I'm excited to announce that at the end of the month these three prints are going to go to a gallery! I asked on TikTok and Instagram which of my digital desert series people would like to see physical printed - and gosh was it tough! Almost every piece had at least one vote, but these three had the most. They're 11x14 printed on aluminum with a really nice foam hanger. They are so vivid and it's amazing to see something that I created on my iPad in physical form. I've been making more digital art the last few months - trying to get into my studio with a tiny human is a challenge. So, for right now I'm making art digitally. I'm looking forward to seeing the way that my art continues to change this year. As always, thanks for following me on this journey! #artprints #digitalart #artwork #animalart

This is the first painting that I made when I downloaded Procreate in June 2021 vs a painting I made yesterday. I was so disappointed with my avocado. It is a great reminder that everyone is a beginner at something new and to keep on keeping on while you’re learning 🥑

This piece was a little different. I felt like I was working from the negative space out instead of working my way in to the negative space. This was a practice in light.

The Texas Jackrabbit can be found in both the grasslands of the state and in the desert. They eat various kinds of vegetation like grass and cacti. This animal uses its long ears and big eyes to remain watchful of their surroundings. They are fast runners and will flash their tails (which have a bright white underside) to alert other jackrabbits to danger if they are nearby.

I’ve made 14 pieces of art so far for the month of November - that’s one of the best creative months I’ve had all year. All of the pieces are digital. That would have bothered me once, but I’m so in love with this little series and I’m so happy to be creating!

The armored armadillo is native to the Americas. They are an interesting animal and because of their low body temperature can carry leprosy - which at some point they picked up from Europeans coming to colonize the Americas. Armadillos have four identical offspring per litter. These animals are known for their ability to leap three to four feet in the air when startled. They have sharp claws which they use to forage for insects.
This colorful armadillo is part of my West Texas collection. I’m loving the pieces so far!

Roadrunners are part of the cuckoo bird family. They are known for their impressive ability to run - reaching speeds up to 15 mph. They are not known for flying and instead might glide or fly for short distances. These birds are omnivores and have even been known to eat snakes, small mammals, and plants. They are an ideal desert bird, absorbing water from their prey into their own digestive system. They are a social animal and will often approach humans with interest or curiosity (I saw some on my honeymoon). Roadrunners pick one mate per season - and might even mate for life. They will often raise their offspring together. I've been wanting to work on a roadrunner for quite some time and I really like the line work with this one! Beep! Beep!

The Javelina, or collared peccary, is a pig-like animal found in Texas. Although they may look like pigs, the Javelina is not a pig. Peccaries have small ears and hidden tails, three toes on their back feed, and they have straight tusks. Pigs were introduced to the Americas by Europeans, but peccaries are native animals. They live in family groups which often feature around a dozen individuals (but there have been herds as large as fifty found). They live in desert areas with mixed vegetation, surviving off of a mixture of prickly pear cactus, mesquite beans, and other plant matter (although they will eat small animals if they have the chance - like lizards). This colorful piece makes a wonderful addition to my bright West Texas series. I'm not sure how many more pieces I'll add. I was thinking about calling it at six, but I'm enjoying this series so much I'm thinking about making nine to twelve pieces of art.

The Texas Longhorn is a herd animal that can easily forage in areas with scarce vegetation. They can go for days without water, which made them ideal for the open ranges of Texas. In the 1920s they faced extinction, but the breed was saved by the U.S. government and several families: the Butlers, the Marks, the Peelers, the Phillips, the Hattons, the Barnes, the Wrights, and the Yates families. Occasionally this breed is mistaken for being Watusi. Also known as the American Longhorn, it became the Texas state large mammal in the 1990s. I love this colorful piece - based off of a picture I took earlier this year. They're such interesting animals!

The Mexican black bear is a medium sized bear. It has been recorded in several Mexican states as well as the Chisos Mountains in Texas (and beyond). These bears enjoy eating nuts, berries, prickly pear fruit, plant roots, as well as insects and small animals. One of the biggest threats to these animals is the loss of their habitat. They have also been victims of poaching and illegal trade. These bears have a protected status in Texas. That means that it is agains the law to harass or kill the animals. They're a magnificent species and should be protected.

The Chihuahuan raven lives primarily in the Southwestern United States and Mexico (although they can be found in the midwest too). They often build their nests in big trees, old buildings, and even telephone poles. They are part of the corvid family, which means that they are highly intelligent and also capable of mimicry. Some ravens have been taught to "talk" and can repeat back different phrases and even sing. I always look for these birds when we go to the Big Bend area. It's common to find them flying in pairs. They're so interesting!

Also called the "song dog," coyotes are known for their howls and yipping. They're half the size of wolves; about two feet high at he shoulder and they might weigh up to seventy pounds.
