i guess you’ve also seen this video with compilation of dankovsky’s patho3 voice lines aaand i don’t know why but i decided to make a text file with all his voice lines in both russian and english

translation

I’ll start with translation of some phrases because i haven’t found English versions of these voice lines in Russian.

RU: И как это объяснить? Никак.

ENG: And how to explain it? No way.

ENG: Someone is definetely ridiculing me.

Camera obscura? Camera lumina.

Camera obscura (“dark room”) is a natural phenomenon and also an optical device that projects an inverted and reversed image onto a wall through a hole in a darkened room or box. It was used by artists and scientists; also camera obscura was a predecessor of a photographic camera.

There is no such term as a “camera lumina” but I think this phrase was derived from “camera obscura” because lumina is a plural for “lumen” (even though I’m not sure is it accurate if we talk about Latin grammar).

I will write an alternative variant of translation made by me and marked as a “ENG2” or just write some notes. A very important note: I’m not a target audience of the translation so if I write an alternative variant it doesn’t mean that the original one is bad (I have no right to do that I guess)

ENG: The town dribbles… hm.

ENG2: The town rustles.

Daniil says here “шурчит” which is a very uncommon word; Russian National Corpus shows me only two samples of this word. I guess it’s kind of an old-fashioned word according to the samples.

RU: Думай... мысли, скотина! / Думай... мысли...

ENG: Think… think, dammit! / Think, think!

Instead of “dammit” Daniil says “скотина” which literally means “cattle” but here it is an insult that can be translated as “brute”.

RU: Дышите. Не дышите.

ENG: Deep breathing. And let it out.

Daniil says “breath, don’t breath” which is a phrase used by doctors during a medical examination with a stethoscope.

RU: Пустота хуже воровства.

ENG: Less is more, but emptiness… dull.

The literal translation of this phrase is “emptiness is worse than stealing”. It is a reference to a russian saying «простота хуже воровства» (“simplicity is worse than stealing”) which means that being too naive or indiscretionary can cause a lot of problems. Actually I would like to hear your opinions about that translation, idk but it seems a bit strange to me.

ENG: Once Dankovsky, now a thousand fragments of Dankovsky.

ENG2: There was one big Dankovsky and now there are a lot of little ones.

ENG: Superstitions aren’t real.

ENG2: There are no bad superstitions.

RU: Ты это придумал… ты это придумал?

ENG: Did you invent this yourself?

ENG2: You invented it… Did you invent it?

RU: Ты победила, безносая.

ENG: You’ve won, noseless one. / You’ve won, Reaper.

I was very surprised when I saw the first variant because, indeed, a literal translation is “You’ve won, noseless” but in russian “noseless” is a metaphor for death. And later translators realised that somethings wrong and they replaced “noseless” with “reaper”. But, you know… it took them 10 records to realise it… this is so funny to me...

RU: Сон разума рождает чудовищ.

ENG: The sleep of reasons produces monsters.

This phrase is a reference to Francisco Goya’s artwork with the same name. Actually I don’t know what to add here but I guess this painting suits Daniil so well <3

nuances of russian

Least interesting part of this but I still want to add it here…

RU: Зеро.

ENG: Zero.

In russian you can say zero as “ноль” (standard and common word) or “зеро” (bookish word, often used figuratively, obviously preferred by Daniil)

RU: Кинофильма замерла.

ENG: The cinematograph stops.

Literal translation of this sentence is “the film has stopped”. Nouns in russian can be masculine, feminine and neutral; “film” is a masculine noun now, but in the past there were two nouns, both masculine (кинофильм) and feminine (кинофильма). Daniil uses the second one.
