Today our back gate blew open today and this idiot escaped into the front yard, where he proceeded to stand in the middle of the street and yell at passersby until Colin heard him and came outside. He then tried to run back through the back gate (which was closed), then ran around to the other back gate (which was also closed), and then finally ran straight in the front door (which was open because that’s where he was being shepherded the whole time). Anyway now he’s laying on my lap asleep and I just love him so much I’m so glad he’s so dedicated to guarding our house that he couldn’t be arsed to actually run away.

My husband came back into the bedroom this morning to tell me that (at 0830) our dog had already pooped 3 times and he was worried because “it looked weird, the wrong color.” Lou is acting completely normal otherwise. We realize after a beat that he spent most of yesterday begging to go out in the yard so he could hang out near the planter boxes which I had just prepped for planting the day before. This motherfucker has been eating compost, belly full of dirt all night, pooping straight compost this morning. Dogs, man.

My problem with the new Thorns kit isn’t that it’s ugly (it is), but that it costs 200 American dollars. In the year of our lord 2023?! Honestly.

Happy 1-year-medicated-for-my-depression-anniversary to me. I wish I did it sooner. I’ve been depressed for a long time— some stretches worse than others, but always bad in the winter— but I never thought I was “sick enough” for meds because even at my worst I was mostly able to function. Going through talk therapy a few years ago helped, but it still felt like sometimes the floor would fall out from under me. Getting on SSRIs felt like putting the bumpers on during the bowling game of my life. The principles of the game are the same but suddenly it’s so much harder to go off the rails. And that is great in itself, but it has also led to me trusting myself a lot more, because I don’t feel so much like my brain is a half step from going off an edge I can’t see, and that in turn has made it much easier for me to manage my anxiety. It’s not all sunshine and roses out here in post-pandemic healthcare-provider mid-thirties land, but I’m grateful for this year and where it’s brought me.

Felt like yelling into the abyss and needed the abyss to feel a little more abyss-like, so here I am.

Wondering if having neglected but not deleted this corner of my internet may have led to it being what I need right now?

I finished an incredible book yesterday and I’m having a lot of feelings about it. Unfortunately talking to someone about a book they haven’t read feels awfully close to explaining your dreams to someone, in that no one actually cares, sorry. But yall. Thistlefoot by Gennarose Nethercott. I’m stuck on how she wove the old folklore tales into how she told this new story in the present-day. The way she addressed generational trauma and the privilege of forgetting. The profound otherness stirred so completely into the normalcy of our world. A queen. 5/5.
