A Fool’s Guide to the Occult, A Fool’s Look At The Planes of Correspondence

There are several dimensions to this universe. In physics what we know to be dimensions are directions you can go. You can see this with your own eyes that we live in a 3 dimensional universe affected by other dimensions such as time, gravity ect. Dimensional physics gets very complicated and save for being a highly intelligent mathematician, kinda impossible to understand on an advanced level on your own. The Science behind it is fun though and it shares a lot of things in common with hermetic philosophy mostly because it evolved from Hermetic Philosophy along with most fields of study. Again this tells you how strong of a philosophy the Kybalion and the hermetic philosophy is. Here we will be talking about a similar concept in the hermetic philosophy called The Law of Correspondence and its planes of existence.        

“As Above, So Below,” is a common phrase in the occult and makes up one of the core concepts of hermetic philosophy. What this means, As Above So Below, As Within so Without, is that what happens on a microscopic level also seems to happen on the macrolevel and vice versa. So what happens to the individual. You have seen the examples I talked about in previous Fool’s guides how brain neurons look a lot like galaxy clusters. How the Universe is mental because that is the highest plane of existence humans can perceive. Those are examples of as above so below. The higher reflects the lower and the lower reflects the nature of the higher. The Universe may be divided into three classes of phenomena;

The Great Spiritual Plan

The Planes Shade into each other similar to how the dimensions in Physics are all connected as directions of energy and force. There is no true division. All is connected in THE ALL, connected by different phenomena. Planes in this context means a state or condition. So in physics we have the 4th dimension  which is classically known as Time. It is more complicated than just time and I’m not an expert. It is also what helped Einstein form his famous e=mc2, law of relativity. Everything is connected with the Vibrations of time in the form of energy. Everything is energy from the smallest particle to the totality of the universe. All is energy. Each of these three great planes of energy are divided by sub-planes.

The Seven Physical Planes

Plane of Matter (A) (Solid, Liquids,Gas)

Plane of Matter (B) (Radiant Matter)

Plane of Matter (C)   (Subtle Teneous Matter)

Plane of Ethereal Substance (Connects matter and energy which creates the ether, its has extreme tenuity and elasticity)

Plane of Energy (A) (Energy known to physics)

Plane Of Energy (B) (Nature’s finer forces manifestations of certain forms of mental phenomena)

Plane of Energy (C) (Highly organized that it seems like life, the “Divine Power”)

The Mental Planes, organize themselves in levels of awareness. The levels of awareness from mineral to Human mind. Keep in mind these concepts were first thought up back in the times of Ancient Egypt but it still stands the test of time. For this mental exercise think of the term mental as how things take action. Minerals grow, crystals have a uniformed way of growing itself. This can be thought of as a mental force, same thing with how chemicals bond and plants photosynthesize and animals hunt. The Mental plane is the plane of process.

Seven Mental Planes

Plane of Mineral Mind (Souls of lower degree, “living energy”)

Plane of Elemental Mind (A) ( Interactions and intelligence between mineral and chemical) Viruses/cells

Plane of Plant Mind (entities of lower simple life plants & fungi)

Plane of Elemental Mind (B) (between plant and animal Bacteria, starfish, ect.)

Plane of Animal Mind

Plane of Elemental Mind (C) (Semi-human)

Plane of Human Mind (We have seven sub-divisions of the human mind, we have only made it to 5.)

Spiritual Plane

Since we haven't achieved understanding all seven planes on the Human mental plane we are unable to understand and perceive the Spiritual Planes. We know that there has to be seven sub planes and one Great Spiritual plane. Because hermits love the number seven and so to it seems the universe. This is the plane all spiritual beings reside, gods, angles and other sacred beings. The Spirit is, “The Animating Principle.”

A Fool’s Deeper Look Into The Mental Universe

        When you look at a heat map of the visible universe the first thing you may notice is the galaxies seem to form a web of light. This giant web of light looks almost like the web of neurons that we have in our human brain. Scientists at NASA have even observed radio waves coming from stars. So this web of starry neurons also seem to produce their own form of brainwaves.

This is my own interpretation of course but it leads back to the same hermetic saying, “As Above So Below.” Brainwaves are created when our neurons produce electrical impulses in order to communicate with each other. Could it be possible that star systems produce radio waves in order to communicate with each other? This could be a hint at the universe's sentence whether it is a conscious sentience of an unconscious sentience, that is where my level of understanding is still lacking. This is just my simple observation.

The human mind is defined as a group of cognitive functions that connect you to the human individual or the I AM. So like all the consciousness, imagination, perception, thinking, intelligence, judgement, language, memory, emotion and instinct. Even though the endocrine system also plays a large role in a few of these as well, so your mind is your entire being while you are alive with a body that is a biological thinking hormone factory made for feeling and thinking about feeling and observing the world around you, but why? That is the one million dollar question with multiple answers and the reason why you are here. What if I told you that if  there were no observer the universe it wouldn't exist? It would be stuck in limbo. If light wasn’t observed it be stuck in a limbo between particle and wave and that's it. The Double Slit Experiment is proof that without an observer light would exist fixed in two states, light and particle. It is not until we observe the light it turns into either a wave or particle depending on how we observe it. So the Mind is needed to observe the Physical plane in order for the Physical plane to exist, so it is safe to assume the Spiritual plane of THE ALL is needed for the Mental Plane to exist.  

The ALL is spirit. There are three planes of existence: the Physical, the Mental and the Spiritual. The ALL is in all three Great planes of existence. These planes have sub-planes and are all connected but it is important to understand that humans are limited in their development in sensing anything above the Mental Plane. That is why sensing anything spiritual will, for us, come through the Mental Plane. Carl Jung explains the human mind as being a complex combination of archetypes that make up the ego of each individual. These archetypes manifest themselves in art and literature and can even combine to manifest collective archetypes that make up god heads or local deities. This leads us back to the idea of Brahman or THE ALL being the total sum of all these archetypes. This is why the Source is often referred to as the God with 10,000 faces. That being said since the mind is also a combination of anima and animus, THE ALL is also above gender and is both “The Father and Mother Mind.” “Within the Father-Mother mind all mortal children are home, There is not one who is Fatherless, nor Motherless in the Universe.”

“The Infinite Mind of THE ALL is the womb of the Universe…. THE ALL creates in its Infinite Mind countless Universes, which exist for Eons of Time - and Yet, to THE ALL, the creation, development decline and death of a million universes is like the twinkling of an eye”

So why should it matter to us the behavior of THE ALL when all we are meant to do is observe as much of it as possible? We aren't merely meant to observe we must also observe and find as much truth as we can. Which is the point of individualization. When your mind is free from outside influences you are free to see the truth as the all intended you to see it. You add your own individual nature to THE ALL, this way. We are meant to connect with THE ALL.  When you are able to find the truth within you, your “Inner Peace.” Only through “Inner Peace” will you be able to connect with THE ALL.  The Matrix of Four: The Philosophy of Duality, by Ethen Indigo Smith explained this really well;

“Peace is attained by steady, aligned balance. The intersection of individual and mass consciousness forms a cross, representative of the duality of polarity and comes together in one single point. The World, mass consciousness, other people might sway us, but not the more centered and balanced individuals. More grounded individuals are less likely to become upset by the swaying of mass consciousness. Normally those who are unaware of the four aspects of love are the ones who seek to disturb others, while the ones who seek to sway others towards balance. Individual balance is based on being near the center point of the intersection regardless of how one is pushed and pulled or otherwise sidetracked by outside mass consciousness. Individual balance is illustrated through the capability of maintaining alignment, maintaining the ability to be compassionate for instance, no matter how the external world, society or mass consciousness seeks to drag us down or move us.”

What is mass consciousness? Also known as the Collective Consciousness. According to Carl Jung, the Collective Consciousness,  is made up of a collection of knowledge and imagery that every person is born with and is shared by all human beings due to ancestral experience. The goal in order to become one with this without becoming controlled by it is to break away from it. Find your inner self and come back centered and balanced. Buddhists call this path the Middle Way. It is the path of non-extremism. To keep a centered and balanced life is the closest you will get to becoming one with THE ALL  or the Universe. To be one with THE ALL. Ethen goes on to say;

Balance and compassion and understanding love lead to empowered individual consciousness and eventual stronger interaction with mass consciousness. You can’t do this through lying to the Mass Consciousness because the Mass Consciousness will since it and THE ALL will not will it. The all acts collectively. Held with fear the Collective consciousness cannot act properly. Only swayed by the ego of those in charge, not by the Source.

A Fool’s Glance at Mentalism and THE ALL

Mentalism and THE ALL

The Masters tell us, “Under and in-back of, the universe of time, space and change, is ever to be found the Substantial Reality – The Fundamental Truth.” The Secrets of the Universe are hidden in plain sight. The more you learn about Hermetic Philosophy, the more you will begin to see them. Before I go deeper into the concepts behind Hermetic philosophy, we must first talk about the core of this Philosophy. This is the Fools Guide to the Occult: A Fool’s Glance at Mentalism and its relation to THE ALL.

The mind is a very complicated topic. So complicated that it has an entire field of study dedicated to it called Psychology. So for the sake of time and simplification I will only touch on it. There are several different ideas of how the mind works. The Hindus and the Buddhists have GREAT sophisticated practices that delve into the mental plane. What I will be focusing on is the western idea of the mental plane and then go into the Dharma and mentalism in later. What I am going to focus on is the Mind, Mental Transmutation and THE ALL.

“Mind ( as well as metals and elements) may be transmuted, from state to state; degree to degree; condition to condition; pole to pole; vibration to vibration; True Hermetic Transmutation is a Mental Art!” - The Kybalion

So There Are Three States of Mind;

The Reasonable Mind- a person uses Their reasonable mind when approaching a situation intellectually. They plan and make decisions based on what they see as true.

The Emotional Mind- is when a person uses how they feel to control a person's thoughts and behavior. They might act impulsively with little regard for the consequences.

The Wise Mind- is able to balance the two understanding when it is the right time to be Reasonable and when it is the right time to be Emotional.

Hermeticists were the original Alchemists, Astrologers, and Psychologists. Hermes having been the founder of these schools of thought. The Wise mind is the alchemical marriage of the Emotional and Reasonable mind. Old hermetic traditions hold the test of time. Alchemy continues through Chemistry. Astrology is now Astronomy. These schools of thought stood the tests of time because their truths can survive change. The ancients were not dumb, in fact they were a lot smarter than we are today and a lot less distracted. The ancient hermeticists possessed both the Inner and Outer knowledge and therefore more aware of the world around them.

The Zodiac was a farmers almanac it told our ancestors when to farm crops raise animals and even plan harvests and holidays. The sky was a clock, a calendar, and a compass. There are stone chains in Buddhist temples in India that no one knows how to replicate even with modern tools.

Transmutation, means to change from one nature, form, or substance into another.

Mental Transmutation, is the art of changing and transforming mental states, forms, and conditions, into others. So like, turning the Emotional or Rational mind to a Wise mind.

Mental Transmutation, is really the “magic” of which the ancient writers had so much to say in their works, but gave so few practical instructions. And boy howdy! Are there so many works to choose from I suggest starting at the Kalama Sutta, The Emerald Tablets, and Psychology of the Unconscious  by Carl Jung. Mental transmutation takes years to master and is a journey in and of itself so don't think you can flip a switch and say you got it because you don't. Masters do not make public exhibitions of their powers, but seek seclusion from the crowds of men in order to better work their way along the path. You need to find yourself how you are in-regards to everyone else. That way you know how you better fit in with others and society as a whole. You will also be resistant to the wills of others. This is why nerds spend their time buried in books instead of going out and being social. Masters tend to be introverted and drawn into their own minds but that is not limited to just introverts its just that extroverts tend to have lower intuition due to being too attached to group think. There are always exceptions to every rule however rare it may be.

Substance - A term meaning that which underlies all outward manifestations; the essence; the essential reality; the thing in itself. Substantial. A term meaning actually existing; being real. Reality; The state of being real; true; valid; fixed; permanent; actual.

Substantia - actually existing being the essential element; Being real.

Reality -  the state of being real; true, enduring; valid; fixed; permanent; actual

The Law is the Truth. If we are,  just for the fun of it, take the Law of Thelma into consideration. The Law is Will over Love. Will over Love equals Truth. Love is the Highest state of Mind and since Truth is Love, Truth is the highest state of reality. With this in mind we can begin to explore the concept of THE ALL.

C.S Lewis wrote a book on Four types of Love the from the Bible;

Affection (storage)

Love of a parent towards offspring and vice versa one of the strongest forms of love. You need nothing for this kind of love. It is a type of unconditional love.

Friendship (philia)

Friendship is based on a kinship one has with another that is due to people having in common like games or other hobbies or lifestyle choices. “To the Ancients, Friendship seemed the happiest and most fully human of all loves,” says Lewis, “the crown of life and the school of virtue. The modern world, in comparison, ignores it.” as Lewis says, “few value it because few experience it,... Friendship must be about something.”

Romantic (eros)  

The most intimate  kind of love. “(Lovers) are always talking to one another about their love” and “are normally face to face, absorbed in each other,” says Lewis. This love is all about the passion one has for an individual. “The event of falling in love is of such a nature that we are right to reject as intolerable the idea that it should be transitory,” says Lewis. “In one high bound it has overlapped the massive wall of our selfhood; it has made appetite itself altruistic, tossed personal happiness aside as a triviality and planted the interests of another in the center of our being. ”This is key to a happy family and when approached with humility and understanding of the loved one will lead to a healthy marriage."

Charity (agape)

Love without limitation or the love of THE ALL or the Ultimate Truth Lewis reminds us:

“There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket—safe, dark, motionless, airless—it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to tragedy, or at least to the risk of tragedy, is damnation. The only place outside Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell.”

In Buddhism they also have four aspects of love;

Maitri - is translated into kindness or benevolence.

Karuna - meaning compassion If you can't feel compassion for another you can't feel love for another.

Mudita- translated as joy or happiness. Negative emotions prevent love from taking place. When you love another you feel happy to be around them and they share that same happiness.

Upeksha - meaning freedom. Without freedom to love or not to love you arn't truly feeling love. You don't own the person you love. Genuine love comes on its own without orders and so it can also leave on its own. Love is not true love when its forced.

I talk about Truth, Love and Will because, THE ALL is Mind- The universe itself is mental, existing in the Mind of THE ALL. THE ALL also is the spiritual plan but, due to our inability to since the spiritual we can only understand The mental form of THE ALL.

THE ALL Must be ALL that really is. There is nothing more because THE ALL is literally everything. THE ALL is Infinite, there is nothing left to define, confine, bound, limit or restrict THE ALL. THE ALL is Infinite in Time and Eternal as well as unchanging. The Hindu traditions call THE ALL the Brahman, who is all deities and phenomena all wrapped up in one Whole, the Ultimate Truth, or sum of all truths. Even that definition hardly scratches the surface of what THE ALL, Brahman, or Source is. THE ALL is undefinable by our level of human understanding. This is how I came to a better understanding of THE ALL. But in trying to understand THE ALL it is important not to fully define THE ALL. This warning is better explained in the Christion Gnostic view of Sophia, who tried to comprehend the Source only to emanate a shadow of what the Mind is capable of providing, The Demiurge. All our truths are but half truths so any truth you find that is true for you may not be true for others but with the two truths a more perfect truth may emerge.

The Masters tell us that “While all is in THE ALL, it is equally true THE ALL is in all. To him who understands this truth hath come great knowledge.” THE ALL is imminent in the Universe, and every part, particle, unit, or combination within the Universe, just as you are a part of every tissue, cell, particle of your body. However, the Universe is a creation of the Infinite Mind of  THE ALL. The difference between the two poles separates them, “As Above So Below!” Our Hermetic teachings concerning the Process of Mental Creation of the Universe are that, at the beginning of the Creative Cycle, THE ALL in its aspect of, “Becoming,” and the process of Creation begins.

THE ALL interacts with its Creation through its “Stage of Involution”. In the Stage of Involution, THE ALL becomes “Involved” or “Wrapped Up” in its creation. Corresponding to the Mental Process of an artist, writer, architect and so on. It is through the Law of Individualization, that by separating into separate Units of Force, so finally that which left, THE ALL as individualized energy returns to its source as countless highly developed Units of Life, having risen higher and higher in the scale by means of Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Evolution. THE ALL does this all through meditation. THE ALL, heaving meditated upon the beginning of the Creation. Having thus established the material foundations of the universe, having thought it into existence. Then gradually THE ALL, “Awakens” from its meditation and in so doing, starts into manifestation and then the “Indrawing” process. To me this reminds me of breathing deeply. All then Withdraws into THE ALL when the Great Work is finished. As Above So Below the “Indwelling Spirit” is the “Divine Ego.”

THE ALL, “Acts because it Acts,”. There is no reason for THE ALL to act, for a “Reason” implies a “Cause” and THE ALL is above the Law of Cause and Effect. Principle and THE ALL; Principle and Being; are Identical, they are one and the same. When the Masters asked Hermes The Great about Inner Nature and THE ALL, Hermes pressed his lips together and stayed silent.

A Fool's Glance at Hermetic Knowledge

When you hear the term Occult, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Men with long beards in long black robes? Weird goth kids claiming to be Satan? Most people only see the Occult as a wired cult with rituals and demons. However this is a gross misunderstanding of the Occult and its practice. It hardly scratches the surface   Occult Knowledge, is. The term Occult comes from the Latin root words, “Cleare” to hide; “Occulere'' to conceal; “Occultare'' secret. Occult literally means hidden knowledge. It's hidden because for the longest time throughout history it was illegal to practice anything outside of the State mandated religion even when the Occult Knowledge itself predates the State religion by thousands of years. It is also hidden by the willfully ignorant. Some people are just lacking the inner insight of this philosophy to gain anything from it. So its meaning is hidden from them by their own ignorance. Just like some people are stronger than others some people are just wiser than others.

Before we go into the Philosophy we have to first talk about, the Master of Masters in Hermetic Knowledge, it would be a disservice if we didn't talk about the man, the myth, the legend Hermes Tristmegistus, also known as the “Thrice-greatest Hermes”. Hermes being the messenger of the gods and the God of hidden knowledge. He is a combination of the Egyptian God Thoth and the Greek God Hermes. The hermetic tradition goes all the way back to Ancient Egypt and Greece, thus why Hermetic philosophy is centered around Hermes Tristmegistus, God of Wisdom. The Emerald Tablets is the collection of the Wisdom of the Thrice Great Hermes, the Center of This Hermitic Tradition the Kybalion subscribes to.

Hermetic Rules of Thumb:

Keep This Stuff Secret –

Some people still see these ideas as threatening to them in some way. Be it a religious conflict or a misunderstanding of the topic. It’s important you keep this information to yourself while you are learning about it. We like to think that the world today is open and free to believe whatever we want to believe, but the world is always changing. Keep your work to yourself not just for your safety but also so your truths and experiences remain your own. Untainted by others opinions. It is also very important that you come to an understanding of this material according to your own fruition. The way you see things, live your life and experience life is unique and should stay unique while you develop yourself and the understanding of this world. I like to think God; The ALL; or whatever the “Source” is. It prefers us to come to an understanding of it on our own in our own way. So during the development stage keep your work a secret.

Don't Throw Pearls at Swine –

If you know someone that won't understand anything about Hermetic Philosophy save yourself some time and headache and keep it to yourself. Chances are that even if they do find it interesting they will more than likely misinterpret the meaning behind words and miss the message behind them. Keep your Pearls for others with pearls.

Milk Before Babes, Meat for the Strong –

As someone just starting to look into Hermetic Philosophy it wouldn't do you well to slap you with advanced occult stuff. That would be like giving you a lesson in quantum physics to a five year old. Not because the kid is dumb but because the kid has not formed a basic understand of key concepts and principles to formulate an advanced understanding of what quantum physics is. Once the kid learns the basic concepts of physics he can later tackle the more advanced knowledge on the topic.

Don't Crystallize This Into a Creed –

Wisdom degenerates when you do this. All truths are half truths and everyone will discover something slightly different during their journey. This is your personal journey.  A key part of the Kybalion is The Law. The Law is the Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect in its aspect of the Law of Attraction, Vibration and Polarity. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Nothing escapes this Law. However, reality is constantly changing and so some laws may also need to change with what is current. Political law is not always factual law thus the problem with censorship. The tides of change may end up covering the truth but there will always be ways to hide the truth in plane sight.  You don't always want a stone foundation when a more flexible foundation is way more stable and will last much longer. It is also important that we all find our own truths and not impose on other truths but try to find the whole truth through the combinations of other truths.

Share when the Opportunity Allows-

This breaks all the previous rules, rules are made to be broken if we never broke any of the rules we wouldn't get anywhere as a species, new things would never be discovered and the world would be boring. Just be smart with who you share it with. Some will not understand you and others will downright refuse to understand you, don't need to create drama for yourself with people who can't handle your truth. Remember also that your truth Is still a half truth and always listen and learn from the truths of others. This is exactly what I am doing right now! Break the rules!

There are Seven Main Principles that make up the Hermetic Philosophy.

Mentalism – You will hear this from me constantly, the Universe is Mental the more you  understand this the better you will understand this philosophy as a whole.   

Correspondence – As Above So Below is something else you will hear constantly. Its is good for understanding paradoxes and hidden secrets of nature     

Vibration – Everything is in motion all the time, even when its seems to be at rest the atoms  that make up the material are still in motion.     

Polarity – Everything is Dual as a result all truths are half truths that make up the whole  truth of the Law. All opposites are identical in nature but different in degree. As a result of this Principle things like Good and Evil; Light and Dark; Hot and Cold are two poles of the same thing.  

Rhythm – Think of a  pendulum and its swing, everything has a rhythm, everything flows in and out, everything has its tides, everything rises and falls.  

Cause and Effect –  everything happens according to Law. There is no such thing as  chance, chances is just an unrecognized Law. Nothing escapes this Law.  People who understand this plays the Game and ceases to be an NPC.    

Gender – Gender is everything and the Law of Gender is set between a Masculine and Feminine principle. There is mental gender and there is physical gender. There is no exception to this rule in the Hermetic Philosophy. Every Male form has hidden female elements and every Female form has hidden masculine elements.  

This Philosophy is a Precursor to Science

These laws are present in everything. The most notable and concrete is that of Newton and his Laws of Physics. Newton's third law is: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The statement means that in every interaction, there is a pair of forces acting on the two interacting objects. This goes right along with the principles of Cause and Effect and Polarity.

Polarity is very well known in both Physics and Chemistry especially when in electromagnetism. It is present in the study of magnets where they label the two sides of a magnet; the North pole and South pole. You also see it in batteries labeled with positive (+) and negative (-) poles. Very familiar because you see them in almost every electronic device that needs a battery.  

Rhythm and vibration is also a physical science. The study of vibration is called Cymatics and it is used in the healthcare field, art and music and engineering and electronics. It is the one principle you see, feel and hear. You can’t see without light and the way it vibrates into your eyes. You can hear sound because of your ears and you can feel the same vibrations with your hands on a speaker.  

Gender is present in biology and psychology. It is studied in biology through genetic makeup of an organism. In psychology both the masculine and the feminine are present in the psyche through the Anima/Animus or in the Brahman the Shiva/Shakti.

Hermetic philosophy, is not a religion it is a very basic understanding of how our reality works. You can use this in any aspect of your life from your job to your hobbies to how you raise a family. Its principals are present in every field of study from physical sciences, political sciences, engineering, even literature and art. Understanding the hermetic principles opens up windows of deeper understanding that will make your path in life easier to follow. That is why I personally think about them whenever I encounter a problem.
