this was in the tags of a very funny screenshot and i didnt want to derail there, so i will make a new post: dishwashers manufactured after 2013 take MUCH less water than washing dishes by hand. it seems counterintuitive but it is provably true and has been tested extensively. if you are washing dishes by hand as a way to lower utility bills you are shooting yourself in the foot. dishwashers also sterilize dishes and in general are much much much much cleaner than hand washing, which becomes extra important if you live with anyone who has immune issues, long covid, cancer, etc. if you tried to hand wash your dishes with the temperature possible inside a dishwasher you would get serious burns. it's not physically possible to hand wash dishes and get them cleaner (as in, the amount of bacteria and other contaminants on the surface) than you can with a dishwasher. its almost like an autoclave in there
also do not use sponges to clean things but thats a different post
Tumblr media
oh my god i went looking for the sponge bacteria post and found these tags. everyone on this website needs to pay attention in school when they teach you about germ theory. i personally know four people who became permanently crippled from getting basic bacterial food poisoning once. bacteria does in fact make you drop dead, but more often it just makes you permanently ill for the rest of your life. i know "hygiene hypothesis" (being too clean makes you sicker in the long run) was big for a while in the 2000s but its been mostly debunked
it's obvious and inarguable that having a dishwasher at all is a first world thing, and only the wealthy or lucky members of the first world. it's a luxury. what im trying to say is that if you have access to one of these luxury machines, please use it. i run into so many people who have dishwashers and dont use them and then backpat themselves about water saving and cleanliness, both of which are measurably worse with handwashing. its not virtuous or practical or efficient to wash dishes by hand if you have a functional dishwasher.
questions of "laziness" etc can be referred to other discussions of disability vs protestantism and wont be addressed here. but i will mention that i know a few people who have to hand wash and have been able to use a barstool to make being at the sink for long periods of time easier.

reminder that if you ever buy wool yarn secondhand you should put it in a plastic bag in the freezer for a week, let it thaw 24 hours, then refreeze another week. this makes sure that if there are any moths or pests they are killed by the first freeze, and the remaining eggs are lured to hatch by the thawing and then killed with the second freeze. until this process is complete you must keep the yarn isolated from your existing stash or you risk any infestation spreading. i buy a lot of wool yarn from thrift and antique shops and always do this and have never had a problem with moths or other bugs. if you buy wool sweaters or other wool things secondhand you should also do this just to be safe

I'm really worried for all of us. I want us to be as well as possible and for that to be the case we really gotta stay informed:

(resources compiled by sp0receress and agitpropandabsurdity on IG, I just copied em to share here)
best way to protect yourself is to wear a mask (n95 or kn95) wherever possible and do social events outside if you're not gonna mask. though the latter isn't foolproof, I read a case study of a jogger infecting a bunch of people in a park. it can happen.

Fugimoto from Ponyo and the Cliff by the Sea is the most character ever. he loves his daughters very much. he invents new types of fish daily. his wife is a literal goddess. he hates pollution. he keeps a safe full of potions in a way that suspiciously resembles a wine cellar. he takes care of the ocean. he does his make-up in an intentionally odd/bad way. he has to use a watering can to keep himself wet out of the water. he gets nervous when he thinks about seeing his wife. his daughters are fish. he's always two accidents away from a panic attack. he's a girl-dad. he keeps two identical copies of his comfort outfit for emergencies. he has long, fluffy hair that floats ominously behind him. his wife can warp reality because, again, She's A Whole Goddess.

young me especially would have hated hearing this but networking is literally the most important thing you can do to improve your situation like forget economic barriers to education etc just keep making friends with different people and eventually someone will offer you a hand up just because they dig your vibe and that is exactly all that's happening when undeserving people surpass you anyway

The thing about the "white cube" style of art gallery display is that it's actually not letting you appreciate the art in a vacuum. Art looks different in different displays, and I appreciate the attempt to solve that problem, but a blank white wall is itself an aesthetic, it has its own cultural connotations and background and associations. It is not devoid of extraneous meaning. A white cube is not a vacuum, it is a white cube. It looks sterile, empty, industrial. Not all art was meant to be displayed in a white cube. Leonardo Da Vinci never intended for the Mona Lisa to be displayed in a white cube. There is no such thing as a vacuum.

"Hey, these ads you reported? Totally okay, we'll keep running them. Oh, that post you made where you had a screenshot of the ads we said were okay? Nope, that's sexually explicit and we're not gonna let you post them."
Sure, Tumblr. That makes sense.

I am exceptionally lucky in that my parents never hit me, grounded me, confiscated my things, banned me from my hobbies or threatened any of these actions to make me behave as a kid. as an adult it has made me realise how very very long a road most people have to traverse before they can take a statement like 'no rule that must be enforced by threat is legitimate' seriously.
