clytemnaestra was the daughter of tyndareus and leda, sister of helen of sparta, and queen to agamemnon of argos. at the onset of the trojan war agamemnon sacrificed their daughter, iphigenia, for good winds and fortune after angering the goddess artemis. clytemnaestra’s grief bore rage, and the long years of her husband’s absence honed that rage into vengeance. with her lover, aegisthus, she plotted her husband’s death. according to aeschylus, when agamemnon returns after long battle and difficult voyage with the enslaved cassandra, clytemnaestra waits for her husband to enter the bath before ensnaring him in a cloth net and stabbing him to death.
