Nice interview exploring the process and development of the work of Lolo and Sosaku since 2004.
"We were doing installations and festivals, and we got very tired because we needed 24 hours at least to set up and four hours for soundcheck. It was not easy."
"We are like the mechanics for the artist machines"
"One writer asked us what we really like most. Sosaku said insects, I said trees. And then she said, but this doesn’t relate to your work? But in our work there is transformation. There is change. There is growing. Trees are open to change without their control, and insects are very similar to machines: it looks like they don’t have feelings. They don’t have expression in the faces. They also are transforming. Many of them change colours or change totally, as butterflies do."
"Our work is basically investigation – investigation of movement and shapes – but something is building up there. You are right. We are starting to see it, slowly. We just need more time to be always following the mystery."
Now, let's take a step back to my future sound piece.
Working with sound is not something that I've tried before. At least, not considering it as part of a project. Personally, sound pieces/installations are very engaging and they create a wonderful atmosphere and connection with the public.
When I moved to UK I found myself missing everything and everyone and, certainly, typical sounds, the music, the birds singing and the silence. Oh my God the silence... I never find the same kind of silence here. It is quite a complicated topic to consider. How can silence be different from places to places if is just... silence?
Silence is a reflection of the environment that surrounds us. Did ever anyone find a completly empty sound? What is that like? I don't know. For me silence is more about quietude that you find when you don't worry, quietude that you find when you don't have no one or nothing to disturb you. Because you keep listening. You keep listening the background sounds of the traffic, the ambulance, the trains, the rain... Even in the most quiet places, you still listen the birds, the squirrels running, the leaves of the trees dancing to the movement of the wind. Doens't matter the hour, doesn't matter the sun or rain. They will always be there and they will always feel like silence...

Once upon a time,
there was a Chinese fishing boat 3089…
The boat crossed territorial sea,
so it was detained by the Taiwan Coast Guard.
Little by little… people almost forgot that it existed.
Unconsciously…Purple morning glory flowers have been covering its wooden body.
They have been its only companion for many years.
This is it !
3089 had been lying quietly in the recycling station of Kinmen for more than half a century!
It is waiting to meet you, him(her) and me…
.
This is an installation artwork about time & space/ memory & flow.
The work unfolds through the old wooden fishing boat abandoned with a history of more than half a century.
It includes visual and auditory components that bridge the local nature, humanities, fishing culture, and human lives of Kinmen to form a unique story. Human and nature jointly shape the landscape of time. The accumulation of time and space has carved a sculpture artwork. Let us observe and explore this world with a childlike curiosity and naïveté.
