When lifelong dancer Lauren Smith was first applying to colleges, choosing a school with a dance program was a must. She was drawn to the University of Idaho because it offered a Bachelor of Science in dance. That had Smith sold, and she moved from Coeur d’Alene to Moscow to find her new home in UI’s College of Education as a double major in dance and exercise science.
“I love that both my programs are in the same department,” says the 22-year-old, “because typically dance is a Bachelor of Arts, but here it’s a Bachelor of Sciences.”

Okaidja and Shokoto
African Music, Drum, and Dance Ensemble
Saturday, February 13th at 7:30PM at the
UI Administration Building Auditorium
"...a spicy fusion of spirited African music and dance!"
On Saturday, February 13th at 7:30pm the Shokoto Ensemble will perform at the University of Idaho Auditorium as part of Black History Month, co-sponsored by Festival Dance & Performing Arts and the University of Idaho. Shokoto's music and dance style offers a dynamic fusion of rhythms from Ghana, Brazil, Cuba, Peru, and the Deep South. "We have a solid foundation in music from Ghana," says director Okaidja Afroso, "but we push the envelope to present both powerful and soulful drumming, vocals, and dancing to take the audience on a unique and unforgettable journey."
Tickets for the performance are available through the Festival Dance Office (208-883-3267), at Paradise Ridge CD's in downtown Moscow, and at the door. Prices are $16 general admission, $14 for students, and $10 for children under 12. UI students will be admitted free and student tickets are available at the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
While in Moscow, Shokoto will also present an educational program entitled, "Dancing Feet and Talking Drums," for 3rd and 4th grade students from Moscow, Pullman, Colton, Troy and Potlatch, and a program for Moscow High School students. They will also teach a dance master class for the UI Movement Sciences Dance Program. Their residency is assisted by grants from the Idaho Commission on the Arts, U.S. Bank Foundation and the Latah County Community Foundation.

University of Idaho Dance Program presents their annual fall main stage concert, Rising Momentum Nov 5-7 at 7:30pm and Nov 8 at 2:00pm in the Hartung Theatre.
Anna Keller will feature a contemporary ballet that highlights the power and grace of the form. The work is titled "One Hundred and Three" Keller says of her work,
"There are times when I hear music and it creates its own entity within my mind full of colors, shapes, textures and connections. The richness of the sound or the specific instrument will paint across my mind in different colors and eventually begin to pulse through my veins. Each note or quality of sound will become its own dancer that resonates through space mapping out patterns that are only seen for a brief moment. It changes you. These are my thoughts, organizing, disconnecting, being influenced by the surroundings and fighting to magnify but never truly finding completion."
Don't miss this amazing performance and come see Rising Momentum! Nov 5-7 at 7:30pm and Nov 8 at 2:00pm in the Hartung Theatre.
