Here is a place where on my journey to becoming a classics major I’ll be blogging about the lesser known details in Greek and Roman mythology. Or I’ll be complaining about the film Hercules. Being completely honest - I do believe these gods are real and that when they choose to speak with you and work with you it can be one crazy well worth it ride. (I won't name favorite deities because then I get so many dirty looks from all the others lol)

“I am the child of Hades. I go where I wish. The darkness is my birthright."
Macaria, the goddess of blessed death
Melinoe, the goddess of madness, nightmare and ghost
Zagreus, the God of Mysteries, Hunting and Rebirth. The first Dionysus.

re: the last two anons: However what texts you remain faithful to should always be up for debate. There were several earlier epics ( Alcmeonis (sp?) ) that listed Melinoe and Zagreus (at least) as Persephone and Hades' children. Western colonial historians practiced really lazy academia and had a tendency to turn all cultures barbaric in order to make theirs look better.
Oh certainly, I totally agreed.
Futhermore, in many translations of the story the father of the children is referred as “Chthonios Zeus”, meaning Hades. And since Hades, King of the Underworld and the Dead, was very much a Zeus like figure, it’s very likely that Hades was in fact the father. But of course, many people took Zeus literal (I was one of them, I won’t lie.)

So I finished my BA in Classical Language and Literature. And I can effectively say that it has lead me to know that the world we live in (particularly in the USA) is a product of the ripple effect. Namely I have noticed that the USA government was founded by classically educated men - mainly white men. These classically trained men would have studied Classics in a time when it was deeply effected by white supremacy.
There were many movements throughout history that idealized the culture and government of ancient Rome and ancient Greece. Notably is the gentlemen’s movement which stole statues from both cultures and also gave us the myths surrounding the “white” of ancient world. All of those statues and columns were highly decorated with paint. The Romans liked things to be colorful. Also there was an emperor of Rome - Septimius Severus who was born in Africa. The ancient world was not whitewashed.
Today the standard package of these ancient societies has delivered to us a perception that is esque and sometimes entirely far off from the truth.
Though admittedly we could never 100% put ourselves into the shoes of ancients. The white supremacy that has plagued the study has now altered pur perceptions of them. And also effectively contributed to the racism we see today.
** also notably the ancient Romans after defeating the Greeks stole many of their sculptures and works of art. Cicero writes in his letters to Atticus to bring him statues for his lawn while his is in Greece.
** for my Hellenistic polytheists please do lots of research and use your gut when dealing with Greek deities a lot of their stories have been plagued by Romanization, and even before that political agenda. Remember Ovid (also his Metamorphoses is highly political- and not meant to portray myth accurately) is fun but just because you read him doesnt mean you are done.

Masterpost of Resources for Hellenic Polytheism
I made a masterpost in April, and updated it again today… and then I realized it was in desperate need of organization. Instead of separating my resources from everyone else’s, because that honestly doesn’t do anything, this is a more organized version with mine mixed in, too. Let me know if you find any good resources you think I should add to this list!

Hey I saw your addition about how you've suffered under the "mathematical" approach to Latin so I can highly recommend lingua latina per se ilustrata by Hans Ørberg which is based on the method of natural approach or contextual induction! It's great even if your a post-beginner; I had a teacher who swore by the book and said he would always discover new aspects
That’s actually the exact book I picked up when I was getting back into Latin!! I highly recommend it also it’s a much more fun and natural approach to the language. Thank you for sharing, I hope anyone who is daunted by the language gives this book a try :)

Sometimes I’ll have uncontrollable thoughts about sexual situations and then I’ll think to myself “oh shit, what if the mindreader here sees this?” And then I try to force myself to think of something else
for me, those intrusive thoughts are the worst. i often feel EXACTLY what you said
