VIII. Strength

This card also didn’t change much but I wanted Usopp in a bit more active pose. So now he is looking down at his plant-creation. As someone who is scared of everything as well, Usopp is one of the bravest character to me and I couldn’t think of any better character for the Strength card.

The King and the GOAT
"Hey Oda, I wrote you but you still not calling..."
Artist: @patrochilles-or-bust (me!)
Countdown to the Melanin Beam Challenge, piece #2! When I say this edit took me a grand total of 15 minutes (and 7 of that was me trying to figure out where I hid my own layers) 😐 There is zero excuse at this point. Toei Animation, when you get this message, you raggedy BIT-
(also, I barely go here, this was for Mr. CBC, but yall can pry the Pirate Rap from my cold, dead hands. This is such a whimsical opening, yall playing if you don't like it. 😤🤌🏾🔥)

Holding a dumbbell firmly above his head, Zoro distractedly watches Usopp. The sniper, sitting nearby, quietly tinkers with a gadget. The swordsman knows, even before the signs appear, that something is amiss. Indeed: as suddenly as the weather changes at sea, Usopp's mood falters. His hands begin to shake, his breathing becomes ragged, his head sinks into his shoulders… The dumbbell is immediately placed back on its rack, and Zoro silently kneels down in front of his friend. "Hey," he simply says, before spreading his arms. Usopp stares at him, tears in his eyes. It only takes him a second to pack up his things and throw himself against Zoro, clinging to him as if his life depended on it. In response, the swordsman closes his arms around the sniper’s quivering figure. Silent sobs soon shake Usopp from head to toe, while Zoro plays with his hair. He says nothing, because there's nothing to say. It happens sometimes, just like that, without warning. Everything is okay, Usopp laughs and smiles. Then, suddenly, he breaks down. Chopper calls it "sensory overload" and unfortunately hasn't found a cure yet. The only solution Zoro knows for now is to hold Usopp until the crisis passes. So that's what he does. With his face buried in the sniper's red bandana, he waits. And waits. Until his friend feels better.

So like, on one hand, I know Usopp can be proud. He boasts all the time, takes credit for things he didn’t do, and vehemently rejects pity even when he knows he needs help. But on the other hand, I’ve never been able to see pride as a major character flaw of his. And that’s primarily because of everything that happens in his introduction arc.
In Syrup Village, Usopp puts aside his pride, dignity, safety, hurt feelings, and more because protecting the village is more important. He’d rather let people — not just the villagers, but the kids who look up to him and a girl he cares about a lot — think him a bad person than put them in danger or ruin their peace of mind. He even turns down the chance to clear his name and be called a hero (the original “nothing happened” of One Piece, suck it Zoro). In that same arc, we’re also shown that his lies are not just silly boasts, but dreams he wants to make real. All these moments, and similar moments in later arcs, are why I’ve never seen pride as a major character flaw for Usopp.
