They’ve been rebuilding the Tower of Babel, but this time they have a team of linguists on site. Every time God smites the builders and invents a dozen new languages, the linguists have a dozen decently sized translations in about a month and work can start up again.

The linguists have been really into it. They say the new phonemes are fascinating. As for God, I assume that at this point he’s just curious to see how far this goes.

How you decide what character emotion portraits to make for Start Again/Stars in Time? Do you do the script first and then make portraits based on that, or do you have a different system? :0

it's been a while but at the start i think i just drew The Big Emotions (talking while smiling, talking while being sad, being sad, thinking, surprised, and maybe a Special Character Emotion for each (like the housemaiden going all awawawa!!! or the researcher reading. thats their Special Character Emotions)), and i add portraits as needed!

as an example from the prologue, i already had an angry face for the kid ready (left), and then when I got to implementing the King battle dialogue and the kid gets mad, i thought that face wasnt angry enough- they wouldnt get mad here the same way they get mad while talking to everyone else, thats the KING who FROZE THE COUNTRY IN TIME!!!! THATS THE BAD GUY!!!!! so i drew another one (right). more desperate, more childish/protective (fetal position!), more teeth (because when you get angry you show teeth!), with eyes closed because theyre so!!!!! mad!!!!! aaaaaaa!!!!!

i usually think about adding new expressions at the script stage, but i tend to leave the drawing till i actually have to add the expressions to the scene. if im at the adding expressions stage and i cant find a face that fits (expressions i have are too tame, or too extreme), thats when i draw a new one. usually i just draw over an existing pose, but sometimes the pose isn't cutting it, so i draw a whole new one. in the last few weeks ive drawn a couple more for odile and bonnie and sif! moments need to hit! i draw comics! i know what emotions are! etc

i do tend to go very granular in my expressions drawings and ive accepted this about myself. see look you might think this is the same emotion but it is not. notice the eyes. in the first one she is giving me "haha... this is awkward... i am telling an awkward story about myself.... dont laugh at me..." or even "haha, what?" vibes but in the second she is giving me "oh... YOU are telling me an awkward story about yourself... i think you were stupid to do this but i am well behaved so i will just laugh awkwardly..." or even "you're lying to my face rn.... its fine... i guess you dont trust me that much.... oh no...." like in the second one you can feel the pity/shame/pain in her eyes you can feel it its DIFFERENT!!!!!!!! this is why my portraits count is currently at 340. save me
