...But the king would make an astonishing recovery and return to public life in triumph and when journalists asked the Royal doctors what was the secret cure that has saved his majesty they replied it was the Queen (Mary), she refused to let him die.

This photo was taken in 1935, a few months before the death of George V. Here he and his wife Mary (on the left) look like one of those classic elderly couples that I think everyone has found at least once in their life in the city's park. They are next to each other and I'll be honest, although they look relaxed I think George was a little tired in the photo, because he was resting his head on his cane. Mary is placing her hand on her husband's thigh, almost as if to support him which means they probably had a lot of confidence. I love the details in this photo, George and Mary look so good together, they really look like a couple in love.💖

The Abdication Crisis, which reached its crescendo in the days ahead, seemingly brought Mary and her second son Albert (George VI) closer. His anxiety and grief over taking on the role of sovereign and losing his brother forced him to turn to Mary, which in turn forced her to offer what emotional solace she was capable. At one point, he completely broke down in front of her once he realized they had reached the point of no return. He put his head on her shoulder and cried like a baby for an hour. He had a very heavy break down.
In my opinion this tragic and certainly very sad episode such as the abdication of Albert's brother strengthened the mother-son relationship of Queen Mary and Albert (George VI).
In his moment of desperation Albert immediately went to a person who perhaps he didn't know, but who he hoped could comfort him, that is his mother, who despite her reputation as a "cold, rigid, emotionless" person, was able to support her son in such a difficult moment for him.

Edward VIII's letter to his mother Mary just after his abdication
Most darling Mama
It is difficult to write much this evening but I want you to have these few lines from me to say God bless you for all your understanding throughout these last trying days and especially for your sweetness to me last night.
I loved our last few minutes together and at last being able to bring dear Papa into out talk. We were different in many ways and yet you know how devoted I was to him and I cried when you said he was human.
It would have been hard for him to understand what I have done – you do so much better and I love you for it and hate to think of the strain that this last month has been to you. As I told you again last night I have known for two years that I could not carry on without Wallis and so my mind was so firmly made up and that made any decision easier.
It was a big thing to do but I know it will be best for all in the end and Bertie will make a fine King and will be able to carry on without any upset and will find that I have left the Crown and the throne as Papa left it on the same high level it has maintained for so many centuries.
The only terribly hard thing for me is that I can’t see Wallis until April 27th but she and I can take that separation with the knowledge of the great love, happiness and companionship which we are so sure we can give each other. We do want to return to England as soon as is convenient to Bertie and suitable to the country, for we know there is no other worth living in.
But you and he also know that we will never do so without his asking us. We will await his word and if we can help him and you in any way it will only increase our happiness.
Oh! Mama darling my heart is so full tonight. Full of lovely and sacred feelings for Wallis and devotion to you my mother who has been as grand as she has throughout this crisis. I will write again soon and until then God bless you.
Always your most devoted and loving,
David

AN EPISODE FROM THE UK ABDICATION CRISIS IN 1936 On November 24 1936, David was summoned for tea. Mary begged him to consider his brother, Bertie, who had not been trained to be king and whose health wasn’t robust. She claimed the burden would kill him. The argument that George had once been the second son and proved himself up to the challenge was disregarded. But Mary’s angle of entry was poorly thought out and spoke to her lack of understanding for her son. That she wished him to ease Bertie’s life only made David all the more bitter that she thought nothing of leaving the weight of the crown on him. That she thought nothing of preserving Bertie’s happiness at the expense of his own.

"Dear Eddy is a dear, good boy ” wrote Queen Victoria to Mary. He was not, and by now Mary was realizing exactly what she was taking on. Albert Victor spent two days with the Tecks when they returned from Windsor, during which time she cried to her mother, unsure whether she could go through with it. Her mother’s practical response was that she quite simply didn’t have a choice.
Knowing this makes me feel sad for Mary, but I'm happy that she ended up marrying George, Eddy's younger brother who was more like her shy, reserved and introverted way of being.

just as sex without consent is rape, then euthanasia without consent is murder. Consent is important. So I think that HM King George V was murdered. Do you think Queen Mary would have given consent?
No. The doctor explained why he did it, which was he wanted the King's death to be announced in the prestigious newspapers. He felt comforted that the family didn't expect him to miraculously save the King's life (like he had before), because they expressed their concern for the King, by saying that they just wanted him to comfortable. Wanting a love one to be comfortable before death is not code for euthanasia.
I just think the moral of the story is that they allowed Lord Penn to have too much authority over the King's health, which resulted in such an odd medical choice.

These photos look so similar! In the first photo there is King George V and the other two grandsons of Queen Victoria, while in the second photo there is Queen Mary (the wife of George V) with her brothers. These photos are almost funny to look at 😅😄, and they are also more informal photos than many of the commons ones of the time imo!

I found another photo where they are very close... some people says that George V and his wife Mary were "stiff and cold" persons, but I dont think so, or at least, not when they were out of the public's eyes.
