Vera let out a ‘tut’ at Anna’s explanation regarding why there would be no immediate rescue attempt made for Bea and Lina.
“Yet we can send people into the Capitol city to snatch up the Prior girls to come here, eat our food, and offer little else,” she replied coolly. “You know as well as I do neither of them are safe. We’re lying to ourselves, all of us, every time we say that. Bea not only betrayed the North, but Vardon’s closest friend,” she rolled her eyes at the thought of anyone befriending that droll man, Victor Cradon. “Its more surprising that he didn’t immediately call for her death as soon as Lina cross the border back into the North.”
Perhaps she was still rattled from her most recent argument with Jack, but Anna’s answer simply wouldn’t do at that moment. “We claim to be so different from Vardon but, to me at least, we seem to be adopting the same war tactics… kidnapping poor innocent girls, treating our people as expendable,” she pushed the bowl away, standing up from the table.
“I believe I’ve lost my appetite.”
“It’s not that simple.”
She wanted to believe that the Hartwrights were safe in the capital, but she knew that Vera was right: their situation there was uncertain at best. The truth, as ugly as it was, was that the Hartwrights had been reduced to pawns in the war ... and neither of them held much value to the South anymore. Beatrice had been compromised and Lina, as Vardon’s expectant wife, would be dangerous to extract.
She exhaled, “They both knew what they were signing up for.” She said it as though it meant abandoning them to their fate was easy. It wasn’t. But Virginia wasn’t willing to sacrifice their chance of winning this war by putting their forces in more danger than was absolutely necessary. And neither, Anna realized, was she.
“The fact that he hasn’t killed her yet is a good sign,” Anna said, “If he wanted her dead, he could have done it already. We just have to be patient, Vera. We have the Priors and he has the Hartwrights ... I think, in time, Virginia would be willing to make a deal with him.”
She just hoped that it wouldn’t be too late.
The look on Vera’s face, however, confirmed to Anna that nothing she would say would ease her mind.
“We won’t agree on this,” Anna said, finally, “no matter how long we sit here.” They were both stubborn and they’d known each other long enough for Anna to know that they’d only talk each other in circles. “There’s something else we need to discuss ... “ Something much more urgent, Anna thought, but did not say.

upryavera:
“Well, be my guest. I think many people would thank you if you did,” Vera huffed, but she was calming down slightly. Nothing set her off as much as unkind words about the people she cared about. The situation with the Hartwrights and her unability to do anything about it lead to a particularly short fuse.
Vera simple nodded in response to Anna’s reply regarding the Prior sisters. She remembered them both, vaguely, from her youth. They’d been rather innocent things, always being watched by their father or brother or Vardon himself. She wondered to herself if their tactics were straying much too close to Vardon’s own, abducting the two girls who could offer them nothing except striking fear into their brother. "And do we think there is anything they’ll be able to offer us? Or are we simply giving them a holiday in the rustic south?” she inquired, taking the bowl of stew from Anna.
“I suppose the only good thing about Bea’s current… predicament… is that she no long has to live and pretend to be in love with that droll man,” Vera commented. Of course she wished the opposite. It would be much easier to whisk Bea back to the south that way, rather than trying to rescue her from a southern jail.
“Has Virginia made any mention of sending a party north to try and bring Bea and Lina home?”
“No, I doubt they do.” Anna said, crossing her arms, leaning up against the counter, “It’s what the brother knows that we are after. He wasn’t talking, but now he is.” The Prior girls had never been involved in much, politically. From what they’d learned from Beatrice, they seemed to be kept purposefully in the dark. Vardon considered them to be like family and he saw no need to worry them with serious matters.
It was still hard, even knowing all this, to look at them and really believe that they didn’t know what Vardon really was. They’d been living under his roof most of their lives: had they truly seen no sign of the things he was capable of when he did not get his way? It seemed more likely that they both had turned a blind eye to the things they did not like. They lived an easy life, being in Vardon’s inner circle, and all they had to do to keep it that way was to look the other way.
She was lighting a cigarette when Vera asked if there were any attempts being made to reclaim the Hartwrights. She’d been expecting the question. She knew Vera was anxious for them. Anna was, too. Beatrice was her friend, too, although you wouldn’t know it from the cool “no” she gave Vera in reply. She brought the cigarette to her lips, taking a moment to breath in and out, grateful for the time to consider her words.
“It’s too dangerous. The gain ... it isn’t worth the risk.” It felt crude, even to Anna’s ears, to discuss her friend’s situation as though it only mattered as to what could be lost or gained from her rescue. But it is how she had to think. It’s how they all had to think if they were going to see this through to the end.
“The situation isn’t ... ideal. For either Beatrice or her sister. But they aren’t in danger. They won’t lose their lives. We can afford to take our time.” We have to take our time. Next time there was a mission in the city, perhaps, she considered, hopefully. Although bringing them both back may draw all of Vardon’s armies upon them. They weren’t ready to hold them off. The only hope they’d have to survive would be to turn them back over to him.
And what would that accomplish?
“We will, as soon as we are able.” She promised. But when would that be? It wouldn’t be soon, she knew. Perhaps never, she thought, bitterly.

upryavera:
Vera had been brooding most of the trip that morning. Jack must have slept particularly well the night before, as he was all jokes as they’d had breakfast that morning. She’d mostly just rolled her eyes at most of his comments, until his rude joke about Beatrice Hartwright’s current predicament. That sent Vera into a bit of a rage and the first half of their travel that morning had been shouting at one another, the second half in a tense silence.
Jack had barely stopped the car before Vera had thrown open the door, grabbed her bag, and stormed off in whatever direction the most infuriating man in all of the south was not. She hardly even registered Anna until she was almost on top of the other woman.
“Only the constant trouble that Jack Lewis seems to bring,” Vera snapped, still on edge. She immediately softened her demeanor, knowing that it was unfair to speak to harshly to Anna, who had done absolutely nothing wrong. “I am sorry, that was rude of me,” she apologized, followed by a heavy sigh. “Some food sounds lovely,” she replied, following Anna up the pathway.
“The trip was fairly uneventful,” Vera informed Anna as they walked. The chill hadn’t subsided since she’d left nearly a week earlier, but it always seemed warmer the farther away from the northern border she found herself. “There doesn’t seem to be any advancement from Vardon’s armies currently, so I suppose the land they’ve claimed from us has pacified them for a time,” she paused, glancing sideways at Anna.
“Though the rumors in the foothills are that our forces have also managed to capture Howard Prior’s sisters,” she continued, shifting her bag from one hand to the other as they approached the door. “Which… if true… I suppose could be partially why his troops have stopped advancing…” Vera stopped outside the door, turning to Anna before entering.
“Are we planning to bring all of Vardon’s household to the south as our guests?” she inquired, already assuming the rumors were true.
Anna crossed her arms, warming herself against the cold wind that whipping through the yard. She shook her head in frustration at Vera’s outburst regarding Jack. She’d never been a fan of him, herself. His mannerisms were too similar to Nathaniel’s for her liking. But, unlike Nathaniel, he’d been given a position that suited his talents. Furthermore, sensitive information was kept from him, if it was possible for him to do his job without it. Nathaniel had done less, in her opinion, to earn it ... and he was senior in Virginia’s councils, second only to her.
“I’m surprised you haven’t strangled him. I would have,” She teased, a small smile playing on her lips. Although, in the mood she’d been in, just now, she wondered if she would have had the patience not to.
“The rumors are true,” She announced, as she busied herself with pouring some stew into a bowl for Vera, “We do have his sisters. He wasn’t cooperating and now he is.” She shrugged, as though it had been simple. “The information we’ve gathered from him has been invaluable.”
She wondered how much more he would tell them. She wasn’t sure what they would do once he had divulged all that he could. They could use him in a trade for Beatrice, perhaps, but allowing him to return to the North could prove dangerous. They’d been careful not to let him learn much of anything since he arrived, but they had been less careful with his sisters. She hoped giving them so much freedom hadn’t been a mistake.
Anna managed a smirk as she set the food down in front of Vera, “Not quite. He can have the miserable Victor Crandon all to himself,” She teased.

Betrayals (flashback) | Anna & Nathaniel
“It was him,” Anna said, “I know it was him.”
Virginia met her accusations against Nathaniel with a calm composure; she hardly even glanced up from what she was reading to respond. She exhaled before responding with the speech that she’d had ready the moment she’d heard about Beatrice’s exposure. Anna had never trusted Nathaniel, and Virginia doubted she ever would.
She relayed to Anna that there was no proof linking Nathaniel to any of it (plus, he’d known since the start of Beatrice’s involvement -- why should he wait so very long to do it?) And, furthermore, who was to say it was not something Beatrice, herself, had done? Vardon had been looking for a reason to get rid of her for years ... did any of them truly think that, with enough time, he would not find her out?
She had stormed out then: furious at Virginia for being so blind! (Ironically unaware that while Virginia was perhaps too prejudice towards Nathaniel in his favor, she was very much the same ... only to his disadvantage).
Anna went to find him. She knew he’d be leaving soon to return to the city, but she wouldn’t let him leave. Not before she had a chance to confront him, herself. She stood by the gate, arms crossed tightly over her chest as though it would help to contain her fury. If she let her arms drop to her side, she was certain that the next moment they’d be round his neck.
“I know it was you,” She said. Her voice was low and strangely calm, but her her eyes were like fire.

Homecoming | Anna & Vera
Sometimes there was a small voice inside Anna’s head that made her question if they were doing the right thing.
She had no qualms regarding Vardon himself: she’d seen what he could do and she’d watched him do it. She’d often thought that the world would be a better place if he had never been born. He’d saved it from the monsters, only to show everyone that he had the ability to be even worse than the undead.
But they were fighting fire with fire -- and she knew that innocents would get caught in the crossfires. She hated the Northerners, but she knew well enough that not all of them were bad. Not all of them had chosen to blindly follow their warlord.
Just as quickly as those thoughts had surfaced, she silenced them. The end, she thought, would justify the means. These were dark and unhappy times: but they were fighting for a better tomorrow. And what could a few lost innocent lives matter, when compared with a thousand ones that could be saved?
The remnants of an early morning snow crunched under her step as she went to meet Jack and Vera, who had newly returned from one of their missions. The first time the odd couple had gone out together, Anna had been sure that they would kill each other (if the enemy did not), but somehow they’d managed to survive it (and each other). Now, she couldn’t imagine one going out without the other.
As soon as they were safely through the wall, Anna noticed that Jack had gone his own way (no doubt to find some food, drink, and a warm place to sit). “Any trouble on the road?” She asked by way of greeting as she fell into step next to Vera. “There’s food ready, inside,” She added. If Jack had been a little more patient, she would have been able to tell him that, too. As it was, she was content to let him fend for himself.

ooc | Anna & Seb
So ... I feel like Anna has always liked Seb as a person, but now she certainly does not!!! trust him!!!! She definitely sees him as a bomb that’s going to go off (it is just a matter of when, not if). And like, I don’t think she knows what he’s going to do, but she is sure it is going to be rash and impulsive and probably set things back (and may or may not even be successful in getting lina back) and yeah, I feel like she feels like, for his safety and the safety of everyone else, he shouldn’t really play an active role right now. She, for sure, would freak out if she knew that he was making trips to the capital!!!
Anyway, I feel like they’ve probably gotten on in the past, but I can see where they would butt heads now??? Like Anna is Virginia’s right hand and she’s for sure not making rescuing Lina and Beatrice a priority right now and yeah

upryabeatrice:
BEA ABSOLUTELY ADORES ANNA LSAKDJFKLJDSLKFAJDSJF SO MUCH <3333333 Also, she def hopes she’s looking after Veronica rn and vice versa <3 esp now that Lina’s no longer in the south w her!! Tbh Anna and Vera and Lina are basically the only ppl she trusts w that <33333
Yasssss, I feel like it’s def been awhile since they were together, but I feel like they pr much got each other instantly and never looked back basically!! OMG and the letters are deF treasured!!!!!! Tho I agree that they’ve probs been sparse and usually were probs enclosed in her letters to Lina so Bea’d have an “excuse” to send a letter to the south hahaha bc obv she was only trying to persuade Lina to accept our lord and savior Xavier Vardon!!!!! ;DDDDD
Honestly, Bea agrees w her!!! She doesn’t expect any rescue attempt and would honestly think it incredibly ill advised! Honestly, she fully expected to die when she was first arrested and ended up getting saved by the bell via Lina selling herself to Xavier #funtimes Anyway, so every day is a gift and she doesn’t expect another miracle save. Honestly, even if they came, there’s more chance everyone would just die than actually managing to rescue her and Bea 100% accepts and gets that and has peace about the results of it. I mean, she deals w it like she deals w everything, by poking fun at it, but she’s ok w it and realistic about it. She also def hasn’t considered the Prior angle but, tbh, she also feels she’s outlived her usefulness to the resistance so she doesn’t think anyone’s coming to save her.
Anna 1000%%% looks out for Veronica!!! Or, you know, tries to ... I feel like Anna just yells alot when she thinks Veronica is doing something stupid (but she yells out of affection!!!!) and it probably results in veronica yelling back haha) but y’know, she tries. her parenting style can best be described as ~aggressive~ ;DDD
anyway, I agree that their communication would have been pretty rare and mostly it would probably come through Lina. I feel like Anna ~may~ have come to the capital city though, a few times, ~undercover~ years ago (probably before Vera was a thing??) ... Like I can see her personally gathering any sensitive information beatrice had gathered or something??? Especially since she never lived in the city, unlike most of the other southerners, so she wouldn’t be recognized as a traitor.
OH! So I was thinking, that perhaps leading up to the Prior parent assassinations, that Anna possibly worked as a ~servant~ in the Hartwright household and helped Beatrice pass information on to the resistance??? Like, since the info Beatrice was getting from her father was so invalible, it added another layer of protection for her to have someone else take the info and pass it on? Plus, I can see where Anna may have actually been the one who killed the Prior parents, and working as a servant in the capital helped her gain access???? idk???????
I do think that they probably disagree a lot (for instance, Anna would have def encouraged Lina marrying Vardon from the start b/c that connection would have to be even better than what Beatrice could get from her father!!) and I can see them not seeing to eye to eye on that, haha. But, yeah, I feel like they may have had their share of differences, but I don’t think they’d ever really let it get between them, b/c at the end of the day, they both want the same thing!!! (they just sometimes have different ideas about how to get it).

ooc | Anna & Vera
So Anna and Vera are best friends!!!!!!!
I actually feel like it probably wasn’t always that way though??? I mean, I do think that Anna respected Vera for leaving her ~comfortable life in the north for this one in the south b/c of her beliefs but i also think that anna probably misjudged her and thought that she wouldn’t last and was in over her head ...
like anna tries but she also isn’t the most patient person, and I think that she wouldn’t be super patient with someone like vera as she’s getting adjusted. and like they are both outspoken people and I feel like they probably often butted heads and anna was just waiting for the day when vera would turn around and leave. but that day never came and slowly she started to realize that vera was wayyy tougher than she seemed and that she was here for the long hall and she slowly realized that she actually liked vera a lot and that their friendship developed slowly???
I feel like she probably still gets ~frustrated~ with vera at times and definitely rolls her eyes (but it’s more affectionately now haha) and I’m sure that they still have their arguments, but I feel like they have way more good times now than bad. also, I feel like they are pretty unstoppable when they team up haha like imagine trying to win a argument against them? you can’t :)

ooc | Anna & Beatrice
ANNA!!! LOVES!!! BEATRICE SO MUCH!!!!!!
I feel like they haven’t spent a whole lot of time together, considering anna’s been mostly in the south and bea’s in the north, but I feel like they met when beatrice first came to the resistance and instantly!!!! connected!!!!!! and I feel like there has been some rare letters back and forth between them since, but even though they haven’t seen much of each other, anna still counts beatrice as one of her closest friends!!!
she absolutely hates that beatrice is in the situation she’s in now!!!! but anna is def one to focus on the big picture and she doesn’t think trying to get beatrice out is their biggest priority right now. to run a rescue mission would be extremely dangerous considering how well she is protected (plus they’d probably go in for lina, too, while they are at it and that’s probably even more difficult haha). that being said, i do think that they have considered trying to make the trade for the hartwrights for the priors, but not until they feel that they have gained everything there is to gain from howard -- and who knows how long that will take?
so yeah, anna doesn’t see herself reuniting with beatrice anytime soon in the future, but she also knows that beatrice is strong and that she can handle herself until help comes

ANNA LENIX - TAKEN BY LIZZY Age: 34 Portrayal: Melanie Laurent Alliance/Occupation: The South/Chief Advisor Relationships: Virginia Beauford, Vera Knight, Beatrice Crandon (best friends), Nathaniel Dawson (annoyance), Philip Clouser (cousin), Howard Prior (interest)
was orphaned when she was five years old and her parents were both devoured in front of her eyes
was a fun day!!!
would have died herself but virginia’s parents took her in!!!!
was FOREVER grateful for that
they already had several kids of their own and when she got older she realized just what a selfless thing it was for them to take in another mouth to feed/toddler to look out for
she and virginia were the same age and were pretty much inseparable from day #1
virginia only had brothers and so they both sort of became like sisters
anna was always desperate to prove her worth and constantly strove to improve her fighting and hunting and survival skills
and when the beaufords decided to take a stand against vardon, she was right there with them
when vardon killed her adoptive parents and brothers, leaving only virginia alive, anna was!!! enraged!!!!!!!
has had a boiling hatred for vardon and all who support him since then
determined!!!!! to help virginia take him down by any means necessary
can honestly pretty intense sometimes re: this and definitely reves virginia up more than calm her down which isn’t always the best thing
has ZERO filter and will tell you exactly what she is thinking
you never have to wonder with her where you stand tbh
can be super aggressive and serious
but also is wayyy softer when she’s with the people she loves!
really does love to laugh and smile and imagine better days but most of the time u see her, she has her revenge face on
HATES NATHANIEL DAWSON SO MUCH
does nOT trust him
is so afraid that virginia trusts him wayyyyy too much and that it will come back to hurt them all
the only reason she trusts him even a little is b/c sebastian gray does, and she knows sebastian is 1000% against the north
still, nathaniel has a LOT of say in what virginia does and anna thinks that he is privy to wayyy too much for a northern spy
also her dislike of him has def blinded her to a lot of his good ideas
is super stubborn and is convinced that he is worthless and that none of his input should be considered
has gotten really good at just ignoring him or, if she must notice his presence, give him a cold stare
does try to keep from arguing with him when they are discussing plans b/c she doesn’t want anything, including him, to get in the way of moving forward
so she tries to be civil in a professional setting but is also
has kind of developed feelings for howard prior???
not sure where THAT came from???
has never had romantic feelings for anyone before
also he’s literally the enemy and a northerner and their prisoner????????? but?????????????
oppresses the hell out of her feelings b/c she a) does not have time for that shit and b) HE’S LOYAL TO VARDON
has hope for the future but tends to be pretty cynical
especially when it comes to judging people
thinks that she’s super analytical and methodical but definitely lets her emotions get in the way a lot and can be emotional and rash when people who are really close to her are involved
willing to make the hard choices for the greater good
