TWICE GLEEFUL 1.02: "ASSEMBLY REQUIRED"

With the new Glee Club beginning to take shape, the McKinley Sparks make their debut performance at the annual homecoming assembly. Despite Sue’s objections, the performance sparks interest from a diverse assortment of kids, boosting the Glee Club’s numbers considerably. As Artie reunites with fellow New Directions alumnus Sam Evans (CHORD OVERSTREET) and approaches the football team, running back Cedric finds himself torn on whether joining Glee Club would be the right thing to do, in "Assembly Required", out September 3rd, 2025.

16 years after the disbandment of New Directions, a new school year starts at McKinley High, as freshmen Izzy and Danny struggle to adjust to the school under Sue's rule. Their paths cross with those of sophomore theatre kids Yasmin and Nico, who openly stand up against Sue in an effort to resurrect the defunct Glee Club. Sympathizing with them, Izzy and Danny offer to help them in their mission, refurbishing their chosen classroom into a proper choir room and roping in Izzy's father, former New Directions founding member Artie Abrams, into being the club's director.

Welcome to a new segment on this blog which I affectionally named after Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two's very own Tunes on Tuesday. It is essentially the Twice Gleeful equivalent to the First Listen Fridays that were such a Glee tradition back in the day, revealing the songs that'll appear as major musical numbers throughout each chapter.

Addendum: as this fic is meant to serve as an alternative S6, songs that were performed in the canon S6 will also feature in the story, due to being placed in entirely different contexts.

It's been a while...

So it's been a decade, and a couple months, since I last updated this blog. I fully admit that, thanks to Season 6 having a very similar plot to the premise I came up with (albeit with very different outcomes for certain characters which, to this day, I still don't fully approve of), as well as a gradual loss of interest in Glee in favor of other things, the original version of Twice Gleeful has been kind of... collecting dust, to put it kindly?

You know what, let's not mince words here. Twice Gleeful 1.0 is dead. Looking back at it, it was just kind of clunky and weird? And it hasn't aged well. Since 2015, society has changed, for better or worse, and I have changed just as much. I have educated myself so much over these years, and now I'm almost 30.

After all this time, I have figured now was the right time to pick Twice Gleeful back up, and give it a complete overhaul. The basic premise, of a future fic about the Glee Club being brought back following its cancellation in Season 5, featuring brand new characters and children of canon characters alike, is staying the same, but most of the details have been completely reworked. Some characters have been given different names, some have been completely replaced or scrapped entirely, and of course, songs released post-2015 get to be part of the story now.

Unfortunately the files I've been using for the song cover graphics have been lost in one of the many reboots my computers have gone through, and since Glee Forum shut down (R.I.P.), I can't track down the person who put those together. My original beta reader @tiktokofoz-blog also appears to have, sadly, fallen off the face of the Earth, which honestly breaks my heart because he was always so lovely and supportive. I did contact the author of @gleethnystory and I did send her the first two chapters, but I haven't heard back from her since. And I could draw art for the fic, but as you can tell by the illustrations I've posted on my main account, my art style is far from the most realistic, and this being a fic for a live-action show, I'd prefer to make the characters as close to being plausibly pictured in reality as possible. So if you still draw fanart for Glee (e.g. @silkoodles, @warblercore, @strawberriistarz, @the-deef, @cannibalcasserole, @faunshiii, @tekahikaaa, @eafee-drawsstuff), if you'd like to provide illustrations for my fic and help the story come to life, feel free to message me!

I'll make posts about the characters and chapters in due time. The first two chapters are all finished, and I'm aiming for an August 27th release for the premiere!

A little preview of what’s to come in the next few chapters...

There be spoilers!

There’ll be one more tribute episode before the story is over: a tribute to an act that was never done in the canon Glee.

Many more canon characters will be making appearances. Expect appearances by major characters like Kurt, Puck, Quinn and Sam, and by minor characters such as Artie’s film school classmate Julie, Carl Howell, and Penny Owen. Also, Tina will make another appearance and get to sing an uninterrupted solo for the first time in years.

Of course, there’ll be more mash-ups, which'll include Vocal Adrenaline’s first ever mash-up, a Grease-inspired Rosellis duet and--wait for it--a mash-up that includes an NLT song.

And perhaps the biggest spoiler of them all...

Chapter 13: “Glass and Diamond” Sneak Peek - Rachel Stays the Night at Anabiel’s

An hour and 43 minutes later, Rachel arrived at Anabiel’s cozy little house in Waynesville, and the two were having a nice vegan meal together, facing each other, in Anabiel’s bedroom. “It’s so refreshing to have you here, Rachel. You’re the first McKinley faculty member to even consider visiting me ever since I got the job.” Anabiel stated, taking one of her oven-baked sweet potato wedges into her mouth and calmly chewing and swallowing it before adding, “So, what brings you here?”

In response, Rachel let out a sad sigh and reached for the gold necklace hanging around her neck. “It’s about the dance.” she explained, “Seeing Shiloh and Danny performing together brought back… So many memories…”

Anabiel then allowed her eyes to follow Rachel’s hands, noticing what that particular necklace read. “Finn?” she asked, an eyebrow raised in wonder. “As in… Finn Hudson? The former quarterback whose plaque is carefully stored backstage in the auditorium?”

Rachel just nodded silently, tenderly smiling and holding the name of her dearly beloved beau. “We were in New Directions together. And though our relationship didn’t exactly start under the best circumstances, I knew, from the moment I first saw him, that it was meant to be. I always dreamed that, after achieving my dreams, I’d get to come back to McKinley and find him teaching there… But before I knew it, he was just… gone.”

It was then that Anabiel moved over closer to her with an empathic smile. “It must’ve been awful for you when he died.” She told her in a tone of voice just as bittersweet, “I know… I, too, had to deal with the pain of losing the man I loved.” She then looked over at a portrait that hung on the wall in front of them; it was her, visibly younger, with an Eurasian man in similarly bohemian clothing. “Orion Granger. I knew him since childhood, and when we transitioned from friends to lovers, it was predictable, but natural. Even I thought it would last forever. That is, until he was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. I knew he wouldn’t have much time left, so I made the best out of the little time I had left with him.”

“But at least you knew he’d leave.” Rachel retorted breathily, resting her head on Anabiel’s shoulder. “Finn’s death was just so… So sudden. We all had a hard time processing that he was gone, myself most of all. And while I was still able to move on, I couldn’t bring myself to forget him. I’m sure that, somewhere out there, his star is still shining down on me… And maybe watching over the kids as well.”

That night, as Rachel soundly slept with Anabiel on the latter’s hammock, Anabiel couldn’t stop staring at the picture of her with Orion. She couldn’t stop thinking about how much she missed him, and about how she turned out to have that, of all things, in common with Rachel. In fact, aside from both being particularly close to the Glee club and the fact that neither of them ate meat, the two women didn’t really have much in common. With that in mind, Anabiel smiled and pulled Rachel close, falling asleep alongside her.

Fun fact regarding Glass and Diamond: both Shiloh’s Sadie Hawkins outfit and her eventual performance of the Fallen Angel/Boom Clap mashup featuring Danny are inspired by the first half of Charli XCX’s American Music Awards performance in which she performs the original Boom Clap (from the start to the 1:44 mark), as seen in the video above.

Chapter 13: “Glass and Diamond” Sneak Peek - August and Patricia Talk Sadie Hawkins

As the only current Glee boy to be dating someone outside of McKinley, August definitely had to talk things out with Patricia, which they did sitting opposite each other at the Lima Bean. “Are you sure going with you to your school’s Sadie Hawkins dance is a good idea?” she asked him, understandably confused, as she watched him munch on his blueberry muffin. “I’m not even a McKinley student, is that even allowed?”

“Going to different schools didn’t stop Kurt Hummel from asking Blaine Anderson to junior prom back in 2011, months before Blaine’s transfer.” August pointed out shortly after finishing the muffin. “Besides, it’ll be fun! Your first high school dance experience! Sure, it’s not an official dance with a King and Queen and everything, but that just makes it better because there’s no risk of getting a bucket of sticky red liquid dumped on you. And the best part? You get to be in charge.”

Patricia just let out a chuckle before picking up her cup and calmly sipping on her iced latte. “Now that you said it, you’re probably aware that ever since I quit the Bubble Pop Beauties, I’ve been feeling more confident, like I can do anything… Like I can don a catsuit like Black Widow and punch anyone who judges me square in the face.” She stated just as she put her cup down. “And so far we’ve been pretty even when it comes to taking the lead…”

As he wiped the muffin crumbs off his lips, August let his eyes dart around the cafe. “So… Is that a yes?”

In response, Patricia only stood up and lifted his chin with her pointer finger. “I hope you’re looking forward to be swept off your feet.” She told him deviously, before walking away with a giggle, watched by her dumbstruck boyfriend all the way out.
