Question for the art people of Tumblr.

I am an artist who is trying to get a job in the animation industry (I have a BFA in Digital Art and Animation). My specialty is in concept art and background/environment art.

HOWEVER, the art i keep doing more often than not is character base. (If it weren't obvious by the kind of fan art I do). I need to do more background based stuff, but I'm rarely inspired to do those kinds of pieces.

To be clear, my specialty wasn't based on the fact that interest in character design is so popular. I do enjoy full illustrations and backgrounds, I just feel like there's this disconnect that keeps making me more interested in doing characters.

Part of this is probably due to the fact that I started (like many people) started learning digital art via characters. But is there another reason? What can I do to make backgrounds as fun as characters?

I actually try to make a habit out of playing every morning, even if it's just one song.
