u in my next blog! >.< References:

Week 7 : The Slow Fashion Movement and the Role of Social Media Influencers: A Casual Dive
welcome back to my blog! let's talk about something that's been trending for all the right reasons – the slow fashion movement. you’ve probably seen your favorite influencers/artists posting about it, but what’s it really all about? i may not be a fashionista but i do know a thing or two hehe
Tumblr media
"What is Slow Fashion Anyway?"
Slow fashion movement promotes social and environmental justice in the fashion business. Its focus on the issue of overproduction and overconsumption is what makes it unique. (Vito, 2022) It's about making thoughtful, sustainable choices, focusing on quality over quantity, and appreciating the craftsmanship behind each piece. Think of slow fashion as the farm-to-table movement but for your wardrobe. It's about buying less, choosing well, and making it last. Sounds pretty awesome, right? Unlike fast fashion, which churns out cheap, trendy clothing at breakneck speed, slow fashion is all about taking a step back.
It's also amazing to see Malaysia's thrift scene booming lately, promoting slow fashion, and it's no surprise why. Finding unique finds at thrift stores feels way more exciting than splurging on fast fashion. It's like fate, adding a sprinkle of magic to your shopping adventures, all without breaking the bank. (Chong, 2021) literally perfect for broke students like me lol *cries inside*
Tumblr media

Influencers: The Unexpected Champions of Slow Fashion
when you think of social media influencers, the first image that pops into your mind might be someone flaunting the latest fast fashion haul. but hold that thought!
Several influencers are extremely valuable to companies and campaigns because of their relatability and variety of skills. They bring their personality, sometimes their thoughts, emotions, and vulnerabilities to connect with people; they're not just selling the products. (Henderson, 2024) They break down the complexities of slow fashion, from the environmental impact of textile waste to the importance of ethical brands, making it easy to understand and share.
I think I have the perfect example when talking about sustainable fashion! Meet Kim Chae-won, the brains behind Popsiz, a cool sustainable clothing brand out of Seoul.
instagram

Popsiz isn’t your average label – they're all about upcycling vintage denim and printing rad designs on indigo instead of regular denim to save water. Plus, they use natural dyes, organic fabrics, recycled plastics, and leftover materials, all packaged up in biodegradable and recyclable wrapping. (Ghosh, 2022)

Chae-won kicked off this eco-friendly venture at just 24 back in 2020, and now her brand’s blowing up, thanks to K-pop stars like TWICE and Red Velvet rocking her threads.
"I regularly receive messages from audiences who learn about sustainable fashion from K-pop stars who perform wearing my pieces. I feel blessed when getting replies from people who gained a new awareness of sustainable fashion, mostly young people like teenagers to those in their early 20s," said Chae-won in an interview.

And you know what's a plus point for me? It's when they offer styling tips on their social media, showing how to rock multiple looks with a minimalist wardrobe, making creativity the new fashion statement. Moreover, thrift hauls and DIY upcycling tutorials are all the rage, thanks to influencers like Chae-won. They’re proving that second-hand doesn’t mean second-rate, inspiring us to get crafty with our old clothes.
The Takeaway
To sum up everything, the slow fashion movement is gaining momentum, and social media influencers are at the forefront of this change. By promoting sustainable brands, educating their followers, and showcasing creative ways to embrace slow fashion, they’re helping to redefine what it means to be stylish.
so! next time you’re scrolling through Instagram or TikTok, keep an eye out for influencers who are doing more than just selling a look – they’re selling a lifestyle that’s kind to the planet and its people!
stay stylish, stay sustainable, and remember: fashion is what you buy, but style is what you do with it!
thank you, xie xie, kamsahamida, arigato! we'll meet again in my next blog! ʕ⁎̯͡⁎ʔ༄

Week 6 :  What is Digital Citizenship? Hashtag Publics, Political Engagement and Activism
today we won't be talking about handsome men like in my previous blog :(
BUT! Let’s dive into a topic I recently learned in class that's super relevant in our hyper-connected world: Digital Citizenship. You might've heard this term thrown around a lot, especially in the context of social media and online communities, but what does it really mean?
Tumblr media
At its core, digital citizenship refers to the responsible and effective use of digital technologies to engage in society, politics, and community. It's all about being aware of the digital world and your role in it. Just like being a good citizen in the physical world involves obeying laws, being kind to neighbors, and participating in community events, digital citizenship encompasses a similar set of principles for the online realm.
One of the most fascinating aspects of digital citizenship is the concept of hashtag publics. Hashtags are powerful tools that unite people around a common cause, idea, or event. They help like-minded individuals find each other and build communities, like #BlackLivesMatter or #FreePalestine, which globally amplify voices.
Tumblr media
@/jordsjailacc changed the context of a famous meme and posted with just the hashtag #FreePalestine to raise awareness and thousands of people have reposted and liked it.
Hashtags also make spreading information and raising awareness about important issues easier, as a trending hashtag can draw attention to a cause and educate the masses. (Bonilla, 2015) To join in hashtag activism, all you need to do is "like," "share," or "retweet" posts on Twitter—it's that easy compared to other forms of activism. Hashtags also create spaces for conversation and debate, letting people discuss, share their views, and challenge ideas. Can you believe how powerful hashtags can be?! Let's talk about a case in Malaysia that was raising awareness and making a change through a single hashtag, #MakeSchoolASaferPlace.
Tumblr media
Malaysian teenager Ain Husniza Saiful Nizam's journey from an anonymous student to a national leader against school harassment began with her male physical education teacher allegedly joking about rape. Appalled by this, Ain posted a TikTok video in April, which quickly went viral, garnering over 1.8 million views. In the video, she recounted how the teacher suggested that if boys wanted to commit rape, they should target women over 18, leading to laughter among the boys and silence from the girls. Can you imagine how terrifying and sickening was this??? in a high school???
This sparked the #MakeSchoolASaferPlace campaign, with thousands of students sharing their experiences of harassment. Despite facing threats and potential expulsion, Ain's video struck a chord, highlighting the pervasive abuse in Malaysian schools and igniting a national debate on the need for urgent reforms.
Tumblr media
Thanks to Ain, more and more students speak out about their experiences through @/savetheschoolsmy on Instagram.
Enough of hashtags, we need to give some attention to political engagement and activism too.
Political engagement and activism have evolved significantly. Digital campaigns on social media platforms are now essential tools for politicians and activists to mobilize support, raise funds, and spread their messages. (Leong, 2015) Platforms like Change.org have simplified creating and signing petitions, enabling individuals to advocate for change globally.
Tumblr media
Virtual protests, exemplified by initiatives like #BlackOutTuesday, originating as a response to the killing of George Floyd and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, participants posted black squares on their social media feeds to symbolize mourning and to draw attention to racial injustice. Social media facilitates rapid response and mobilization, empowering activists to organize protests, share updates, and maintain momentum with real-time communication.
Being a digital citizen means more than just being online; it means engaging thoughtfully, respectfully, and proactively in our digital spaces. By understanding the power of hashtags and leveraging digital tools for political engagement and activism, we can contribute to positive change in our communities and the world.
remember, with great power comes great responsibility. so let’s all strive to be informed, respectful, and active digital citizens!
thank you, xie xie, kamsahamida, arigato! hope to see u in my next blog! >.<

Week 5 : The Digital Community and Fandom of K-Drama Actors
i'm actually a huge fan of K-pop and K-dramas hence i'm really excited to talk about this week's blog '^'
In the age of digital connectivity, the way we engage with entertainment and its stars has evolved dramatically. Among the various digital fandoms, those surrounding K-drama actors stand out for their passion, creativity, and sheer scale. These communities not only celebrate their favorite actors but also create a space for cultural exchange, emotional support (because i cried about our beloved summer alot), and global friendship.
Tumblr media

The Rise of K-Drama and Its Global Impact
Korean dramas, or K-dramas, have seen an exponential rise in global popularity over the past decade. With their compelling (and cheesy) storylines, high production values, and talented actors (kim soohyun <3), K-dramas have captivated audiences worldwide. Streaming platforms like Netflix, Viki, and Kocowa have played a significant role in making these dramas accessible to a global audience, breaking down geographical barriers.
As K-dramas spread across the globe, so did the admiration for their actors. Fans from different countries and cultures found common ground in their love for these stars (me too hehe), leading to the formation of digital communities dedicated to supporting and celebrating K-drama actors. So, what do we do as fans? Sometimes there will be creative expressions such as fan art and fan fiction. Fans channel their admiration into creating beautiful artwork or writing stories that extend the lives of their favorite characters beyond the screen.
Tumblr media
Here's one of my favorite fan art of #QueenOfTears, which beautifully recreated romantic scenes of the characters.
Other than that, fans also organize campaigns to support their favorite actors, from trending hashtags on Twitter to celebrating actors' birthdays with digital events. These campaigns often garner significant attention and can even influence media coverage. I remember participating in celebrating birthdays! Fans normally will create hashtags surrounding the actors names, for example, #HAPPY(name)DAY or using their names as puns.
Tumblr media
Like this post from @/14aehyun on Twitter, the user used the actor's real name, which is Jeong Yun-o, for the hashtag #YUNOwhoseDAYitis, as YUNO sounds like 'you know'.
Another example is when a K-drama releases a new episode so fans will communicate (or scream) about it using hashtags.
Tumblr media
The twitter post here is a perfect example because there was a special episode released for #QueenOfTears and it was about the high production quality of the drama. They showed behind-the-scenes content, the impressive CGI, and unreleased footages (of them KISSING OMG) which made fans (me) go crazy and share their thoughts using the specific hashtag.
Moving on.. fan communities often create subtitles and translations for K-dramas, interviews, and other related content, making it accessible to non-Korean speakers to bridge language gaps. (i love them for this)
Tumblr media
Virtual meet-and-greets have risen in popularity, allowing fans to participate in online fan meetings and Q&A sessions with actors, bringing stars closer to their international fans. Additionally, fans often unite to support causes endorsed by their favorite actors, from charity drives to environmental campaigns, highlighting the positive impact of these communities.
Reality TV for K-Drama Fans: Bringing Fiction to Reality
Actors frequently appear on variety shows, where they participate in games, challenges, and candid conversations. These appearances showcase their personalities, humor, and talents beyond acting.
Byeon Woo-seok appeared in a reality TV show Running Man to promote his latest drama #LovelyRunner, where he played as a high school student. In the episode, there will be a 'hyper-realistic' situational drama featuring the high school days of Byeon Woo-seok, which also showcased his cuteness and adorable personality off-screen.
Tumblr media
he looks handsome bro..
As K-dramas continue to captivate global audiences, the digital community and reality TV shows will undoubtedly play a significant role in sustaining and expanding this vibrant fandom. The world of K-drama fans is a testament to the unifying power of shared passion and the boundless potential of digital connection.
hey! if you read it up till here, you’re a real one ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡ thank you, xie xie, kamsahamida, arigato! hope to see u in my next blog!
