One of the writers of the show, Kate Trefry, about Stranger Things:

She thinks that the popularity of the show is not only determined by the aesthetic and nostalgia for the 80s. It's the mix of very classic storytelling with very left field but still accessible sci-fy. Grounded, but very weird and unexpected. The Duffer brothers are digging deeper constantly looking for the idea you don't see coming. It is ''the'' coming of age, Stand by me, Goonies, that level of classic action-adventure with heart, a very character driven show. Old school storytelling.

For season 5 they talk a lot about the origin of the UD and what it is, and why the town is being punished. She can't tell what the metaphor of the Upside Down is without spoilering season 5.

The show is about people showing up for each other instead of being scared of when someone is different. Being compassionate. The end makes you cry a lot, it has such a beautiful melancholy, classic Spielberg, that sweet loss of innocence, the sorrow of an adventure ending and it ends with literal and figurative bangs.

Lucas is deem as a player by his b-ball bros for living with 2 girls, and he indulges in the cool points it gives him bc it's actually Max who's the player that pulled 2 baddies

El can finally do the chores of laundry and grocery shopping since Lumax hates those the most

Oh forgot to mention that it's Lucas that has to hold off Elmax if they get to boxing against bullies like Angela or else the opp gonna get murdered lol Lucas is voice of reason in the trio

I love how Will canonically does not tolerate subtlety. When Mike asked him like you didn’t think we’d grow up and get girlfriends? That boy straight up said, “yeah. I guess I did. I really did.”

Imagine how this is gonna carry over to when they get together. Mike notices that Will likes something he says or does and Mike points it out, “oh, you like that?” And Will just smiles and goes, “yeah. I did. Do it again.”

I said it once, I’m saying it again: their flirting is going to be next level lmao

Let's talk about inciting incidents. If you don't know[if you do skip this paragraph], an inciting incident is a piece of a story required to start the plot. If a character does an action they haven't done up until now, they need an event to motivate it. There needs to be a reason that they're doing it now that differs from when they weren't doing it. For example, El would not have broken up with Mike had he not committed the inciting incident of lying to her, that would have been out of the blue and raised the question "why now?"

But now I wanna talk about Mike and El staying broken up. They stay broken up after El finds out the truth of what Hopper said to Mike. That makes some sense, Mike is still avoiding full responsibility...but then they make up. And they still don't get back together. But don't worry, don't worry, THEN we have our inciting incident

....or what should be. Mike saying "I love her" sure feels like an inciting incident, doesn't it? You expect it to really push the story along and into new territory. Except for the fact that we know now that El heard that too and...she didn't do anything about it. Yes, she seemed happy and interested when he tried to say it, but she wasn't interested in getting back together with him enough to bring it up herself. Which means that it isn't the inciting incident as it has resulted in inaction for long enough that we need a new one.

Okay, so I think it would just be easier to skip ahead to when she DOES do something and work backwards, right? She tells him she heard him, that she loves him too, and kisses him to get back together with him at the end of the season. Working backwards, the inciting incident to this would not be the truth in episode 4 or the ily in episode 6(?), as we've established, so it must be....oh

Hopper died. And she's moving to California. Everything in her life is changing. She needs comfort. She needs stability. She needs constancy. She had multiple opportunities to get back together with him but those events expired their ability to be "inciting incidents" when they failed to motivate her into action. One could argue that a person in life may wait to see if he'll say it and Lucas' book says she and the Byers went away with Owens for those two months so she was unable to, but one could counterargue that they both don't establish that in the show and there is no reason within narrative structure to stall it but to, similar to Mike in season 4, imply that the motivation is something else.

El does not get back together with Mike when given the repeated option, including at multiple instances when she is given new information and motivation to do so and the original reasons for the breakup resolve. She only initiates that with him when her life is being uprooted. She gets back together with him for a sense of constancy in her life. She reverts back to him for comfort.

*which he ends up failing to provide, which she confronts him about the day her bully rubs in that her dad is dead and while repairing his figurine in her diorama. It's all about seeking comfort and constancy. She wants to return to what her life was at the beginning of season 3, but she only needs it after a major trauma. She does need Mike romantically, but she only wants him platonically and that has been confirmed since season 3.

ok so i talked to a professional lighting designer i know and here’s what’s going on with the picture:

basically sets will use a key light that will highlight the subject of a scene. this light is normally yellow in tone and the brightest one on a set. you can see here its coming from the upper right corner and making the girl’s hair and shoulder the most highlighted part of the shot and also very yellow in tone. she is most likely standing in of will’s light, preventing him from being properly highlighted.

now, to ensure that that bright yellow light doesn’t over expose the shot, another light needs to counteract it. it needs to create a shadow for the highlight to contrast with. this is called a fill light. because the key light is yellow, the opposite color will be taken from the color wheel to contrast it: blue. this is why will looks so pale, the blue tones of the fill light are the only thing shining on him due to her blocking him from the key light. the fill light looks like its coming from the opposite direction as the key light thus she is not obscuring him from it.

this would also explain what looks on the surface to be mistakes in makeup application. they are netflix’s darling, they have good makeup artists. they wouldnt just not apply makeup under his bangs or around the collar. this is just the result of where she isn’t blocking the key light contrasting with the fill light that he’s mostly bathed in.

the reason the lighting looks so dramatic is because the white balance in the picture was likely off due to this being a paparazzi photo where they were unaware of the lighting conditions, whereas that’s something they fix using the filming cameras when they know what lighting to expect.
