To Audition, or Not Audition

“Are you thinking about auditioning, Patrick?” Twyla asked as she handed Patrick his and David's lunch to-go. 

“Hmm?” Patrick looked up, folded the flyer, and shoved it into his back pocket. 

“Cabaret. You should audition. You'd be great!"

“I’m not an actor, Twyla.”

“But you are a singer!"

Patrick tried working on invoices for most of the afternoon, but had a difficult time concentrating. He pulled out the flyer and thought about all the school musicals he wanted to participate in, but didn’t. 

“I’m auditioning for Cabaret,” he told David when he emerged from the back. 

“Good for you, honey!”

“What? You don’t think he would appreciate something from Insane Clown Posse?”

“No. No, I do not.”

“Fine! I can’t believe you talked him into having an Open Mic Night. Now I’m going to miss him being all twitchy and making all sorts of faces!”

“That’s why it has to be the right song.”

“Okay. A favorite of his is Tina Turner’s The Best. One night I had to hear him go on and on about how it’s the perfect love song. Unless that’s not-”

“No. That’s exactly what I’m going for.”

He told David he didn’t have to come. 

David was not a fan of baseball, but Patrick could not help but hope he may change his mind. He wasn’t sure exactly why it was so important that David attend, although just once he would like to play for someone he really cared about.  

The sun was just beginning to set, bathing the field in a soft hazy glow of reds, yellows, and oranges. As he made his way to bat, he saw David, dressed in all black, waving to him.  

Patrick waved back, and proceeded to hit a home run.

Flower Power Friday (On a Saturday)

I went to Denver last week for a solo trip to see one of my favorite singer/songwriters who does not tour.

The morning before my show I went to the Denver Botanic Garden.

So, so beautiful and so very peaceful. So needed.

Even saw a bunny and they let me take their picture!

Fanfiction is so silly. I am playing with my dolls and people are coming over to watch. Some of them even clap and give me compliments. And when I'm done playing, I can go and watch other people play with their dolls.

The Ticket/ The Date

It's June, which means a new character (Patrick Brewer) to write drabbles for! These two go together, so...

The Ticket

Patrick was bored. 

He’s been sitting at his desk with nothing to do for the last two hours. He opened the top drawer to sharpen some pencils when a small slip of paper caught his eye. 

B13 

David Rose, the man who handed him B13. 

He picked the ticket up and thumbed it between each of his fingers, and thought about that dark-haired man. A warmth filled his chest like he had never felt before. 

“Patrick?”

“Yeah?”

“David’s business license arrived today. If you’re not too busy, can you let him know it’s ready, please?” Ray asked. 

“Yes, I can.”

The Date

Patrick stood in front of his closet, hair still damp from his shower, towel wrapped around his waist. He silently cursed himself for not packing more clothes. 

He wanted to look good tonight. 

It's just dinner. 

But it wasn't. 

It was a date, and he wanted to look good for David. He wanted this night to be special for David. 

He also wanted it to be special for himself. 

After choosing the right shirt, he looked at himself in the mirror. Something was missing. 

He went back to the closet and pulled out his navy blazer.

Now he was ready.

I wrote this for me, because it wouldn't get out of my head. I'm sharing it with you because it's fun and I want to fangirl about it with someone who's read it.

This shouldn't be that difficult to understand. Every book will appeal to different people. But if you never write the book and share it, you will never get to look back on it and say "I wrote that."

Every book is a learning process. With each one you write, you get better. Even if the only person who reads it is you, you did that. Be proud of yourself. Not everyone makes it even that far.

“Fine! David, I need you to be my partner for the Schitt's Creek Charades Competition. This is the first year I can partner up with someone who knows what they're doing. I have a chance to win this year! Happy now?”

“So you need me.”

“Ugh! Yes, I need you. You'll do it?”

What Was She Thinking?

Stevie poured herself another glass of wine, leaned against her counter, and flipped through the Cabaret script. 

What was Mrs. Rose thinking? I'm not an actress or a singer! 

She figured rather than sit and lament on why she wasn't good enough for Emir, she might as well read what Cabaret was all about. 

Inside the cover page, Stevie recognized Mrs. Rose’s handwriting. 

I truly believe if anyone can encapsulate the darkness within our dear Sally and capture her spirit, it is you, Stevie.  

Stevie wiped away the tears from her face, and opened the script to the first page.
