Final Project
Tumblr media
Artist Statement
For the project, I chose to do option 3 and 2 to create a singular piece with both incorporated. I was inspired by a few paper light box designs and my original box design that was done two years ago. I was inspired by a couple of artists; Hari & Deepti and a Youtuber named Chezlin who creates by hand and digitally. Through the option, I desired to explore folklores that are told from generation to generation. From the folklores, I wanted to bring the life of the tales into a form of a light box. I believe that a paper light box is like a gate way, bringing the audience into the mythical world. This envelops them in a magic circle that brings into the folklore world to interact with the mythical creatures. During the creation of the work, I developed deep remixability, mixing the digital elements with the traditional paper light box. In my work, I incorporated different folklores into one piece which is usually are hand drawn or written however, I wanted to have a continuity turn where I explore those in a more modern digital style. In the work, I wanted to mainly keep the tales from Japanese and Chinese culture since it is related in a metamedium. For the interpretation of the artwork, I desired to have the creatures come to life to interact with, I tried to create depth in the paper layers to create the sense of space, allowing the feel to move inside. I then laser cutter out origami rabbits and cranes to place around the box to have the story popping out from the box but into the real work. Finally, I chose to incorporate the story of the jade rabbit, Chang’e the moon princess, Kuchisake-onna, Kasa-obake, the thousand crane wish, and the love story between Zhinü and Niulang where the bird created a bridge between the galaxy.

Blog Exercise 10-Final
Through the amazing work of my fellow classmates, I have chosen Cassandra’s levitation of her sister to critique. While reading the artist statement behind Cassandra ’s piece, I believe that it captures the uncanny and the vague ideal of the interpretation behind the narratives of the work. After hearing her present the work to the class, I believe that it suits well for the work that she created. When seeing the piece I had many thoughts on what was happening in the work such as the physics in the world is being bend into an unreality feel, possession of a ghoul and many more perception of the piece. In addition, the editing of the photo is very clean that helps with the uncanny feeling of the work where it makes me feel a bit anxious just from viewing the piece. Finally, in my opinion, I believe that Cassandra has done a very well clean work where, she is able to create the anxious feeling, similar to the one shown in class where the boy fell from the tree. However, through the photography rules that I remembered in high school, which is a bit of a nitpicky with the work since the tree behind the subject, gives off a wrong and inappropriate impression but, I enjoyed the work since there is so many idealistic behind the whole work.

Final Project Proposal
Folklores are mythical when being told through many generations. I went with option 3 for my final project where I deal with light box as the base of the concept for interaction with it. For my concept, I want to portray folklores that I enjoyed listening and learning lots about. The reason is that I know that folklores from generation are myths and does exist in the world. I  desire to incorporate my idea of the folklore in a light box whereas I can display different stories while trying to envelop the audience to feel like they are apart of it. In addition, I believe that having some song playing would improve the experience when the audience view the light up work.
I have found an artist pair that shared the same form of art that I desired to work on which is a light box. The first piece that is colourful is from these people called Hari and Deepti, I tried to find the name for this piece but I couldn’t fine one. They specialize in paper cutouts of various nature and some unordinary pieces. They create the focus worked from multiple layers of paper with very intricate cutting while having RGB LED lights strip to set the mood and draws in their viewers.
Finally, I will make my own shadowbox to contain the whole concept that kept in my head as well as placing aluminium tape on the inside to reflect the lighting. Next, I would design the display, hand cut them and assemble it together in a sequence. Once that is finished I will insert it into the frame and sealing it with glue to prevent it to fall out. I will then adhere the lights and figure out where the wiring will go. Further on I’ve wanted to add some symbolic from the culture of the folklore so, I wanted to place some origami either inside the frame or on the top. After I placed all those elements, I wanted to finally, add music to the piece to pull it all together to allow the viewers to be fully submerse in the world.
Here is the list what I believe will need for the piece:
wood
form board
led lights
glue gun
speakers
mp3 player
origami paper
printer to print large components
thick paper
There might be more but, won’t know for sure till later on with the project.

Project 3- Artist Statement
For project 3, I have seen some videos and images where a person repeat themselves multiple times either interacting with themselves. Through being inspired by those people, I had a concept in my mind where I wanted to do a panorama shot with myself as the main subject. From that concept, I wanted to relate it to identity and how a periods of time, it goes through changes. The first change is the growing up, i have myself holding a laptop with a photo of myself as a child. This represents growing up however, fearing of being an adult I try to stay youthful by acting childish. Next, I was wearing a mask, through this representation, I wanted to to represent the change in appearance due to Vietnamese people, are not appreciated on their culture and try to be like others. Moving on in the panorama, you will see me holding a stuff kitten. Through holding the kitten I wanted to represent the expectation of my parents and society whereas, males are portrayed as handsome but never cute. Therefore, I tried to be more more cute then being handsome. Further in the photo, I am holding two umbrellas to represent the gender confusion that I faced in my childhood. I find both gender has its own ups and down and being confuse I was not sure if I am a male or female since I act both feminine and masculine. Finally, the last one is myself in kind of like a commando combat gears that I have worn in Human versus Zombie. The reason behind this is due to being close with my mother, sisters, grandmother and my female cousins a lot, I act more feminine than masculine so, I want to represent that I’m more masculine since in my culture portray it in a horrific manner as well in society.

Artist Statment
When you and your cousin born in the same year, they share a special and strong bond. This is seen in my relation with my cousin. We have been together from thick and thin, up and down, and through elementary and high school. However, being there for each other cannot last long in the present day. Through our bond deteriorating I want to represent that through these glitch of a photo that my cousin and I took together in high school. I got the idea from Professor Adam by using the code in both photos and swapping them with each other. From swapping the codes with each other, this is the outcome of both photos. Finaly, in my opinion, I believe that it shows what I wanted to represent, both my cousin and I are not together for about two years now and our bond is strong yet it is deteriorating slowly as we both grow older, going to different schools and moving forward into the future.

Blog Exercise 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both images, I wanted to take photos that were outside and try to bring them inside. For the top, I wanted to edit the tower to make it look like a model on a plate. Next, the second photo, I wanted to experiment with using a pot for plants and trying to make my own hand to have a bottomless pit. Finally, they both have a bit of meaning to me where the top, I believe was my last trip I had with my deceased art teacher and the second is the bottomless potential in learning

Through my choices on the two opposing subject for the blog exercise 3, I chose to distinguish and dispel that cardistry (image) is completely different from magic (video). Cardisty allows the person to have fun, impress their friends, hobby for passing time, and many more. However, for magic, it is about the creation of the illusion where they impossible can be bend into the reality of this world. When I chose to do the difference between cardistry and magic is because they are both two different world but, can join to work together to help create a world where we can bring the joy of card flourish to impress and magic to bond with audience and develop a fantasy world. Finally, due to both my themes, it does not have a strong difference between each other but, through the collage and video, it will bring the viewer closer to a mystical world that magician help form.
Indexical- is the expression that is perceive from the relation of the photograph and the original object that was captured

GIF Project- Final Product- Part 2
I chose to do a photo and a drawing gif together to create an interaction between reality and fantasy. This gives the viewers that art form is something that artist interact with enjoyment. I chose to use an adorable panda as my drawing in the interaction due to myself loving adorable animals/drawing. I wanted to interact with the piece through poking its cheek with the bear being startled but blushed.
Through the article, the writer talks about how GIF is a controversy in the art world. They talked about how displaying GIF should be seen on the web rather than in public. However, it was described in the article that seeing GIF on the web is not special. I believe that it is incorrect since that art itself is special and people that create GIFs is creating a one of a kind work. Finally, I chose to do an interaction GIF with a character I designed, this is due to GIF being an interactive art style so I was inspired to create a literal interaction.
