Aymeric's voice, calm and proper, stopped Lunive as she shadowed Estinien's step to the door leading out of the Lord Commander's Seat. Aymeric's expression was the essence of propriety befitting his station when addressing her, yet his sapphire eyes burned with an intensity that Lunive had slowly began to become familiar with.

The nephilim turned to look toward Estinien, who also paused in his swift exit after convincing both Aymeric and Alphinaud to remain in Ishgard. After a beat, glancing between both Lunive and Aymeric, the Azure Dragoon gave an understanding nod before turning away to leave the Seat. Lucia, who stood beside Aymeric, seemed to understand as well--she, too, went to leave the Seat to give the Lord Commander and the reputed Warrior of Light time alone.

Silence hung between them, thick as smoke, before it was broken by the swift movement of Aymeric emerging from behind the desk in but a few short steps. The material of his gloves brushed against Lunive's bare skin before his fingers--calloused, likely from mastering use of his weapon--circled her arm like a gentle manacle. Those sharp, azure eyes studied her and Lunive couldn't turn away even if she desired to. "Aymeric--"

"You do not need to put yourself in danger, mon ange." Aymeric's words stalled her own and Lunive's eyes widened slightly at the tenderness present in the Lord Commander's voice. "While it is admirable, your selflessness to Ishgard, I cannot bear it if you were harmed."

His words echoed in Lunive's mind much like a song that refused to leave her; yet she shook her head. "The people have thus called me a Warrior of Light," she murmured. "Do I not have a duty to Eorzea to protect its people and the nations yet residing here?"

Her question rang hollow, she knew. Lunive's goal was to tear the very heavens apart by enacting justice on what was done to her. The scars where her wings once were burned upon the delicate flesh she had taken. She would protect the people residing in Eorzea, yes, but she had never lost sight of her true objectives.

And Aymeric, he was no fool.

His hand found purchase against her cheek, the caress so gentle that it all but stopped the nephilim's breath. "Still you attempt to deflect from what truly is in your heart, Lunive," he replied, his tone gentle and yet carrying an unyielding firmness that all but could be melted by the myriad of intense emotions in his gaze. "You stay your course with conviction I can only admire and yet I can see just as well. You share the longing I feel."

Lunive inhaled sharply at that. His words cut through her as swiftly as a blade and yet she could find no words to deny it. How could she, when he spoke true? When she had grown even fonder of the Lord Commander for his leadership, his kindness, his passion.

She was no weaker than the mortals she had taken a mantle to protect after her Fall. Her heart was just as fallible, just as prone to carry the weight of these emotions that ached so within her chest. Her heart bore the same longing she beheld in his eyes and she was all too powerless to resist his embrace when his arms further wrapped around her, pulling her closer.

Aymeric knew, had known even without Lunive speaking the words. Keeping her within his embrace, his head bowed close to hers, the words leaving his lips within the privacy of his chambers. "Do not forget, mon ange, that you are not solitary on your path. No matter how far you go, how far you fly, you shall have me forevermore to wait upon your return...or to fight at your side."

Those words stopped her heart and Lunive felt her expression quiver for just a moment, her hand resting upon his armored chest. That same hand rose, touching his cheek. "How?" she whispered softly, her expression pained. "How is it that you manage to wound and heal me with one blow, Aymeric? What manner of enchantment is this?"

A faint sound left the Lord Commander then--laughter. "Lunive, if love is considered an enchantment, then we are both ensnared," he whispered back, his hand now rising to grasp at hers against his cheek. "And yet there is no one else I would sooner give my heart to than to you."

My conspiracy theory is that one of the reasons they fired Stephanie J. Block for the role of Elphaba in 2000 and replaced her with Idina Menzel at the end of the OBC workshops is because SJB played the role SO gay that it was quickly crossing the line of plausible deniability. Like she doesn't seem to be able to help herself.

And thank god she eventually got to play the role on Broadway (arguably one of the best - if not THE best - actresses who ever did), because we finally got to see her get super fucking handsy and stare lovingly into Glinda's eyes inches away from her face for three hours:

Plus I cannot emphasize enough just how effective and moving this particular version of For Good is. Straight up feels like wedding vows.
