Doctor Who Finale Spoilers and Overall Thoughts on S14/15

A lot of people are posting their reactions and thoughts to everything and I wanted to get mine out as well.

A) The 15th Doctor:

Ncuti was Brilliant and I do mean that in every way, but he just didn’t have enough time. The fact that we had him for less than two years is criminal. Truly the only thing I don’t think I really felt from him was a consistent feeling of him being older than he looks, especially in his second series. I loved his fashion and how open he was but he didn’t really feel thousands of years old to me other than some brief fleeting moments. I couldn’t say if this is more on the RTD end or the Disney end but I think they just had him playing the role a bit too young, especially when they’re still claiming he’s billions of years old.

Overall, both series were so intrinsically linked with their associated arc’s or the pantheon stuff that I don’t think he ever had time to truly fall into his role, which is such a shame.

I think they could’ve really helped his era out by giving him one or two more specials between seasons, even if it meant pushing the release of this season out a bit. I think having him have a low more stakes adventure with a returning new who villain like the slitheen/clockwork droids/or even Jack Robertson (sue me I think it’s funny that there’s now two Good Wife actors in Doctor Who) would’ve helped blend him in a bit better with the show without relying on the Daleks/Cybermen/The Master, and given him some more opportunities to show off the range of his Doctor.

B) Ruby:

I liked her a lot in 14, even if I do think her friendship with the doctor felt rushed, but I spent S15 feeling terrible for her. I truly thought Kate or Mel would’ve brought up the companion support group to her but they never did. Even with her coming back it felt like her story never truly got resolved, which is partially from the lackluster S14 finale but also, she should’ve had two seasons as a companion, her leaving at the end of 14 made no sense to me at the time and still doesn’t now.

People are also saying she stepped over Belinda to be the main girl for the finale but at least Belinda got to say goodbye, he takes off to bring back Poppy, and assuming him disappearing somewhat blurred for Ruby as it did for Belinda, he just disappeared with no explanation to her. Her last canon to this universe action was making her enemy happy and her friend just dissapears again after leaving her and her mom with a new baby. Her story ends with no resolution for everything she went through with no confirmation that she’ll return.

C) Belinda:

Belinda, as a young single mother character could’ve been Very interesting, especially as the rest of her own personal life faded out of focus after like two episodes. But thats not how they played it. By essentially having the Doctor retcon Poppy into her timeline with no previous discussions on how she feels about her future or potentially having kids shes lost any agency that previously defined her character.

Her accepting a magic baby with her best friend that arrived from a wish? Was played a bit strange, but then again, who’s going to wish ill will on an innocent toddler. She’s essentially a magic surrogate in this situation. I think considering we’ve had a somewhat similar episode in the Doctors Daughter her ambivalence seems weird and underwritten, but I can accept it being mellowed by the weirdness of the wish world.

But to overwrite her history to have had her actually Have Poppy with a character who we’ve never heard from before and acting like its secretly been her arc this whole time but we just didn’t know before now is almost bordering on Horror, and they completely glaze over it like it’s something that completes her story.

You can’t start the series with Belinda, who dumped her conservative boyfriend who wanted her to be a housewife, and got mad at the Doctor for ignoring her autonomy and scanning her DNA without permission, and end it with him completely changing her history and giving her a child from a different conservative fuckwits dreamworld and acting like its a satisfying end to her arc.

D) Arcs In General:

They were mostly unsatisfying or went to nowhere. Arcs like the Pantheon Gods and Susans Return should’ve been resolved, especially with them not even being sure when the shows coming back. I would’ve rather had some filler mixed in instead of big stories with no resolution. The Pantheon characters especially were placed so oddly in the seasons, and having other old who villains retconned into pantheon gods just feels like they’re trying too hard to make them fit.

They never rescued Rogue? I thought for sure when Anita first popped up in the finale i was like "omg maybe she can open a door into super hell and get him out" but Nope, not even mentioned again this episode.

The Rani reveal and pacing was good to me, I even enjoyed the different take on bigeneration between The Rani and Mrs Flood vs 14 and 15, but the fact that it just resolved with Omega eating The Rani and Mrs Flood noping out is??? I thought originally Mrs Flood would get taken out and we would at least we would get to see what happens to the original half of a bigeneration to confirm whether or not it actually loops back in the timeline or if it just fades out of existence but now she’s just…. running around still I guess? I don’t even get the point of having her bigenerate or regenerate if it wasn’t to wrap that up.

I am glad that they finally came up with HOW The Master wiped out the time lords back in series 12, but having it be the reason the remaining time lords are sterile is strange, especially when it’s already been established to be a thing for a long time in extended media. The fact it was brought up at all, especially monologued to the entirety of UNIT is fucking weird. These two series obsession with babies and children kind of icks me out.

Speaking of children, I don’t like the retcon that the Doctor officially never had kids. Regardless of how they came to be or when they ended up, New Who itself over the last 13 seasons always came back to the fact that the Doctor used to be a father and grandfather and those moments were often heartfelt and helped relate the Doctor back to some of the people he was helping. I don’t get what adding this to the canon did other than adding to the Susan Mystery that didn’t get resolved anyways.

E) Overall:

Both series layouts were kind of off, With both feeling too short and like the episodes were sometimes in the wrong order. The stakes were often inconsistent and the pantheon characters often felt like intrusions rather than part of the show, no matter how interesting they were.

I think I liked s14 better than s15, while I think the Doctor and Belinda had a more interesting set up, what made their dynamic interesting just faded into something that just felt like more of the same. While it definitely felt like the Doctor and Ruby’s friendship was a bit rushed, they also made it clear that there were time skips happening, which felt like they were leaving more opportunities for stories in the extended media rather than just exclusively feeling rushed. While I don’t like how Ruby’s story ended, I think she still had more to do in her episodes, and I still feel more at peace with her on an open end than Belinda with her retconned past.

While the more experimental episodes were great, the season finales for both seasons resolved very much like i felt the Chibnall eras did, with all the energy and passion in the wrong direction and striving more for changing the lore and using up the budget than something satisfying. I’ll still rewatch more episodes from these series than I will Chibnall’s, but I don’t know that I would bother with either finale again.

Least Favorites: Empire of Death, The Interstellar Song Contest, The Reality War

F) Finally, The Billie Reveal:

They gave her five seconds, a terrible wig, and no guarantee that she would actually ever get to return and I am angry on her behalf.

The fact that they’re blatantly using her to try and get the ratings they need to get another season approved without actually committing to making her The Doctor is Wild to me. She got two words in what sounded like a slightly different accent and a smile. She didn’t even get officially named as the Doctor in the credits, even 14 and the War Doctor got officially named in the credits.

It seems like they are fully willing to throw her under the bus if the show doesn’t get renewed and even if it does get another series they might not actually make her the doctor anyways. It does disservice to her And to Ncuti if it’s another fake-out regeneration, since he already got introduced with the bi-generation after the surprise return of Tennant. Either RTD needs to commit to actually making her the doctor or step down if he can’t keep the show going without needlessly generating commotion.

Regardless on how you feel about her returning to play the Doctor or not you have to acknowledge that they didn’t even give her a fair shot at winning anyone over.

Love your legend of zelda redesigns I was wondering about if you have any for Hyrule Warrirors Link and Zelda?

So yes and no. Im attaching my z-lda from my original set of redesigns cuz i Have redesigned her before, but round 2 i decided to add l-nkle and c-a/l-na which uh... Needless to say trying to balance all 4 of those characters designs was a little trickier than intended and i got a bit stumped and then work got in the way

Ive got 6 sets left altogether, including HW, also including Sp-rit Tracks, Z-ldas Adventure, Hyl-a and her Ch-sen Hero, Cad-nce of Hyr-le, and Age of Cal-mity

I Will get to them eventually but it will likely be a little while

-Characters like Terry, Carrie, and Helena really should just keep to the more offshoot universes. I still think its fun for them to crossover into mainline on occasion but they just dont make sense otherwise

-why does every batfam adaption merge the kids. Timmy Todd in btas, (i know they tried adding jason in later through the comics but im not buying it) Cass Brown in HQ:tBOP, Steph Drake in Gotham Knights. They made up an entirely new kid for Gotham Knights and then still merged Steph and Tim for??? Reasons

-why deage zatanna for young justice. I mean why deage characters in general but still. You dont understand if shes bruce age she should be a hot milf, why have we not agreed on this collectively.

-honestly why did young justice do a lot of things. Why merge the teen titans cast with them when the whole point was that they were different. Ive never been a big fan of it and i still dont get the hype

-I do have to say tho back as a kid my watching order was The Batman (04) and then Young Justice and my primary thought looking at the YJ joker after the TB one was "whos this british looking twink" but i digress

-I have two wolves in my head. One says that babs should be aged in between bruce and dick and the other one really likes The Batman (04). Both wolves agree its weird for her and bruce to hook up

-Speaking of babs, the back chip thing. I dislike what it stands for but should it not exist at all? At this point shes almost been magically un-paralyzed as long as she'd previously been in the wheelchair. Could potentially go the 'she got a little bit of feeling/mobility back and is now more of an ambulatory wheelchair user' route and give her some crutches as well as the cane and wheelchair, but idk.

- Extremely Controversial Opinion, I think Tim's "Drake" identity wouldve been a smash hit if theyd instead made him more of a P.I. character and ditched the ugly brown spandex. Regardless if its the correct move for his character is clear they dont know how to progress him at this point and it might get them from A -> B. (Also think its really funny to give him a columbo fedora but thats besides the point)

Thoughts on Ms Marvel?

I loved her original series, both with art style and the general vibes. I feel like its one of the few more modern characters that marvel actually did succesfully. The side characters i liked a lot and i still like evil bird thomas edison.

While i did keep up with some of her later runs i didnt really get into champions despite a read through, nor did i watch her mcu appearances. I was sorta turned off by them changing her origin and powers. The fact that they then changed them again But Differently in the comics after was just funny.

Your post-MM designs for Link, Malon and Zelda are all so amazing. I'm using your design for the two grown up Links as my phone background. They're just outstanding. You do their facial expressions so well! Honestly, these redesigns are all amazing. I want to live in this version of the Zeldaverse.

I honestly couldn't ever imagine doing an in depth merged verse, i think I'd go nuts i dont know how others do it.

In my head they would just function like barbies and kens, no nicknames, they just all know whos refering to who by tone.

Hey just wanted to say you were a big inspiration to me and my digital art- like when you were using autodesk it made me feel i was enough even without fancy programs like Photoshop and stuff and idk it was really cool to have an artist my age who seemed to do stuff I also like to do so thank you and I really like your art still

You can play a bit loose with step 1, especially in the context of royalty and magic elf twinks, but if you can't imagine that character Doing shit in that outfit then it aint a good outfit.
