i follow some very few fanfic prompt blogs for my very specific taste in fanfiction, and i remember once one of those blogs created a prompt month (like wh/umptober or whatever, but i think it was for hurt/comfort specifically) and they said that works that romanticized incest and pedophilia were not allowed. and ofc they got several anon asks of little pissy proshits who yelled "IT'S FICTION, IT'S NOT REAL, WHY ARE YOU OPPRESSING ART!!!"

like damn, why is wanting your space free from gross shit such a controversial take. why won't you proshits just unfollow that blog then. jesus christ.

A warning real quick, I'm going to share one of my experiences from being groomed as a child for this post.

I've seen people use the excuse for groomers by people in proship spaces that "they said they hate kids so how could they be a predator?" as some supposed "gotcha!" whenever creepy or inappropriate behavior is brought to light, but I think back to one of my own groomers who claimed he hated children, and he only dated me when he was in his mid 20s and I was a preteen because he "saw me as a person and not a kid" (Which was a lie, he obviously didn't even see me as a person but rather a sexual object). He constantly used it to cover his ass as an excuse but it didn't make him less of a pedophile who groomed me. He was even in prison before for charges concerning grooming other preteens, still he said he "hated" kids despite lusting after them constantly.

Besides. If you hate kids I'm assuming you'll care less about how adults sexually abusing them harms them from what I've seen. Quit defending groomers like reasonable logic somehow applies to them.

Proshippers always use the "It's just fiction/a drawing" excuse, but if you ask if that means racist caricatures should be allowed in media, two things either happen - they dodge the question and backtrack on their point, or become mask off racist and just say "yes, that's fine since it's fictional". As much as they compare anyone against glorifying gross things in fiction to bigots, it seems to mostly be projection with how they act about these subjects.

If you think people of color don't have a right to be upset about racism being shown in media because "it's just fiction", congratulations, you're just racist. There's no way to defend that viewpoint without being racist about it.

fandom spaces are often "safe spaces" or a form of escapism from the cruel world.

but imagine you're an abuse victim/survivor, and you see the fandom sexualizing and/or romanticizing abusive relationships, including incestuous and pedophilic relationships.

imagine you're a child or a teenager and you constantly see art or fanfiction sexualizing a young character.

imagine you're a black person and you see how the fandom treats the black characters. either by calling them "boring", hating on them, or ignoring them altogether. you also notice romantic pairings involving black characters rarely receive attention from fans.

imagine you're a fat person and the fandom is constantly drawing a fat character skinny, or they make fat jokes about the character.

imagine you're latine and you're often sexualized and/or you're seen as aggressive. especially if you're a latina woman.

imagine you're disabled (mentally, physically, intelectually etc.) and the disabled character is either grossly infantilized or demonized. of course, this treatment depends as there are multiple disabilities out there, but overall they're rarely treated with respect.

imagine you're aspec and the aspec character's identity is erased for the sake of romance and sex.

of course, there are many other examples to be listed here (feel free to add if you want). but the only ppl who feel safe in fandoms are white adults. then you treat these groups like they're "puritans" who hate fun.

The "fiction and reality are completely separate" mindset proshippers have is so ridiculous and funny to me. Like, wow, I had no clue every fictional work or media just randomly spawned into existence one day, and apparently weren't written by actual people who often create media to portray their personal ideals and opinions! Of course! I put that in my bio since proshippers are no strangers to harassing people who don't agree with them, despite the attempt to change the definition of proshipper from "problematic shipper" (which is the original definition, or at least what was popular for the definition when I was unfortunately involved in those groups) to "anti harassment against ships".

I'm staunchly against harassing people, I prefer to criticize from my own blog and block and report the more harmful blogs. Harassment is more likely to get you banned, anyways. But knowing this doesn't automatically make me a proshipper, obviously. I think only proshippers think that, and even still...obviously it isn't even true for most of them.
