HSE FOCUS ON WHEELED LOADING SHOVELS
Tumblr media
Introduction
Wheeled loading shovels are a versatile piece of machinery that can be utilized in a variety of industries, including mining, port building, sand and gravel transportation, and more. The main purpose of a wheeled loading shovels are to transport big volumes of material across long distances. The delivery of soil or extracted products from an underground mine are frequently done with a wheeled loading shovels.
It can also be used to carry bulk materials, such as rocks and dirt, from one site to another. It is critical that both the operator and the pedestrian have a clear situational awareness when utilizing the wheeled loader. When you’re not paying attention, the wheel can run over pebbles or uneven surfaces, causing a jackknife or an accident with property damage. And, in the worst-case scenario, a fatality.
HSE on wheeled loading shovels
There are two notions that will be discussed. The first is a general overview and knowledge of the Health Safety Environment for practice. The final one will look at what the United Kingdom’s Health and Safety Executive has to say about the matter at hand. These will generally cover Inspection and Pre-Start-Up Procedure, Starting and operating the wheel loader, shutting down and parking procedures, and maintenance and repair procedures.
Health Safety Environment
Falling and expelled objects, slipping and falling, cutting, pinching, and crushing, burning and explosions, inadequate lighting/visibility, poor traffic management, and so on are all examples of primary hazards. One, a combination, or additional controls may be used to minimize or decrease the risks connected with all hazards related with Wheel loading shovels.
Personal protective equipment, pre-startup inspections, scheduled inspections and maintenance, safe operating and working procedures, employee safety training, and operator and maintenance training are all examples of safe operating and working processes. Keeping in mind legal obligations, best practices, and guidance papers at all times.
Health Safety Executive
(Health and Safety Executive, 2021) “Wheeled loading shovels have been involved in nine deadly vehicle-pedestrian crashes in the last four years. Six of them were in the garbage and recycling industry, while the others dealt with wood chips. Some occurred as a result of limited forward visibility, while others occurred as a result of reversing. Some machines had larger capacity buckets installed, which reduced forward view even further.”
In October 2021, the HSE produced a bulletin on wheeled loading shovels in garbage and recycling in response to this, with advice for reducing/eliminating accidents in this category.
Wheeled loaders – 11 Safety points
Ascertain that everyone on site is aware that the device has begun to function. All available communication channels are used to send out an alert. Any sirens or horns that are universally recognized.
Shortcuts and wire connecting are not permitted when starting the engine according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Observe the control panel and monitor the display for any aberrant indications or error codes once the engine is running; review the machine’s instruction manual. Before operating the Wheeled Loading Shovel, the manual must be registered as an official document, and all operators must sign a reading record. The simplest solution is to include it in the operator’s induction criteria to ensure familiarization.
Know the emergency controls.
Know the Load.
Know the Road.
Know the weather.
Know who is competent.
When operating over uneven terrain or with limited vision, reduce the wheel loader’s travel speed to a minimum.
Allow plenty of time and space for the loaded wheel loader to come to a complete stop.
While the engine is running, never leave the machine for any reason.
Why is the safety of operators important?
The most crucial component of a Wheel Loader is the operator. While the most important consideration in the construction of a wheel loader is safety. The equipment will be worthless without operators. Operators can’t accomplish their tasks if they don’t have the right equipment. There are numerous things that can go wrong with a wheeled loading shovel, resulting in injury to workers or anybody close.
To prevent this from happening, every equipment must be constructed with safety in mind. Equipment safety regulations differ based on the sort of operation it performs. Construction equipment and heavy gear, for example, are subject to more stringent safety regulations than office equipment such as copiers and desktop printers. Because all other lives depend on it, the safety of a wheeled loading shovel operator is critical.
Risk assessment and Guidance for wheeled loaders
A risk assessment should consider the risks and hazards that are inherent in the workplace, as well as the controls that have been implemented to eliminate or reduce these risks. Before utilizing a loader, it is critical for an operator to conduct a risk assessment.
The operator should consider what could go wrong in order to identify risks and choose how to manage them. According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), all plant users must be aware of the dangers associated with operating the plant and ensure that they are appropriately trained and competent to use it safely.
Conclusion
When it comes to Wheeled Loading shovels and other operating heavy equipment, safety is a top priority. These equipment can cause serious injury or even death if they are not handled properly. The usage of wheeled loading shovels without proper planning might be fatal. The purpose of this safety notice is to remind duty holders who operate these devices to analyze and actively manage the risk of vehicle-pedestrian collisions.

12 TIPS: WHY VENTILATION SYSTEMS CAN ELIMINATE THE RISK OF COVID-19 INFECTION AT WORK
Tumblr media
Introduction
COVID-19 viruses travel in the air ,which is why Ventilation systems can eliminate the risk of COVID-19 infection at work. Risks and issues attributed to poor ventilation systems in the workplace has been widely discussed in health and safety. Eliminating the risk of COVID-19 infection through ventilation systems has also become so important in todays workplace.
This means that, there has to be measures to enhance clean air in the workplace especially within offices and other indoor/enclosed areas like vehicles . Apart from coronavirus there are infections associated with poor ventilation. In (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2021) headaches, weariness, difficulty concentrating, and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs have all been linked to poor indoor air quality. There are a chain of benefits to be derived from a well-ventilated workplace.
COVID-19 and Ventilation – The Basics
Coronaviruses are a type of virus that causes common colds, as well as various respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders. A virus is a little infectious agent that can only replicate inside live species’ cells. Viruses must employ the cell’s reproductive machinery to manufacture copies of themselves in order to proliferate. Viruses aren’t living things, hence they can’t reproduce outside of living cells. To multiply, they rely on the cells they infect. An increased risk of COVID-19 infection is unavoidable in poorly ventilated environments. As a result, proper ventilation is required.
Consider a ventilation system as what moves air between the inside and outside of a structure. The purpose of ventilation is to keep the indoor air quality as good as possible. Ventilation purges the indoor environment of odors, contaminants, and excess moisture. It can also improve indoor air quality by diluting or removing undesired sources of pollutants. But for purposes of this article, written procedures are inclusive of Ventilation systems. As the two represent Administrative and engineering controls.” Of course, at various levels, all other controls come into play.
COVID-19 Transmission
The transmission of coronavirus reiterates how good ventilation systems can eliminate the risk of infections as far as the work environment is concerned. “According to current information, the virus transmits primarily amongst people who are in close proximity to one another, often within 1 meter (short-range). When virus-containing aerosols or droplets are breathed or come into direct contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth, a person can get infected. The virus can also spread in cramped and/or poorly ventilated interior environments, where people tend to spend longer periods of time. This is due to the fact that aerosols stay suspended in the air or travel more than 1 meter (long-range)” (WHO, 2020).
“Someone who has coronavirus breathes out small particles (aerosols) of the virus. Adequate ventilation reduces how much virus is in the air, so it reduces the risk of breathing in the virus” (Health and Safety Executive, 2021)
What you can do!
Office Spaces, Training or Conference Room, Changing rooms, Vehicles are commonly occupied by workers. Perhaps a Confined Space can also be a topic for further discussion.
Inspection
Walk around the workplace and try to identify all locations being occupied by workers. This includes store rooms.
Risk assessment
Carry out a ventilation based risk assessment. Include any opportunities within the primary coverage of your risk assessment and capture other hazards that may not be directly involved. To have a good Risk Assessment make room to identify existing/new legislations, best practices and guidance documents on Ventilation Systems.
Ventilation Monitors
A CO2 monitor as the name implies will not solve the problem of removing contaminants from the air. Neither will a CO2 monitor clean the air. But for the discussion, a good C02 monitor should be able to tell you if you have ventilation problems. With this information, one can take necessary steps to enhance ventilation systems at the workplace.
Natural Air
This passes as a very efficient way to get good ventilation for indoor workplace use. Most people may prefer to lock up themselves in a cold air conditioner. But even if the reason is attributed to an unfavorable hot weather, an air conditioner will only allow air to recirculate. Meaning workers will be in the same quality of air assuming it has been contaminated with coronavirus. In this case, the virus will only thrive. Simply opening the windows and doors a few hours can be helpful.
Air Filtration Systems
This can also be an option to improve ventilation to eliminate or reduce the risk of coronavirus infections. However these units will perform at best where natural ventilation methods are combined.
Mechanical Air
Having fans and ducts bring in fresh air from outside. It is very important to understand the structure and design of your workplace to know which mechanical method will be best for your ventilation issues.
Train Workers
Traditionally, a training aimed at increasing awareness on a topic such as ventilation and coronavirus will go a long way in effectively implementing your organizations specific Ventilation plan. Training must communicate all the hazards, risks, controls that apply and must be clear and understandable to all attendees.
COVID-19 Control Measures
To eliminate or reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection in the workplace, a health and safety department or responsible interested parties should take note of other preventive measures employed to reduce or eliminate the risk of coronavirus infection in the workplace.
For example, social distancing, regular washing of hands under clean running water, the use of approved alcohol based hand-sanitizers, wearing of the nose mask, vaccination, health surveillance, health and safety policy (covid-19), disinfection of work areas etc. A host of others may come up in the future owing to the fact that, COVID-19 is still being researched.
Conclusion
It is impossible to ignore the importance of ventilation in preventing coronavirus infection. Employers and health and safety departments can help guarantee that workers are not exposed to coronavirus infections by using the correct ventilation equipment, systems, and performing routine preventative maintenance. It’s also crucial to keep your ductwork clean and clear of obstacles. It’s time to get a ventilation plan for your company if you don’t already have one.

How to Effectively Manage Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Safety
Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Safety
Tumblr media
Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Safety is one of the most important things in every organization today. Diversity and Inclusion means that everyone on the team has different needs. If you’re working in a team, try making sure everyone’s voice is heard and they are able to contribute towards health and safety freely. Identity, equity and belonging also moves with Diversity and Inclusion. They intertwine in everything about Diversity and Inclusion.
A good way to apply Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Safety is to establish a pattern where the more introverted members of your staff feel safe sharing their opinion on matters of health and safety, while the louder members can chime in with theirs. Since health and safety information can be gathered through observations, the fact is, everyone should be given an opportunity without any restriction.
Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Safety Today
In today’s world of business, diversity and inclusion are two of the most talked-about subjects. Companies are learning how to establish an inclusive workplace and are looking for ways to improve diversity. For both employers and employees, diversity and inclusion can be beneficial. They have the ability to strengthen bonds, enhance engagement, and increase revenues.
Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Safety on the other hand, is aimed at reducing risks from a health and safety standpoint. Risks that have an influence on the health and safety of interested parties such as employees, contractors, and anybody else who is directly or indirectly dependent on a firm.
Diversity and Inclusion in Health and Safety should be considered from the start of the employment process, during interviews, and throughout the employee onboarding process. An organization should think about how to include a diversity of people in every department of the company. The organization can only grow if it keeps developing its members and embracing positive change.
Diversity
Tumblr media
Diversity is all about having different people in the organization. Different people in terms of gender, age, race, religion etc. People with different voices, and views who are united by company values.
“Let us have 3 Female health and Safety Officers and 3 Male health and Safety Officers”: this is diversity. And the example can be associated with gender balance.
Inclusion
Tumblr media
Inclusion is about creating the conditions for different people in the organization to thrive.
Systems in the Organization
It is also important that the organization has in place systems that will promote diversity and inclusion as far as health and safety is concerned. Think of how a worker in a wheelchair will be evacuated during an emergency. Will he or she be doing it alone? Will there be automated systems?  Or perhaps someone or some people would be assigned to play that role.
Also think of how to provide social amenities that are user friendly to them and to consider their entry and exit out of the company each and every day.
So these are just a few areas to consider. You may also have to display signs and posters which also tells the enforcement agencies that your facility is friendly to persons living with disability and others alike. There are HSE  resources to help you.
 Benefits and Applications Today
A more diverse workforce and a more inclusive workplace will boost employee engagement which leads to valuable discussions, decisions and outcomes for health and safety.
Consider a policy on anti-harassment and discrimination. Perhaps borne out of steps to prevent workplace violence related issues which is a subject in health and safety. So it talks about the commitment of senior management, examples of behaviors that are unacceptable and which may lead to reprimand following investigations of the situation.
Have you seen the structure of Job Adverts in recent times? Some may indicate that the positions are only open to females. There are others that also that encourage females to apply. Personal investigations revealed that it is usually so because the hiring managers seeks some gender balance within their respective organizations.
The issue of gender balance is that of diversity. So you have an organization where there are a good number of males and same for females. Allowing females to lead health and safety drills in a company that was male dominated is an act of inclusion. So simple. Black or white, we are all the same. We respect the views and voices of everyone. As a matter of fact, it is a critical part of health and safety.
We are safe when we are all on the same page and communication works effectively.  According to the HSE in (HSE , 2020)“Factors like race, gender, disability, age and work pattern may affect people's health and safety in the workplace - and sometimes health and safety is used as a false excuse to justify discriminating against certain groups of workers”
Smart Policy Sample pointing to Diversity and Inclusion
As an organization we believe that Diversity and Inclusion is critical for our overall success. In view of this, the Management of ABC expects that each employee embraces the equality to make sure that all parties feel a sense of belonging to work with ABC Company at all times.
The company prohibits not only unlawful harassment, but also unprofessional and discourteous actions. Accordingly, racial, ethnic, religious, age, sexual orientation, sexual or other inappropriate remarks, slurs or jokes will not be tolerated. Any employee who feels harassed by a supervisor, manager, co-worker, subordinate, client or other person is encouraged to tell the offending individual(s) that their behavior is offensive and/or unwelcome and to stop.
Management of ABC will subject all issues that goes against this policy to serious investigations and all actions shall be applied accordingly.
 Conclusion
Unfortunately, we still live in a world where there are issues with diversity and inclusion. Luckily, there's a lot you can do to help promote diversity and inclusion yourself. Safety Begins with you. By looking at your own biases, creating more inclusive spaces for people who are underrepresented in your organization, and making sure that the voices of those who have traditionally been silenced are heard, you can start to make serious strides toward improving the culture of health and safety in your workplace.

Which Health and Safety Qualification Is Best for Healthcare Workers?
Tumblr media
Introduction
Healthcare workers are exposed to a number of health and safety hazards in the course of their work, from bacteria to viruses, chemicals and more. To ensure that every worker is protected against these dangers, make sure you have the best health and safety qualification for healthcare workers. What quickly comes to mind are NEBOSH Health and Safety, NVQ Health and Safety, IOSH Health and Safety and OSHA Health and Safety courses.
What does a health and safety qualification mean for healthcare workers?
For a typical healthcare professional, health and safety is an important consideration to make. Hazards can be present in any healthcare setting, and the risks can range from slips, trips and falls to more serious issues like electrical hazards, bloodborne pathogens and communicable diseases. Staying safe and avoiding health risks is not just about wearing a hard hat, steel-toe boots, face mask and medical gloves although these a necessary inputs.
There are many things to consider when it comes to health safety and particularly in the healthcare industry for purposes of this article. From how to avoid injury to how to respond if you or someone else gets hurt, or perhaps staying safe from risks of coronavirus infections and implementing policies and systems that are well relevant to a healthcare setting. Awareness really matters for the healthcare worker when issues of health and safety are involved.
When it comes to health and safety qualifications for healthcare workers, there are multiple options available. Some require a high school diploma or less while others require college degrees and professional certifications. Additionally a health worker may have to know which level of professional training is being sought. A basic, intermediate or an advanced health and safety qualification. The best health and safety qualifications for healthcare workers will much depend on the job requirements and specific position. To a large extent.
  What options are available?
First, carefully review this conversation that went on between Mike and his colleagues while they were talking about health and safety qualifications. Perhaps you will deduce a thing before the health and safety qualifications best for healthcare workers are further discussed. Mike and his friends are all healthcare workers.
 Conversation
I agree with Mike, but I'd add that not all qualifications are created equal. There are differences in the types of assessments, and the value of these assessments to employers, payers, and healthcare practitioners.
NEBOSH - I have not had any direct experience with this exam, but I understand that it is a very comprehensive examination, that covers most of the material that healthcare professionals need to know.  The cost is $550, and takes around 1.5 years to complete.
NVQ - The NQV is a British system.  It's much affordable and practical based. Usually there are NVQ’s for many specializations. There is one for health and safety and at different levels just like NEBOSH. The NEBOSH I believe covers same material, but with a shorter examination duration.
IOSH - I've taken this exam, and it is highly technical.  It covers all of the same content that is in NEBOSH. There are similar levels for IOSH. But I think that NVQ requires a lot of work. You end up learning so much. I will take that for my Advanced Level since it focuses on how to develop and implement health and safety policy, systems and procedures.
The best health and safety qualifications for healthcare workers!
NEBOSH Health and Safety for Healthcare Workers
International General Certificate (National or International)
Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (National or International)
These certifications contributes to the development of professional competence by enhancing learners' capacity to support organizations in making rational and proportionate decisions in order to manage risk, achieve corporate objectives, and comply with regulatory and other requirements.
NVQ Health and Safety for Healthcare Workers
The NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a Higher-Education Level qualification that is comparable to the NEBOSH general certificate. The NVQ course, which was developed with the help of SHEilds and IOSH, fulfills the demanding standards of occupational health and safety practice in “any industry”. Same applies with the NVQ Level 6 Health and Safety qualification which is equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and has many benefits like the NEBOSH
IOSH Health and Safety for Healthcare Workers
From a business context, the IOSH Level 3 Certificate in health and safety is a worldwide recognized qualification that demonstrates knowledge of safety and health in the workplace. And this includes the healthcare providers. You'll learn technical skills and information, as well as how to use that knowledge in the workplace. Your evaluations will be practical and based on real-life events that you may use in the job.
8 Factors to Consider to help make a good choice
A lot has been said already. To know which one to go for, you may want to take note of the following.
·         Career Goals
·         Current Position
·         Cost of tuition
·         Learning outcome of each program
·         Your work schedules and Nature of your work
·         The duration of each program
·         Availability of resources excluding tuition
·         Level of education
 Conclusion
A health and safety qualification for a healthcare worker is invaluable. It has always been the case and continues to be very vital. Currently, there is a high demand for health and safety qualified healthcare workers within the healthcare industry. Do not hesitate
