One Hundred and Eight – Animated Patterns by Nils Völker  One Hundred and Eight reminds me of a work I mentioned earlier about Zimoun, using the same idea of repetition and easy-to-find materials. However unlike Zimoun’s whereby the rhythm is consistent, the different sets of rhythms in this work creates a visual as well as audio performance, generating and mimicking different wave effects, like that of the ocean.

Light Kinetics, in the loop by espadaysantacruz studio  The form is the first thing that catches my attention. Aside from resembling a part of a roller coaster, the form is also somewhat balanced although it is suspended. I also find it amazing how such a light, haptic interaction could generate different patterns of light that goes around the loop, giving the user full control of the time and hence, patterns that they can generate as well. The bulbs lighting up one after another also gives the user an immersive visual experience.

.fluid – A reactive surface by Hannes Kalk  This interaction is similar to that of the singing paper created by Roots, mentioned in a previous post. However, the difference is that this work makes use of the volatile nature of liquids and user interaction to generate different textured surfaces within the same medium, pushing the limits of pattern generation to a physical, interactive level.

Shadowplay by Futurism The fusion of analog and technological methods in this piece of work is really innovative. It creates an interaction using a simple action and function, although one that is not the most practical for daily use, but works as an interesting display piece. The concept also ties back to the olden day methods of using a sun dial to tell the time. It incorporates a smart play on light and shadows, especially with the use of contrast between illumination and darkness.

Continuel Lumière Cylindre, Palais de Tokyo (2013) by Julio Le Parc The dancing rays of light are beautiful; they transition from one to another so quickly and yet so gently.  It is amazing how reflections of light could generate this gradual animation of patterns, like something created using Processing software. The use of the natural properties of the material is also really smart, and is something that I would hope to achieve in my works in the future.

Senses of the Future (2017) by TOKUJIN YOSHIOKA x LG  Exhibited at the Milano Design Week, this futuristic-looking installation rethinks the use of LCD screens and also imagines a world where digital technology takes over.  One can only imagine the experience of being in this light and dreamy environment, being illuminated by the panels while one is sitting on the chair, giving one a sense of floating within an abstract and dystopian space. The emptiness complements the element of light well, such that each one of the chairs could also possibly function as its own art piece.

Zimoun : Compilation Video 3.7 (2017) by Zimoun A video compilation of Zimoun’s work, all playing with the same idea of repetition and also possibly his love for using motors and basic materials. Every installation seems to be a masterpiece on its own, and Zimoun himself (or maybe the motors) can be compared to that of a musical composer. Aside from the soothing sounds that his work produces, noticing the subtle movements also adds on to the user’s experience, possibly similar or mimicking a similar experience to that of watching the waves crash on beaches, or the trees rustling in the wind.
